In this video I'm going to show you how to color grade footage from any camera to give it the filmic look. Awesome video!. I'm very new to davinci (came from sony vegas) and I do appreciate this tutorials you give out. I do have the free version but idk if it can have dehancer or not. Maybe its worth it upgrading to pro version? idk. But a few questions. From your examples, I see that if I use dehancer, its going to make my image achieve that nice colour look with the settings tweaked. For the nodes, I see you make 3 nodes, the first one to adjust any to your image, 2nd one and 3rd one is the dehancer adjustments. What's the second one do in your workflow? I also see other creators that they have 30 nodes for 1 clip but idk if that's correct or not (looks overwhelming). Is it really ok to just have a few nodes like 1 - 3 for one clip? Thank you!

Thanks so much for watching! I believe with the free version you will be able to add dehancer but I believe you can't export out either in 4k or 10 bit color, so I definitely recommend getting the paid version. If you're looking to save some money since it comes every Blackmagic product some people sell their Davinci license on eBay! www.ebay.com/itm/395521053405?epid=127914144&itmmeta=01J2AQV4B4GD8J1EQKSFWN4EG4&hash=item5c16e452dd:g:RAAAAOSwndZmjCYs&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8MhLvgfyjAIXXgFvkNHvK4fO2%2FWkleWDkAT%2B39yub0zKZW2ceeuWP9%2FLbpSRCMOAdHe1tlhPrgHqOS0%2BzVXsYxCaMol69Ln0G9RDq18jMRjdmiYpEbvlS37cCrSee%2BqXlFx5SxnA79z7kGuVBa6q1puE78yBgTPBW4FDCr31JUlhC5DwBUv8SvPdOxBYo0J04l2PPb6tfKQ%2FSKPNa7UVF7vfp4e5HnkQ8y2emmxaXIXufkY91xuEBNJNYxvrnqABNAzr46OTh8E%2FKYXQKQqHrVERhzxCBPDBSPQg%2BoEHLrXI43UYLJEV31mg6GE%2BEtJo2g%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBM0sXs15Jk

Great question! So typically I leave a 2nd node just in case I want to make finer adjustments to my skin tones, for example in this dehancer video I made last year I did make skin tone adjustments around 3:08 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWbPoXSDZpificksi=6_WbP8T66O_AKI5E . However since then dehancer has gotten some updates, it's getting to the point where I don't always need to make skin tone adjustments! I have seen some creators use a lot of nodes for their color grade and that will definitely allow them to make a ton of fine adjustments to every color and tone they'd like. However for my workflow I find with dehancer 2-4 nodes is usually the max I use and it only takes a few minutes to grade each clip! Also cool tip if you didn't already know if you got a good grade on one clip, just select all nodes and you can paste that to your other clips to save some time :) Let me know if this helps!

interesting! Considering buying a Nikkor AI-S lens for a video recording that should look vintage. Thinking if it’s smarter to buy a Dehancer Pro license and film with my Sony GM lenses since they are easy to use and reliable. Tried Dehancer and like color grading with that plugin. What would you do if you had to choose? Could you achieve a similar characteristic to what you get from your Nikkor lenses with Dehancer and modern glass?😀

Hey Stefan, great question! So 9/10 times I’m using my modern lenses with dehancer, simply because having reliable autofocus is more priority to me as a solo operator. While I don’t think modern lenses can give the exact look of the Nikkor lenses, mainly the bokeh wide open and and character on the edges of the frame, I find dehancer more suited to most my use cases. If I’m going into a shoot wanting it to feel more like a film and I’ll be behind the camera 100% of the time (not filming myself), I’d probably choose a vintage lens. However in terms of the blooming, halation, and overall color, with your GM lenses I’d say you can get fairly close with dehancer and when watching on a phone the difference between dehancer and cintage lenses is probably pretty minimal. I think the difference would be very noticeable when watching on a movie screen or tv tho! Let me know if this helps, I’ll try to make a comparison video in the next month or so :)

@@victor.melchorfilm That would be an interesting comparison! My thought, after using the Dehancer Pro demo, is that the impact the plugin can be quite significant when playing with grain, their Print profiles, etc., compared to the contrast and color difference I see in comparisons between modern and 20-year-old lenses. But it would be interesting to see what happens if you grade with a Nikkor lens and then try to replicate this with a modern lens😀. I have a friend who has a lot of Canon FD and Minolta lenses, so I can experiment myself by just buying adapters

@@stefansundstrom6755 Yep, I totally agree! At the end of the day if you can get a good filmic looking grade out of your footage with good lighting you can achieve a really nice look regardless of the lens!
