My favorite scene in the book was completely voided by this movie. It was the scene when Saphira was a few months old and Eragon was trying to name her, he tried all the names he heard from his stories from Brom but none worked because they were all boy names. Eragon finally got it that she was a girl and suggested her names be Saphira, the small dragon squeaking contently. I loved that adorable scene and they just voided it.

In the book, when the scene where the uncle dies, Eragon was actually in the house when Dirza's minions came in search of the dragon. Sapphira could sense their coming and came and took Eragon on her back and flew him far away, leaving only the uncle there who perished when the house came down. This was the first time Eragon rode her, and he did so without a saddle. Her scales sliced through his thighs and left him incredibly injured and he had to spend time healing at his cousin Roran's fiance's, giving him time to mourn his uncle and also allowed him to experience a bitterness toward Sapphira that they had to work over, believing that if he had been there when the henchmen attacked, he could have saved his uncle. After that, Eragon was too afraid to attempt to ride the dragon, even after Brom secured for him a saddle and that's why in the movie, they spend a lot of time on horseback instead of riding the dragon. But the movie just cut out all of that and instead, they ride horses just to ride horses and excuse it away by something like "Eragon was afraid of heights" or some crap

I hate this movie for what it did to Saphira. She wasn't just some soft-spoken parrot, she was BRUTAL. She was prideful, blunt, hot-headed, and took no shit-which is why she was one of my favorite characters. It's one of the reasons I was glad she could talk in the book, because whenever she spoke, she had something to actually _say_ . She said her opinion and she spared no feelings. Plus: in the books, if the riders die, the dragons live on. The reason why that's interesting is-Saphira had repeatedly threatened to _murder_ those who endangered Eragon. Not because their lives were linked, but because she loved him. They might as well have animated her in 2D to match the personality they gave her for the film.

Except Saphira is nothing more than a vain, oversized cat and is largely uninteresting because she usually serves as a mere side-kick for the whiny, sociopathic Eragon. Hell, the whopping few chapters we have of Saphira's perspective mainly has her hanging around, being bored, and missing Eragon. We also learn that she uses hyphens for no reason. So does she call the sun "Great-round-light-in-the-sky" as if she were some native tribesman? Her ego is massive for a character who accomplishes so little compared to most other characters, like Roran or even Nausada, despite being a walking 2000+ pound of muscle with wings. You might say something like "Oh yeah! She destroyed 12 soldiers like they were nothing!!!" First off, this is not a noticeable deed at all. If you were to put yourself in Saphira's biology, you would understand that as a huge creature, you should have no issue with accomplishing this whatsoever. It's like an ant being amazed that a human can carry such a huge orange, easily 20X their body size. Saphira's ego reminds me of a rich kid that inherited their parents wealth. And did Saphira always have something to actually say? Most of the time, she says something wise because Paolini told us she did, he tells us but doesn't show us. When Saphira does actually try to say something "wise," it's pseudo-psychology at best, like the millions of times she tries to tell Eragon not to feel guilty about those he kills, or trying to whisk away very real human emotions of guilt and regret that Eragon may logically feel. So no, I think the movie made the best of what they could work with regarding Saphira. In the books, she absolutely was a soft-spoken parrot most of the time. Most of her time is spent making threats, instead of acting upon them. Another example, near the beginning of the 4th book, Eragon is beaten in a spar around 4 times by some elf I can't remember. She then asks Eragon if she could knock the elf over for him. First off, "knocking over" doesn't sound very brutal, and second off, if she really was the blunt, hot-head that you and Paolini says she is, she would not only knock-over this elf, but send him flying or brutally eat/murder him in some way WITHOUT Eragon's permission, right before turning around and bluntly telling Eragon that he has a long way to go if he wants to survive against any meaningful opponent. As she says many times in the story, she is not beholden to anyone, so they could not consider her a traitor. Sometime in the third book, Nausada acknowledges Saphira could eat her if she desires. I can't think of a single person that was murdered by Saphira that wasn't some generic enemy soldier or one of the main "bad guys" (Wait, did she even kill a named antagonist?) So no, to me, she's just a boring character that has accomplished boring deeds. One last thing about their "relationship," since you've mentioned it. The fact that their friendship is the result of a spell can be viewed as deteriorating from their friendship, and some readers interpret this as that Eragon and Saphira are forced to love one another because they were so closely linked by magic before they even began looking out for one another. /end rant
@RenegadeShepTheSpacer
@RenegadeShepTheSpacer 7 жыл бұрын
Wolfun1t You've missed the point entirely as you're using human logic to try and explain the emotions of a non-human creature, one who is prideful simply because it is a genetic trait of her entire species. And just like that, much of your rant is obsolete.

You know why I loved the first book so much back when I first read it? In the book, Saphira was NOT some celestial being suddenly growing up with a growl of thunder and suddenly having ALL the information, even though you have no idea where she got all of it. In the movie, as soon as she's grown, she acts like she's been alive for decades and has stories to tell Eragon. In the books, she IS a new born. She behaves like it, and though she ages quite fast at first, it's still that kinda growth spurt which still seemed natural. She had to LEARN new information and about the situation at hand TOGETHER with Eragon; they were on the same level, and they were not only connected through the mind link but also because of what they went through together, learning the same stuff together with no one being advantaged. When Eragon was told that if his dragon would die, he'd suffer unimaginable pain, it was instantly believable and the bare thought of Saphira dying on Eragon seemed devastating because of the bond they developed as equal friends on their journey. The movies completely ruined their relationship and I will never forgive it for that.

Turning a doorstopper of a book into a movie rarely works out for this very reason, you have to condense hundreds of pages of prologue into the first 10-15 minutes of a movie so you can get to the action because they assume the fans already know what's going on and they assume non fans are too dumb to sit through tons of character development without walking out of the theater. Eragon, as a movie, made me sad. I watched it, thought "okay, fantasy with dragon riders, I can read that". Halfway through the first book (about the time Brom dies), I stopped and thought "Wtf did the movie guys smoke?" While the book series doesn't have any groundbreaking innovation, it is very well written, and you can tell the author put a lot of effort into it. Eragon's relationship with Saphira, their interactions with other characters, and the depiction of the elven and dwarven civilizations later on, they're all interesting and compelling. The lexicons he created, while by no means comparable to, say, Tolkien's (honestly, whose is?), are well defined and depicted, especially the elvish one. At some point, the author tells the story from Saphira's point of view, and you can tell she perceives the world in a very different way. It's a stroke of genius, that sadly doesn't happen enough in the series. My honest recommendation, if you enjoy classical high fantasy, is to give the books a chance. Don't be dissuaded by this half-baked adaptation. Also, try grabbing the PC tie-in. It's surprisingly enjoyable, for a 2006 game.

+Adrijana I read the book ages ago, but I can remember that the setting and actual information of the height of the mountains and stuff wasn't actually known too well (Other than "it is big"). You never know how big something is until you see it, and they lived in a medieval age where at most the map shows that it is a mountain region and that's all. Pretty sure you cannot expect the characters to see something amazing that they never imagined and NOT be surprised by it. Hell even if you KNEW how high those mountains are, that doesn't mean you cannot be awed by their sight in real life.. You are finding strange things to be pissed off about.

Nope. The coolest part of the book is when they're travelling over the plains and gale force winds almost break the dragon's wings even though she's walking. That was actually a really awesome few pages that showed the bond between the main characters as well as the vulnerability that comes with youth, even in an animal like a dragon. Shame it was a fluke and Paolini just went back to copying _New Hope_ afterwards.

+CJCroen1393 That was pretty good. And of course, if people want Sapphira to talk, that's fine, but don't have her repeat what any other character could just explain. Or have her spout dialogue in every single scene. Have her say things that add more to her character, or that give her more chemistry with Eragon. Pretty much, just have Sapphira talk when it's the right time.

17:40 It's interesting that that's exactly what How to Train Your Dragon does. The dragons don't speak with the humans, but you can still get a sense of a connection between them. They do it with through their actions or their body language in response to something. imo, I don't think HTTYD would have been as well received as it was if they let the dragons speak. Ironically, despite HTTYD being a CGI cartoon, the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless feels far more authentic, than what we see in this movie.
@pigifi
@pigifi 7 жыл бұрын
This was essentially what the Eragon movie flopped at. It ended up turning the relationship between what was meant to be between 2 EQUAL best friends into a unintentional failed attempt at a Master/Pet relationship by making Saphira state the obvious, effectively dehumanizing her as an individual and simply demoting her whole character into "Eragon's Dragon" like some glorified steed (former which was most likely Paolini's intention when he wrote the telepathy at first and then derailing into the latter). On the other hand, HTTYD establishes that the Dragons in question have their own ego, personality and character, so i'm playing the devil's advocate (and stating the original books), that there is a language of the Dragons. Although while definitely showing a strong connection via body language and response is a good case of "Show, Don't Tell" , there have been many situations where body language often got misinterpreted and lands both the Vikings and Humans into deep trouble simply because they can't talk to their human partners about the important stuff. Not to mention by not giving them a voice, the relationship is demoted/changed from "2 best friends" to "Master and Pet" which is something I doubt Christina Powell had in mind when she was writing the books. As much as I agree with Doug here about the whole "not stating the obvious" when it comes to Saphira, when it comes to the main characters animal companions, if the companions aren't mere pets but individuals like her that have the opportunity to be complex and 3-dimensional, then it's a waste if the chance for them to grow alongside their human friends aren't used at all, effectively sidelining them as "mere pets".

Yeah, I hated the ending. I STILL can't get over Arya becoming queen. It's absurd. She never wanted to be queen, in fact she joined the Varden to get away from all that. She always wanted to be a Rider, and Riders have pretty much always stayed out of that sort of thing. And the book is trying to tell me that after she FINALLY becomes a Rider, THEN she would decide to become queen? WHY? Because some elves were kind of persistent? It was completely against her character. We didn't know much about Arya, in fact, practically the only thing we DID know about her was that she was very independent. And the only reason for her to be queen seemed to be to make it so that she and Eragon couldn't be together. What with the bullshit of Eragon leaving "forever", even though he's immortal. Which led to the big cop-out of Eragon's vision about that boat scene coming true, but then WHOOSH there goes Arya. Utter garbage.

No its not, it has similar elements and names, but the pacing, personalities and details are all wrong. Take roran and eragon play fighting, they never did that in the books because neither wanted to be a fighter, they didn't desire to go out into the battlefield. Eragon enjoyed the stories brom told him (who was a storyteller, not a merchant) but that was it, he didn't dream of using a sword until he was thrust into fighting and had no choice. They also skipped many things and showed things like galbatorix, who was kept a mystery until the final book.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. When I first watched it, I was 11 and thought it was awesome. When I discovered that it was a book series, I was so happy. I’ve read all of the books but after reading the books, I watched the movie again and was horrified at how they butcher what was then my favourite book series. As an adult, I’m not as fond of the books but that’s because my taste in reading material has changed and I can appreciate more complex stories like the Lord of the Rings. Eragon is a good epic fantasy for young readers just getting into the genre because it has everything you want in a fantasy but isn’t as overly complicated or difficult to read. What I’m trying to say is, as much as the movie sucked, it got me started on a decade long love affair with reading and appreciation for longer, more detailed plots. Sorry for the long comment. This is something I am rather passionate about 😋

This comment decently sums up why I liked the series and why I respect it to this day. Yes, it basically rips the Hero's Journey formula beat for beat (a formula that is no more unique to Eragon than it is to Star Wars, might I add) but it is a very good entry point into both reading as a hobby itself or just the fantasy genre. It's not the next Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Star Wars (by this I mean it never tried to be "the next big book saga") and that's fine.

*Baby dragon suddenly changes into an adult dragon* Me: *inhale* $&@# YOU!!!!!!! Look, I'm a big fan of the books. I love them to death, and I'm not going to act like they're ground breaking or anything like that. They DO repeat a LOT of things that other stories do. Uncle murdered forcing the hero to go on a journey: Star Wars written all over it. Wise old mentor: pftt, that's a given. Saving the damsel in distress: Duh. If movie producers want to make a generic cash grab, FINE I don't care! Just don't expect me to spend money to watch it. I rather read the books again. BUT (and this is a big "but") if you're going to make a movie about a relationship between a boy and a dragon, put a bit more EFFORT INTO IT INSTEAD OF SKIPPING OVER ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE BOOK!!! For those who don't know: in the book, Eragon does take dragon out in to the woods to hide her. She makes a nest in a old hollow tree and Eragon brings her food every days. Months go by and Eragon wants to give her a name. He goes to Brom (the storyteller) and asks him the names of the dragons. Eragon comes back to the dragon and he starts listing off all the male names (he doesn't know she's a girl). After her getting annoyed and Eragon's realization he gives a list of female name when she hears the name Saphira and picks that name. Years go by with Eragon learning more about Saphira and Saphira learning how to fly and communicate with Eragon. Eragon makes a saddle, gets injured while riding her, and teaches her how to hunt. Saphira asks Eragon questions about why she's being hidden, what he does when he's gone, and why the villagers would be afraid of her. She shows him the joy of flying and how to communicate through thought. THEY BOND!!!! They learn about each other and teach each other! I realize it's hard to translate a book to film BUT THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS ADD A FRIGGIN MONTAGE OR TIME SKIP!!!!!

I like the books but I won’t deny the quality is lacking. (It is better than a few other fantasy novels though namely the infamously bad Eyes of Argon and the Sword of Truth series) but yeah I agree. And near the end she even says “I love you little one” and it’s a cute moment

SaladCollective the book had way more world building, the cousin played a sort of larger role later on and a significantly large role im the later books. Gobbledy goop was a much more fleshed out and threatening villain as we see his oppresion and iron fist grasping the world. Also what is more terrifying than the laughing dead. Oh yeah and durza and the shades were more fleshed out, as was the sorcery, elves and dwarves. Basically it was a fairly well made series and pretty damn good, the ra'zak or whatever they are are more like the nazgul tho with a similar kind of "black breath" kind of abillity.

They changed so much in the movie. The amount of emphasis and development that the books put into the magic system just wasn't translated at all. I get why but it was such an important part of many battles and events that not to address it just takes something major away from the whole story. Magic is complicated. The movie just wasn't as good, even the opening sequence seeing dragons fire-breathing others out the sky just didn't make sense. In the book's fire rarely does any damage to other dragons because of the number of wards put up by the riders, but the point is the same. On top of that, the "land was ruled by men astride mighty dragons" was just wrong. The dragon riders were peace-keepers not rulers, the land had a king while they were around. Just......so much was't adapted well.

The worst thing about this movie is that it only vaguely follows the book. But is so far from it that they can't do the second film. Characters were killed who need to be in the second. Others not even introduced. Elves and dwarves are essential to the story, the urgals aren't human, the fortune teller, Angela, whose not mentioned in this video, is not blind, can kick ads with a double bladed sword and has a werecat that is quite essential to the story. Also, Galbatorix is only talked about and is a commanding presence, but does not ever reveal bus face till the forth instalment, making John Malkovitch not really even needed in this film.

TK Darkheart I didn't really mind the feathers too much as the Eragon book covers I've seen had feathery scales. And it seems like they tried to make the dragon's design standout. That's my opinion about it, anyway.

Jason Early I can see where you come. from my standpoint, while I understand that it's fantasy and almost anything is possible, I also like fantasy that maintains some ground in science. the feathers on something that is 99% scale seemed odd and extremely out of place because feathers are like normal hairs, the move in a certain way, scales wouldn't really allow for feathers and it put me off. doesn't mean I hate it, just means I didn't like it.

TK Darkheart but feathers evolved from scale.... dinosaurs into birds... feathers make more sense then wing membranes honestly. Though it is a bit weird the feathers would only be on the wings
@tkdarkheart
@tkdarkheart 7 жыл бұрын
The Red Salamander that's exactly it. I know dinosaur evolved into birds, but at the same time, dinosaurs that had feathers had them on more than just the wings, like you said. they had them on their backs, tails, legs, forearms and so on. but to see them in such a singular place seemed awkward. like they ripped the wings off a Griffin and taped them to her back. it just didn't work, no body would've grown the wings in just that spot, they would've been in different areas as well.

- MrVercettti89 If anyone cares... SPOILERS BELOW. As an avid Percy Jackson fan, the first movie was INCREDIBLE as an adaptation compared to the second one. The first movie had a lot of small issues that ruin the first book, but can be solved easily later in the series. The biggest issues for me were the cabin(Percy's dad didn't build him shit), the fact that Chiron knows who Percy's dad is when it is supposed to be a mystery, the part where Clarisse is supposed to show up at the beginning(because it's just hilarious), and the age of the characters. They were supposed to be twelve, but that can be solved later on by just making adaptations so the plot fits their age. Other than that it was small details. The second movie, however, started out great. They introduced Clarisse in an interesting way, the quest started out just like I remembered it, and the rest was pretty well done. Certain liberties were taken, for instance, I don't remember the "eaten by a worm" part of the book, but it's been a while and honestly I thought it worked really well either way. I was a little sad we didn't get to see Circe, but oh well they gave her a nod at the island. Then the heroes get the fleece and are about to head back for the stunning cliff hanger... And then EVERYTHING WENT TO SHIT. LUKES ASS SHOWS UP WITH KRONOS-IN-A-BOX, BRINGS HIM BACK TO LIFE, AND STARTS EATING THE DEMIGODS. WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT DID YOU PLAN ON DOING FOR THE NEXT THREE FUCKING BOOKS? KRONOS DOESN'T COME BACK UNTIL BOOK 5. AND I KNOW YOU PLANNED ON CONTINUING IT BECAUSE YOU STILL BROUGHT THALIA BACK. SO WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!?!?!?!?!?. And just to be clear, I do mean "you" as in the writers and directors, not "you" the commentator.

@@martinbixler5155 The Dom has a lost in adaptation on the two movies. I hated both the movies as they pretty much do what he says in his opening line "if you want to tell the author's story tell the author's story, don't take the author's story and try and change it into your story." The plot is unrecognizable, the villains are completely wrong, the characters are completely warped... Nothing in any of the movies resembles the book save for the basic set up of Demigods and Quests. I highly recommend watching the Lost in Adaptation of it if you haven't already

+DarkCeleste11 Out of sheer coincidence, those happened to be suggested today when I opened up youtube and I actually watched both of them. I agree with a lot of the points and I honestly believe my recollection of the books is likely a incorrect since I read them nearly a decade ago. I haven't gone back to read them again mainly because I wanted to catch up with the series. I only finished the Percy Jackson series just before the release of the beginning of the Heroes of Olympus arc and I only recently finished all of those as well as the first two Trials of Apollo books. Plus I have so many books I want to read for the first time, I haven't been able to go back and revisit the original story line. The more commentary I see on the movies, the more I think the details from the movie are mixing into my recollection of the books and making the movies seem more accurate than they actually are. I am now in the process of using my Audible credits to download the audio books so I can listen to them in my free time so I can hate the movies even more than I already do. The point my comment was making is that the second movie seemed salvageable to me until the very end. There are certainly issues and I think that the Lost in Adaptation was correct on every criticism levied against the movies, but I was just saying I thought it could be salvaged until Kronos came back and started eating the demigods. Maybe that is just me wanting to see a good film adaptation of one of my favorite book series ever, and giving them too much credit. But it was just my opinion.

Dude the books were pretty decent, they even had this magic system where an ancient language was used to describe what you want happen and it took the same amount of energy to do as it would take you physically. Pretty cool. By the end of the second book Eragon is dropping whole platoons by popping veins in their brains from the air.

Sorry about my English I like it. But it's hard to call fantasy, It's more like science fiction. Dragons there were genetically engineered from the lizards, and the inhabitants were descendants of the colonists from the Earth, but the inhabitants have lost the knowledge of their ancestors and are at the stage of the Middle Ages. There are rumors about the film adaptation. There is a game of 2001 "Dragon Riders: Chronicles of Pern"
