For all the things wrong with this movie, there's one tiny, subtle thing that they do absolutely right. It's actually so subtle that I'm not altogether positive it wasn't accidental. So, in the vicinity of the Maw, they just *happen* to run into an Imperial Star Destroyer. Seems pretty overkill for a band of smugglers, right? Or just another random stupid chance? Well... no. EU fans know that the Maw (a series of black holes surrounding a small area of virtually inaccessible stable space in the middle) is actually a top secret Imperial research facility where they developed the weaponry for the Death Star, among other things. That ISD isn't there for them, or by random chance. It's there to protect the Empire's most classified facility. So... yeah. Han almost accidentally wandered into the most heavily defended and classified facility in the Empire.

When I was a kid, I read a trilogy of Han Solo novels. They were all written before The Empire Strikes Back came out. There was so little back story, they just wrote a series of adventures starring Han and Chewie (and a broken down droid with a super computer in it chest cavity). They even placed it within a fiefdom within the Empired called The Corporate Sector so they didn't have to try and shoehorn in Tarkin or Vader. I saw each Star Wars movie in theaters when they came out, numerous times on cable and home video. I never even noticed there were dice hanging in the Millenium Falcon, let alone wondered about their "origin". It's this Hollywood idea that everything needs to be significant rather than something someone happens to like.

I think I read those too. Wasn't Han supposed to have been a an officer in the Imperial Army, which explained the stripe on his pants during the original film trilogy? thats the wrong han solo trilogy, you have to read the ones that came out later they were "The Paradise Snare" which is the events from his escape from the con artist geris shrike who kept a ship of orphan kids he used in cons that they would fly all over the correlian systems 5 different inhabited planets and a mysterious space station, and why he understands wookie, and how the wookie that took care of him on the ship died trying to protect him when he finally escaped, but it ends with him joining the navy. Book 2 "The Hutt Gambit" starts with him in a bar after he's been kicked out after acquiring rank, because of stopping a higher ranking officer from abusing a wookie slave who escaped because of his intervention because of the wookie who had raised him. So at this point he's pretty lost. He had worked his whole life towards entering the navy, he's been drummed out, and in fron of all his former friends and piers, he's been stripped of all his medals and his uniform torn, and spit on his shoes, except for the corellian blood stripes which were awarded to him for saving a bunch of people from his own system because of where he was from and they didnt come from the empire. So sitting at the bar 2 months after he's been kicked out, you meet chewbacca the first time, and han tells him to piss off after he recognizes him, and chew bacca kind of goes away but then saves han after a card game gone wrong, and he informs han that he owes him a life debt, And this book is the start of their smuggling career, and how he got into it, meeting lando when lando saves him from boba fet the first time he took a bounty on han, and in return han teaching him how to fly his new ship the millennium falcon, that book ends with him winning it from lando. Book 3 Rebel Dawn, leads back to the characters in the first book who you get glimpses of during the second book coming full circle back to han, so he ends up going on a plot from a rebel group led by his old girl friend who he saved from book 1 of left him right before he joined the academy asks him for help in running a raid on the spice lords who he had saved her from year before. Agreeing to split the cut with him and any of his smuggler friends he could convince to help in the raid. But she and her group double cross him and take all the spoils to fund their raid on the information planet that held the plans for the death star (rogue one ripped it off) This is what set the rift between solo and lando, as all his smuggler friends felt he was responsible for the loss of life and the double cross. That book ends with him escaping the through the kessel run After he's been sold out by the spice mine administrator to the local imperial garrison after picking up jabba's order thats been smuggled to him by the same corrupt administrator. So he dumps the load with a tracker after he see's he's cut off on the other side by another star destroyer. Later he goes back to retrieve it and cant find the cargo, so he goes to jabba to explain what happened to ask for time to pay him back, and on his way back to the ship he see chewbacca talking to an old man in a brown robe. Its an amazing story, you have to read it, dont bother with the audio book, its abridged, and cuts out half of the story

BravoChief, how Maz got Luke's/Anakin's old lightsaber was never important and shouldn't be explained. If it gets explained, it will be disappointing. "That's a story for another time" is code for "it's not important enough to tell in the movie." Imagine if in the middle of The Force Awakens, if the story had ground to a halt so Maz could tell how she used to be a lawyer, and one day a new client came to her. He used to be a maintenance worker in Cloud City. One day, he got hit really hard on the head by this weird cylindrical object and a HUMAN HAND! Not only had that impact resulted in a concussion and constant headaches, but in examining the object, he accidently turned it on and killed his space dog, resulting in significant mental trauma and anguish. Unfortunately, with the Bespin Mining Bureau dissolved in the Empire's takeover, he was also unable to make any claims of disability or sue for negligence. Maz assured him that there's always someone to sue, and held onto the evidence. Numerous attempts to sue Darth Vader in the Imperial Court System were tied up and delayed. The Empire was in desperate need of tort reform at the time of its collapse. Unfortunately, her client died of Space AIDS before she was able to successfully carry out a lawsuit, and she hung onto the lightsaber. Now you know why it was a story for another time. Also, how as that for the worst Star Wars fan fiction ever?

As for the fact that he survived is a bit of a can of worms but we dont see him hit the ground so the severity of the fall is unknown, getting cut in half is at least equal to getting two legs and an arm cut off and left at the edge of a lava river and catching on fire and whilst its not canon anymore there are way way more bodily harm survivable by dark side users in legends.

It's actually not nearly as impossible as they make it sound. The odds aren't simply two random people happening to come across each other in the entirety of space. Crimson Dawn is one of the biggest criminal cartels in the galaxy, & they knew it was likely they'd be sold to them if they were caught in their escape, so first off, it's already basically a 50/50 chance that she'd end up with either Crimson Dawn or the Hutts, after which, she's clearly smart enough to work her way up the ranks. Then, again factoring in that Crimson Dawn is a massive criminal empire, it's a pretty safe bet that Han would run across them basically immediately after dipping his toe in the waters of the underworld, so really the only part with pretty slim odds (which can be forgiven since most movies rely on some amount of coincidence) is that Han's first smuggling job would be with a crew that was already working for the higher ups at Crimson Dawn.

Can anyone help me clear this up? I have a big admiration for Star Wars in general (ever since I was little), and after I first watched this movie with my friends, and we had seen the supposed "Darth Maul" cameo, we were a little confused why he was in it at all. We first talked about that the Han Solo movie timeline comes in between episodes 3 and 4, then were talking about the fact that Obi Wan lightsabered Darth Maul in half in episode 1 (So we assumed he was very dead, of course). After that was mentioned, we then started thinking the "Darth Maul" that was shown in the Han Solo movie, was just another dark Jedi from Darth Mauls race. (I guess to throw off the audience?) I'm not entirely sure. If anyone has any extra information, it'd be much appreciated.

8:55 Couldn't agree more. This isn't just a problem with the most recent films but it goes back to Episodes 1 through 3. A successful franchise is going to get exploited for anything that a studio thinks it can use to draw audiences. It sucks, but it makes (some kind of) sense from a business perspective so I see why they do it. But in Star Wars it's so much worse. It's like they want to capitalize on any throwaway reference or accident from the original series just to remind people they're watching a Star Wars film. "Hey look, see this character? You're watching a Stars Wars movie! Hey, get that reference? You're a super fan! Make sure you see the next one!" It's really cynical, but it's the studios exploiting the fans. You know what was great about the originals? People didn't love them because they were new Star Wars movies. People loved them because they were good. 1998: what was the clone wars? I don't know, but sounded mysterious and cool as hell. 2018: what was the clone wars? Um, I think you mean '"Attack of the Clones", and it's movie filled with shitty CGI and clunky dialogue about democracy. Can't we leave something to the imagination? I just can't understand the logic of including Maul in this movie. He was revived in the Clone Wars, and permanently killed in Rebels. So the vast majority of the movie goers who haven't watched these shows are left wondering how he's still around when the last time they saw he had just gotten bisected by Obi-Wan and fell down a bottomless pit. And it's not like Maul's arc could go anywhere if this movie got a sequel, since he dies in Rebels. Was Disney just planning to have Maul disappear from the future movies with no confrontation or climax?
@18947ful6 жыл бұрын
it's just desparation at this point. Disney knows which characters are most beloved by fans of the former EU canon, that's why they got timothy zahn to write a new Thrawn series, in order to fish money from the people who loved thrawn and were furious that Disney retconned him. Same with Darth Maul. People loved him and Disney realized they might get some fans from the EU back and thus increase sales. But I think it's backfiring hard on them, the Thrawn Books weren't near what the old Trilogy had in store for that character and shoving in Maul like that didnt help either. In the end Disney doesn't get that most people from that fan group loved those characters because of how they were weaved into the overall canon, not just because of their names and looks.

As a show-watcher, I quite liked the Maul cameo. He was faithful to the characterization that Clone Wars and Rebels have provided him, to the extent that his presence in this film enriches Rebels, a smidge -- 'cause he shows up there without any explanation of what he's been doing since the Clone Wars, but here we have a sensible answer. He's been doing exactly what he did during the war, but adapted to a totalitarian galaxy. He's amassing power, and I can easily imagine that he used his criminal connections to discover the Sith secrets that led him to that temple where he shows up in Rebels.

@Makutakanuva6 жыл бұрын
@@onnixcarmichele3911 I'd be down for that. I'm also of a mind that they could use Maul as the Nick Fury of several otherwise-unrelated anthology films, creating an Avengers-type team-up film for these characters who are all imperiled by some big play Maul's gonna make. It would be a way to give Maul the screentime he deserves without him overstaying his welcome. And also, from a production standpoint, it can't be easy to have a voice actor dub over a live actor's performance in a convincing, natural way, and having a whole movie dedicated to Ray Park voiced by Sam Witwer would probably be quite a challenge.

This movie is basically a testimony of what Hollywood misunderstood about the original trilogy. First, Han solo was a beloved character not because Han was a such a great character, but because Harrison ford made/ played him this way and gave it personality. It's a sequel no one asked for and the "exposition" is unnecessary. Han solo didn't really need a motive. Lastly over-sequalized garbage just to make money.

Imagine an archery bow. Each of the ends would be "Point A" and "Point B", and the bow itself the Kessel Run. Normally, pilots would have to travel across "the body of the bow" per say to use the Kessel smuggling route. What Han did was essentially fly across the bowstring. That meant getting in super close to the black hole at the center, which only a good pilot can manage to do without getting sucked into it. So the closer you can get to it, the more skilled of a pilot you must be. Took most pilots over 20 parsecs to fly it, so 12 is considered impressive

@@bilibiliism Star Wars managed to convey a specific tone in genre though through visual directing. There's a big difference between having war element's, western elements, mafia elements and visually changing the genre tone per so many scenes. Solo doesn't just take inspiration from these genres, the actual shots change from chaotic shaky cam and explosions that you'd see in a War movie, wide moving shots like a heist movie and then a close up of Han's gun and shot between the legs like a Western.. This is very distinctively different.

Technically it's a sci-fi dystopia war movie, then a sci-fi dystopia heist movie, then a sci-fi dystopia gangster movie, then a sci-fi dystopia western move. And if you take aware the sci-fi parts of all of those, you still get an incredibly viable movie. Too bad they took a viable idea and made it shit.
@DrMattPhillips6 жыл бұрын
@@please_recharge The issue though isn't that they borrowed ideas from specific genres, Star Wars space battles were war inspired and there was a lot of western ideas in the mix but it contained a consistent identity via it's directing and production design, but this movie literally jumps from genre to genre in every way visually through both art direction and the specific directing choices, which is probably because of the directing issues behind the scene. If they did the first movie based on Han Solo working for the Empire and have it as a War based movie, then did a sequel that focused more on the heist and gangster elements and then had the third film be about the Kessel Run it'd have both fleshed things out so it's not like everything is happening so soon and allowed growth and style wise felt more consistent.

Stormtroopers were for shipboard duty, small patrols, and critical areas, at least during this era, and through the Galactic Civil War. But having Chewie eat people that's just stupid Also it's not poker it's (poorly represented) Saaboc. And in the old EU, the Kessel run was measured how close you could get to the cluster of black holes (AKA The Maw) and still be fast enough to avoid capture or death by black hole. The Falcon, being one of the fastest craft in hyperspace could actually skirt dangerously close to the the Maw.
