I wasn’t aware that there were people who disliked the “Don’t choke on your aspirations” line from Vader. To me, it feels like a little bit of Anakin showing through... and it gives me a very “Scar from Lion King” vibe which I always love
@shredforceone

Vader is an incredibly dramatic character. Anakin's mannerisms show through that mask frequently and there are plenty of instances of it in Rebels and the comics. In one scene in Rebels, Vader is standing on top of his TIE Advanced as it descends below the surface of a planet. Not only is he flying his starship with the force, his cape is flapping in the wind, except, he's below the surface of a planet and there is no wind. He's using the force to make his cape flap. Because's he's dramatic and all about theatrics. Because he's Anakin Skywalker.

@@shredforceone Couldn't be truer. It's probably the only reason Anakin lived in Vader. Why he could come back. Not to mention Ahsoka and his encounters in Rebels. All feeding to Anakin overcoming the mask that was Vader and stopping Palpatine.

Vader’s depiction in this film is spot on. People saying the “take care not to choke” line is out of character, do you forget “apology accepted, Captain Needa”, “we would be honoured if you would join us”, or “the emperor is not as forgiving as I am”? Vader has always had a twisted sense of humour especially when it comes to his own violent behaviour. As for him holding his breath or turning off his life support in the hallway, he did literally the exact same thing in Empire twice during the fight with Luke, to ambush or frighten him. For all the reeing and soiling of nappies “purists” do whenever some new Star Wars thing gets released, it really feels like they didn’t watch the original trilogy at all. *Edit: Darth Vader is also still Anakin Skywalker, and Anakin Skywalker is absolutely that dramatic

The more that Star Wars has focused on Jedi, the worse it has got. Seems backwards, but these films work better when there are less Jedi and very little explanation of them. It’s not so much about being a hipster, i.e. hating things because they are/became popular, it’s more like you look at really popular things like pop music (I don’t like that) and then popular youtube channels (I generally haven’t enjoyed those) and there is a trend that makes you think that popular things must be for people who aren’t yourself. Also, there’s something of a desire to be different. There are 7 billion people on this earth and you want to be someone who is unique, so you’re not allowed to like popular things, since that would rope you in with the popular crowd. It surely makes no sense, since as I said before, there are 7 billion people so you’re going to have a lot in common with SOMEONE, but I digress

I can honestly say that rogue one is my absolute favorite Star Wars movie. It’s not about crazy aliens or epic lightsaber duels. It’s about people. It’s about war. It’s about the ideologies that drive the empire and the rebellion. It shows the darkness within the light and the light within the darkness. It shows everything that we all knew was there but never got to see. Because of this it is (in my opinion) the best Star Wars movie.

I wonder at the specified order of _"...single reactor ignition..."_ Does this mean the activation of a single high-impulse reactor tied into the superlaser... ...or does it mean "Forget about any of the high-impulse systems. Power up the superlaser with energy drawn from just the main reactor core." Because 2% implies they didn't crack open the high-octane stuff. They just cranked off a shot using the starter battery, as it were.

In Empire the ship that saves Han and Luke on Hoth is called ‘Rogue Two’ however in this film they say “Rogue One? There is no Rogue One”. I like to think that after the stuff on Scarif, when they were trying to think of a callsign for those Hoth ships, they chose to honour the crew of Rogue One by naming a squad after them but not have a replacement ‘Rogue One’. They made them a squadron
@TechLeafRanger
@TechLeafRanger 4 жыл бұрын
It's actually a nod to/reference to the squadron Luke Skywalker would be given command of not that long after the Battle of Yavin. Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles would form Rogue Squadron, a group of rebel Pilots who would become among the elite of the Rebel Starfighter Corp. On Hoth, the pilot who finds Han and Luke is Zev, who's call sign is Rogue Two, much like Luke's in the Battle of Yavin was Red 5. Luke himself was Rogue Leader/Rogue One, as he was the squadron commander. After The battle of Hoth, Wedge would become the new leader of Rogue Squadron, as Luke would go on to further his Jedi studies and found the New Jedi Order. Here in this movie, I think it's Gareth's way of giving a nod to the fans, because Rogue Squadron in the EU were well known for their exploits both in the air and on the ground in aiding the Rebel Alliance, alongside other squadrons like Wraith Squadron. So he created the idea that they started off with Jyn and Cassian on Scarif.

The novelization of this movie is honestly... amazing. The deaths of the heroes are made just... a hundred times more heartbreaking since they all take place from a purely internal point of view. K-2SO calculating his way through that entire fight, just working at every second to give Cassian and Jin the best chance of success that he could... and Chirrut... repeating his mantra within his head as he makes his sacrifice, over and over again as a rhythmic punctuation of what he is doing, with no sense of visuals to what is going on, because the visual is not part of his personal experience. Interracial relationship must be between nonwhites only? Finn and Rey can't get together, he must get distracted away from it with stupid Rose Tico who Disney cared so little about, they got a random minor actress from CollegeHumor with no experience in film. Oh, and Asian Rose Tico has to shoulder the Fat Quota.

'not leave the theater all weepy and depressed' excuse you, this movie made me cry! No joke, watching each member slowly die freaking killed me. The only one that didn't really effect me was the pilot. Baze holding Chirrut as he died, his clear sorrow over the loss of someone he CLEARLY loved, it hurt. K-2SO sacrificing himself after only JUST having accepted Jyn as a FRIEND made my eyes BURN and my throat close up, and then Jyn and Cassian staring out at the wave of destruction headed towards them, then collapsing in an embrace, accepting their deaths, knowing that they did all they could and it was now in the hands of the rest of the resistance... I was in genuine tears. I won't lie, I absolutely love this movie, as much as I love The Force Awakens, as much as I love Revenge of the Sith. Any film that can genuinely move me to tears is exceptional in my book. Also, K-2SO was my favorite non-human character, and my favorite human is a tie between Cassian (as you pointed out, he shows a side of the rebels we've NEVER seen before, something that's never even been HINTED at in the films, by outright killing the guy with one arm, yet he's still a genuinely likable character) and Chirrut.

Wield it is a different thing, listen to it as it tells you things is something else, and jirot did listen. I really liked this movie. And it's because it reminded me of Halo Reach. "I know we're losing, I want to know if we've lost." as Kat puts it can make for some excellent stories, in my opinion. That desperation, and the fact that characters have to (sometimes literally) pick a hill to die on. When death is certain, what do you do with what you have left? And when the answer is "go down fighting," you can get movie magic. Also, that bleakness was the entire point of this film. Note how the only lightsaber is red. No Jedi coming to the rescue with space magic. They have to make do with what's available. And Vader in the hallway is superb. Shows exactly why he was the most feared man in the galaxy. He was the face of the Empire, Palpatine's chief enforcer. Carved through those rebel soldiers like they were a minor annoyance.

Number of reasons. For one there isn't that much happening. It's an incredibly long story that largely boils down to "That's why the deathsstar could be taken down like that". Then some of the CG stuff, like Tarkin and Leia. Then some of the character undermining. Leia got pretty much all of the credit for stealing the death star plans, yet she just sat on the ship and had one of the guys who actually stole them hand her a thingy with the plans on it. Same with Tarkin. He was portrayed as the guy who orchestrated the death star in the first place, but now we learn that he merely pinched the idea from some other imperial admiral. And Darth Vader was on the ship behind the tantive IV, watching it leave, yet Leia just five minutes later tried to tell him that she is on a peaceful mission and a part of the galactic senate, when Vader just saw her ship taking off from with the death star plans inside, yet he doesn't call her out on it. The movie basically makes a lot of the original characters seem way less impressive than they were, and a lot of people didn't like that.

He uses the force to strangle another man! In EMPIRE, he chokes several men to death using the force, and he stops blaster bolts with his hand and uses the force to snatch Han's weapon away from him! To be fair, I could've worded that better. I meant to say that he was threatening, I just think that the way the hallway scene was filmed kind of felt like it put me in the rebels shoes. It's a fairly subtle difference, but if I was a rebel in ANH, if I saw Vader I'd probably be like, "It's Vader! Run!". Whereas Rogue One's is like "Oh God! I'm going to die! Please Help!" How about we agree that Vader was awesome, and that Kylo Ren, whilst being a prodigy (it takes some power, talent, and cunning to wipe out Jedi), still can't quite compare to his grandfather. In fact, that's one of the things that irks Kylo, he wants to be so much like his grandfather, but he just can't reach his level. Hence him being seduced by Snoke.

This is legitimately my favourite Star Wars film. It demonstrates the main themes of the Stars Wars rebellion, hope and the willingness to give everything for the greater cause, and really shows us the individual sacrifices required for the macro-level battles we see in the Original Trilogy and humanizes the rebellion and their sacrifices. Hearing the breathing, the lightsaber ignition, then watching Vader go HAM in the hallway was one of the greatest Star Wars experiences in the fandom. Finally, we're not hearing how feared Vader is, we get to see it. And shout out to that actor playing the rebel commando that is first in line to see Vader. Great bit of physical acting. Luigiofthegods That and what CinemaWins has said about that encounter in previous videos... it's not about who's better with a light saber, it's about toying with your adversary. Obi-Wan doesn't go all out, because he's just creating a distraction for Luke and uses the opportunity to become a Force ghost, which is definitely a better existence for his purposes for the plot at that point (both realistically and from a film-making standpoint). Vader lost the last battle he had against Obi-Wan, so maybe it's caution despite Kenobi's age and appearance... Obi-Wan was thought to be dead, so his being alive came as a surprise and shows Vader his ability to survive. Or maybe he's just being a proper Sith and toying with his adversary like a cat plays with a mouse before killing it.

One of the subtexts I really dig in this movie is the clash between Krennic and Tarkin. Krennic has a rougher accent, maybe a speech impediment (he tends to slur his S's), and loses his composure fighting to prove himself. Versus Tarkin's patrician, pointed Received Pronunciation diction, and unflappable imperious attitude. Even in the Imperial elite, there's a hint of classism.
@weldonwin
@weldonwin 6 жыл бұрын
I can add to that, since its been said that the British accents in Star Wars are 'Coreward' accents, common to the upper class populations of the Core worlds and the more American sounding accents are 'Rimwards' more asocciated with the outer rim. If Krennic was from an outer rim world, then he's had that going against him too and he's done everything to remake himself in the image of Coreward high society, especially since the Empire places such a strong emphasis on the Core Worlds as the cradle of High Human Culture

One thing is "not liking as much" which I get, considering that running away from nostalgia is pretty darn hard. However, there's that and there's absolutely hating the films without any constructive criticism, and that fact which you said about critics hating the Vader scene absolutely baffles me. But still while watching it I had my fangirl moments and all things considert a good time I never loved the movie and I never started hating it with the backlash. I liked Rouge One a great deal more actually, it is my favorite Star Wars movie since Jedi, but still the Characters are not very well flashed out ( and there are so many of them to get to know in just one movie). Well, the thing about TFA is that, as cool as it is, it does commit some serious sins, of which copying the ANH material is by far the biggest. It made the movie too predictable. The second biggest sin is that the big bad guy isn't very big and bad due to some unforeseen happenstances (being mentally weak, getting injured). We measure the heroism and the struggle of the protagonist by the power of the antagonist and the terror he causes. In the end all we know is that Kylo was unlucky and is a crybaby, while Rey didn't really get tested. So they were both weak, that's not very exciting in the final battle of a movie. Yes, there's also the First Order with their big fuck off space gun, but there's a problem with that - Rey had little to no control over her destiny, as I'll explain in a moment. By far the biggest heroes in the movie are Finn and Han Solo. Han faces Kylo, risking his life and testing his emotional strength, because he thinks Leia might be right, which gives him hope and courage. Finn fears the First order with every fiber of his body, but he decides to quit running and picks up the sword against all odds because of his beliefs. Now that's a strong man! The third sin is that Rey is inconsistent, partially because her motives are unclear. On Takodana she tries to convince Finn to stay and fight, then after seeing visions she says to Maz "I don't want any part of this". So she wants Finn - who wants to run from the war - to be a hero, but she wants to run from her destiny herself? Uh-huh Rey, you fail, sit down. After that, most things that happen to her are a result of the plot moving forward, her decisions are largely irrelevant. Then Han dies, and somewhere out there there's Luke, but why would Rey care? Didn't she want to escape the whole thing and go back to Jakku? What happened to that? So after the whole debacle her motives don't make sense, and it remains unexplained. Now, I know that the fourth sin is very controversial. Some people say that Rey is too skilled, others say that it was very much the same with young Luke Skywalker. I'm torn on the issue. I can live with it, but I think her abilities could've been made more believable. Ah whatever, it's fine. Lets say both Luke and Rey are too skilled, I'm ok with that :) It's also the reason why I'm convinced that Rey is Luke's daughter. She has to be, her powers don't make sense otherwise. I just would've liked it if her powers got more acknowledgement in the movie. If I was Rey's companion I'd constantly be wondering who the fuck she is and why she can do all these things. The fifth sin is absolutely undeniable: Captain Phasma should be imposing, but she's a laughing stock. Why does she lower the shields? She should just refuse and risk getting killed. This was so bad, terrible, unacceptable. I'm removing one whole point out of ten from my personal rating just because of that one scene. Now, TFA does some things absolutely right. As in many other SW movies, the robot unit - BB-8 - almost steals the show. It's my favorite character. General Hux was my second favorite. It's amazing how well he played the villain. The Millennium Falcon chasing scene was incredible, one of my favorites. And the opening scene with Kylo and the stormtroopers, just superb. Han Solo meeting Leia, loved it. The big fuck off planet destruction scene followed by Hux's speech was mostly how I would envision it. I could go on, but I'm too lazy right now. It's a great movie, it just commits some big sins, that's all.
@PetersaberHD
@PetersaberHD 7 жыл бұрын
I hate TFA with passion. There is not a single original bit in it. 60% of it is A New Hope ripoff, 40% of it is elements outright stolen from Legends, just named differently or in a slightly different coat of paint, including the characters, which happen to unfortunetly be flattened - they took rich and complex characters from Legends and made them Mary Sues or completly two-dimensional tropes. When I left the theater I thought "I've seen all of this already". Sure, it was visually impressive, but we don't watch movies for visuals alone, right? On the other hand, Rogue One has to be one of my favourites.

I've been a Star Wars fanboy since before it was "A New Hope", way back in 1977. I LOVED this film and thought that it was everything that the prequels weren't. If you've ever read the novelization of "Revenge of the Sith" by Matthew Stover you know exactly what I mean. Vader's scene at the end (and The Mandalorian taught us that you should NEVER get caught in a corridor when fighting against a Skywalker!) and the rage he displays is a perfect lead-in to the anger you see at the beginning of Episode IV. Throughout the rest of the OT he's essentially calm as he destroys people and things. Rogue One even explains his display of emotions on Tantive IV.

The weirdest criticisms I've heard about Rogue One have to do with cynicism about Star Wars having lost its purity by becoming a money-making venture. Like, do the words "Holiday Special" not ring a bell? A Christmas variety TV cash-in. C-3PO had his own friggin' BREAKFAST CEREAL in the 1980s! To fans of the classics who think SW lost some sort of purity by becoming a franchise, I have to ask... Where have you been for the last four decades?

in fact, one of the biggest reasons Ep. I had a bad script was because Lucas didn't have enough time to finish the script, and Lucas Films (against Lucas' own wishes) decided not to delay the film and give the script an extra period to make a second draft. Star Wars has been a money making venture since Ep. V and onwards.

Star Wars is so popular it's going to make money no matter what. Even if it produced a film good enough to win the Oscars it would still make 500 million minimum. I think Star Wars is popular enough, and Disney is rich enough, that they can produce good films that ALSO make money. They just haven't done that outside of Rogue One.

Viredae - Lucas had 15 years to finish the script for Episode 1 - should have concentrated on that instead of the unneccessary special editions! Better still, he should have concentrated on making the sequels whilst Hamill, Ford and Fisher were still young enough to have carried on the story a few years later not decades later! We are now faced with 30 years of questions to be answered but, if TLJ is anything to go, by they'll just be cast aside the way they casually cast aside Snoke and also Rey's parents!

This was an incredible star wars movie. It was dirty, gritty and visceral. The fact that there was no miraculous escape made it that much more deeply inspiring. I love the way that they conveyed a sense of cold and mercilessness tactics perpetrated by both the opposing sides of the conflict. It was a stand-alone, which is fitting because it works beautifully without the need to use a sequel as a proverbial crutch.

My daughter and I sat spellbound throughout the entire movie, trying desperately to piece the little nuggets together and see where they fit in the OT. Boy, we were not disappointed. And we were so happy...until the CGI Princess Leia/Carrie Fisher came on. Then we had tears. No one told us, so we were not prepared for this bit of nostalgia just a week after Carrie passed away. We walked out of the theatre completely stunned. Your assessment of this movie is pure gold. I see your POV about the haters; everyone is entitled to their opinions--even if they are wrong. Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see your take on "Rise of Skywalker".

I'll probably get burnt at the stake for this but, this is my favorite Star Wars movie. I love the tone, I think it fits the war aspect of it. As much as I love the O.G trilogy you don't really feel the war and the oppression from the Empire, you hear about it, but you don't see it. In this movie I really feel like the Empire has to be defeated at all cause for the good of the universe.

Yeah, O.G. trilogy deserve respect because this universum which people around the world love was created with first three movies, but Rogue 1 developed it to whole new level. It still has funny androids, adventure scenery, but now plot is much more anticipaded, just like it always should have been. When he said "enjoyed seeing the 1984 version of Star Wars eluded to in episode IV..." it took me 2 rewinds to finally realize what he meant. Because at first I kept saying to myself "wtf is he talking about, episode IV is from 1977, not 1984 - what is he talking about?!?" Until I finally realized he meant/was referencing "1984" as in not the year of the movie, but as in the "1984 novel, totalitarian government, big brother is watching you/no freedom" type of political atmosphere living under the yolk of tyranny of the Empire and not a reference to the year of the movie.

Rogue One is the only Star Wars movie I consider good. The rest are bland, over the top and poorly shot with mediocre special effects and relatively goofy (even for its time, the original SW movies had shit special effects minus some scenes like the battle of Hoth.) Everything about Rogue One was meticulously created and shot, the audio was great, the visuals were great, the story was gritty and showed a dark side of the rebellion that had to exist. I almost took Star Wars from fantasy to pure sci-fi, something that I always felt would be necessary. Which is why I think a lot of people hate it. It's not charming in the same sense as the original SW movies.

His power vibrated through the air and in between my muscles and vital organs. The terrified screams of his victims caused my blood to quicken and vessels to constrict as my heart cried out. The pale red glow was an omen of certain death that brief blaster flashes could punctuate but not truly defeat. It was unbelievable.. both Vader and Sidious were unfortunately victims of the technological limitations of their time but *now* we can see them as they truly are
