6:25 - in international logistics/not sailor - but using Suez Canal would have been about the same distance as going around the Cape of Good Hope. The Suez gets congested with other ships as does Gibraltar, so you would potentially lose some time around those points. Not ideal when you're carrying livestock. Going south from Suez forces a ship to be exposed to all of Somalia and the piracy that comes with it. Lastly, unless that ship is chartered/carrying a full load of goods from New York to Kenya, it will be making other stop along the way to pick up more cargo/discharge cargo from New York. Makes the voyage more economical.
