Star Trek Beyond, the third entry to this current series, is actually pretty fun, and was a bright spot in a horrible summer of movies. Still not perfect, so here are its sins.
Thursday: Another space movie.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

George Takei actually was upset they made Sulu gay. It was because they only wanted to change it for marketing instead of making any of the new characters gay. Thanks to the people who told me the reason why!

PeridotPlumbob he was upset because it differed from Roddenberry's character and was done for no reason other than marketing.

PeridotPlumbob it was because he played the character as straight as that was how he was written, so I think he felt like it went against how the character was originally, also the scene was only up for a couple of seconds, and he didn't see the point of making a well known character gay for like 2 seconds

Gene Roddenberry originally wanted to make Sulu gay. Takei knew this and was fine with making the original Sulu gay, but the attitudes of the time wouldn't let them so he was straight. When Star Trek Beyond announced that Sulu was going to be gay Takei wanted a new character introduced to be the gay character instead of making any of the originals gay.

It's nice that it sets itself apart from the first two decently. Also cool to see a TOS-type Starbase realized with modern SFX. It's just that it crashes an Enterprise in record time, debuts the Enterprise A just like in IV, does the theme of wartime nostalgists trying to perpetuate war just like VI, and long-lived aliens who used to look human just like IX. Derivative.

It really is. The 2009 film is my absolute favourite - I make a point of watching it at least once a month - and although "...Into Darkness" wasn't crap, I still spent about 2yrs praying that this one was at the very least not shit. It is most emphatically Not Shit, and made me feel happy and warm inside.

I think so. The climax is stupid, though, albeit in but a fun way. Mostly I liked it because the characters felt like slightly updated takes on their TOS counterparts in all their interactions, to the point where this really felt like a TOS adventure on the big screen. And I don't mean a "continuation" like the original 6 movies; I mean this could have taken place during the TOS timeframe and would fit right in with the feel of that series.

This is partially true, although it is unclear if they developed it in this reality. You may be referring to the Treaty of Algeron in 2311, in the original reality. It was in this treaty, between the Romulans and the Federation, that Starfleet / UFP agreed not to develop cloaking technology. This is almost 50 years after 2263. So it's likely that the Kelvin universe isn't that far along.

What is it with Star Trek nerds being completely unable to separate e.g. the TV series from the late '80s/early '90s from a completely set-apart movie series that didn't come out until the late 2000s and is set a century or so in the fictional world's past?

Bats took out half of them on his own. That, and he was a normal man who stood shoulder to shoulder with virtual gods in the JLA. I only half meant it, to me it was all in fun as I'm not even a Batman fan, and it's all just comic books and movies. I agree on your second point to an extent but aren't they only standard on the newer versions of the enterprise? In TOS the Enterprise couldn't go above a certain warp factor (maybe 6ish?) for long because it compromised the structural integrity but later versions (TNG+) could sustain higher warp factors because of the force fields.

CinemaSins: I guess I am a nitpicker. At 8:50 you asked why the Federation wasn't using cloaking technology if they had Romulan/Klingon like cloaking technology. It's it's because the Federation is allied with the Vulcans who have treaties with the Klingons that state they can't have cloaking technology if they want to maintain peace. So the Federation falls under that category as well due to the fact that we are aligned with the Vulcans. Atleast I believe that's correct I could be making a sin lol. Really like the videos.

The Enterprise is the most advanced starship in the Federation fleet, so yea it should last a good long while..... until someone outsmarts or outguns them OR until a new more advanced cutting edge comes along and is even MORE cutting edge. Kirks Enterprise is a pop-gun compared to Harrimans Enterprise (B). What it comes down to is; the Enterprise (Pick which one) is just another ship in the fleet, especially when it remains in service for an extended period. look at it this way; the USS Odyssey was a Galaxy class starship, same as the Enterprise D. At the time of it's destruction the Galaxy classes where the most advanced starships in the fleet, YET the Jem 'Hadar wiped them out simply to prove a point. go back even further to the battle of Wolf 359 and you get a good look at what ONE Borg cube can do to 39 starships (The number of ships destroyed at wolf 359, 11,000 deaths) NOW if you want a real-world example. The Air-craft carrier Enterprise was made inactive in 2013. She served for 51 years, however her TCHNOLOGY makes her more advanced than ANY Russian carrier currently in active service. In other words Russia's most ADVANCED Carrier would be floored by our THIRD OLDEST NAVEL VESEL the USS Enterprise. In this analogy, the "Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Kuznetsov" (Still in service) Is the Federation fleet. And our 51 year old retired Enterprise is the single Borg cube. In summarization the term "Most advance" is relative as all hell. Thus applies to any Starfleet vessel.

I loved Beyond. I personally kinda like the first reboot a bit more, but only just barely. I honestly think a lot of Trekkies just wanna worship their Roddenberry material that honestly wasn't as good as they make it seem. I'm a Trekkie and love what he did, but he was far from perfect. I love how this franchise evolves.

@sarahsiddiqui6494 7 жыл бұрын
Travis Linton I completely agree with you. I loved the reboot too. The characters were given just the right amount of "changes" and the rest was preserved. I just like this one slightly better for the introduction of an original character by the new franchise (Jaylah). As for the hate on the new franchise people generally don't factor in the time Rodenberry was working in, if he had the technology they have now he would have made the action this lively too.

However, that tech wasn't so advanced at the time. Around the TNG era, it could only be used in a room designed for the purpose. You can't even argue that the change in timeline accelerated the development because the only Starfleet tech available is from two centuries before the TNG era- that's a lot of time, and it's from before the two timelines diverged, so accelerated development doesn't matter anyway. I suppose the tech could've been taken from a more advanced species, as such tech was shown by aliens in an episode of Enterprise. However, that does bring up the question of when and how she was able to do so.
@ryokuhasu9699
@ryokuhasu9699 7 жыл бұрын
TheOriginalJphyper well in TNG we see the first full environments using many projectors latticed together to generate multiple characters, items, and even multiple locations by bending individual perspective in a tiny room. It's not hard to imagine that early projectors were on tripods and had limited functionality and would be fairly stationary when projecting a simpler image like a single combatant or 2 on a bike. Then in the later part of the millennium the tech goes back to smaller compact, but much more powerful, projectors for highly complex holograms as we see in Voyager.

This really made it hit home for me some leaps and or/gaps in logic that I felt while watching that I just couldn’t get past like the holograms physically hitting but unable to be hit and the fact that Krall assumes that Starfleet abandoned him not that he was basically impossible to find and/or get to through the nebula. Things like this just kept on bothering me to the point I just wanted the movie to end, especially because I didn’t understand/buy Krall’s motivations in pretty much any way. Excellent SFX and great characters though.

The Enterpise surivies unscathed, whille the rest of the fleet is never seen again due to the fact they were atimized by said mining ship. They have had sheilds save the day many times, even hiding from renogade Borg by hiding in a sun. Problem is, they have come so much to rely on sheild they have little actual defeses should they fail for any reason.

Okay, where to begin... "(source: Star Trek: First Contact)" But they might not have them back in the original era, that movie is from the TNG/DS9 era. "Inertial dampeners keep Kirk standing while the ship is toppling" And we can see from the TNG AND TOS that those inertial dampeners aren't worth a damn, since a slight bump makes the entire ship shake so much that the crew has to steady themselves on something. "The federation has a treaty that restricts them from using cloaking technology" This is from way before that time. The war that made them sign that treaty was after TOS. Do you even Star Trek, bro? Edit: There's also a big difference between refraction of light and stealth that'll also hide a vessel's energy signature. This didn't hide the energy, merely refracted the light.

Sin at 15:45 - People and things are never "sucked" into space. Space is a vacuum. They get BLOWN into space. (Air pressure is greater on the spacecraft, seeks to reach equilibrium with the absence of air in space, hence blown and not sucked. )

The cloaking ship part, I have got something to say about that. The federation does have the tech, but it draw a lot of energy and before that they would recharge the shields, if they implemented the cloak it would practically take out the shield recharger
@AndrewMeyer
@AndrewMeyer 7 жыл бұрын
I thought they reason they couldn't use cloaking tech was because of a treaty with the Klingons (or Romulans?) where they basically agreed not to develop cloaking technology. They actually do have the technology anyway, but that's a secret and they can't use it in any real ships in order to avoid altering the Klingons to the fact that they violated the treaty. Or is that only canon in the Star Trek TV series? Or maybe I'm just misremembering, I have no idea.

The federation to keep the peace with the romulans they agreed not to create or use cloaking technology. They were desperate to not be at war with them so they agreed to this. Since DS9 they were allowed to have cloak, but only to be used in the Gamma Quadrant to fight the dominion.

@MisterJohnMorales 7 жыл бұрын
Yet with far more limited resources, she constructs something very similar that is infinitely more adaptable than anything the Romulans ever did with it though to DS9, and is able to utilize it at will without any of her energy use tipping off Krall. The point is not that you are wrong. Rather the flaw is due to the whole story being so haphazardly contrived that there is no point in trying to explain the contradiction with anything other than "because, star trek."
@djeinis
@djeinis 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah the federation has better cloaking tech than either the Romulans or the Klingons, The federation apparently developed phase cloak that made their ships invisible and intangible (TNG The Pegasus) but they aren't allowed to use it due to the treaty of algeron, Even though the Romulans seem violate that treaty by crossing the neutral zone every 5 minutes.

I believe some people have a fear of transporters, similar to how people in real life still have a fear of flying, and regardless of the statistics. I also remember an episode of _Deep Space Nine_ where Sisko is talking about beaming home weekly when first away for training and how it cost credits, so maybe the train is cheaper, or free. Then there is the issue of appropriate use, since in real life a person would not generally get on an aircraft to go a few towns over, but would take ground transportation (car, bus, train). There could numerous reasons not to use such a technology, or use it all the time. Maybe even provided services are rationed based on amounts and/or type of use, but once those rations are used, or if the use is outside definitions, the person has to pay out of pocket. Maybe transporter usage is something that still needs to be kept track of for health monitoring, similar to getting x-rays, flying at high altitudes...

sage11x i think we have to kind of separate the past 3 star treks and the traditional Star Trek. Trust me I love the old films and series (not DS9 tho I'm sorry)... but given that films are about having fast pacing and more action, this film managed to kind of capture a little bit about what a typical Star Trek away mission would be but also give us good action.

I love this movie. Great job pointing out all the crap, but also acknowledging all the good. I don't think I've ever seen you remove so many sins one at a time before. The Kelvin Timeline movies are good, but they aren't perfect, and "true" fans of Trek hate them because they fear change, or are from the Mirror Universe, or midichlorians or something. Despite their foibles, and there are many, they are still true to the spirit of Trek, and a lot of fun, something Trek had been missing for a long time. We'll never see another one, but the three we have are a nice little peek into what could have been.

lol.. 'Scotty you f'ng liar!' Scotty's schtick has always been that of being able to do the virtually impossible, just not the absolutely impossible. Starfleet has always worked on forms of holographic or otherwise cloaking technology, they just halted and abandoned doing it and abandoned it when they brokered a treaty with the Romulans. Kirk cheating death is his schtick. Spock being more human than he claims is his schtick except in rare private dramatic scenes. Mining drones in the Star Trek universe are (relative to the technology) easily modified into being swarmer attack drones. I love what they are doing with the Kelvin timeline... even though it seems that the actors in it are killing that because of other ambitions. Great video CinemaSins.
