this was probably the most helpful KZbin color video ive seen next to Cullen Kellys stuff. Especially that trick with cleaning up neutrals. Thats a huge challenge sometimes with camera work in forests where everything is yellow green even after a general balance. The slight reduction on lift is perfect.

Just want to let you know that you can do the same functions in your HSL look nodes with the color slice tool instead. The color slice saturation slider applies saturation in a way that doesn't increase luminance which is the same as what you're doing with your HSL workflow. It will save you the time of disabling channel 1 & 3 every time.

Hey George. I revisited this video to get densed colour in saturation and I did exactly what you did here - inside compound node, hsv and hsl. The colour density turned out great but it also created somewhat weird artifacts to my footage. What did I do wrong and how to solve it please?
@george.colorist
@george.colorist 24 күн бұрын
Go easy with these adjustments-it's easy to introduce artifacts, especially when using the Lift and Gamma wheels. Unless you're working with high-quality footage, avoid adding HSV or HSL saturation with the Lift wheel. The Gamma wheel is generally fine, but keep an eye on the shadows. The Gain wheel is the most flexible, so if you're noticing artifacts, try sticking to that one.

This workflow was in a Resolve Color Managed timeline. Resolve converts for you so you just apply the same workflow you see in this tutorial. If you're using regular DaVinci YRGB (not color managed) for your color science, use a CST to convert your log footage and keep the CST at the end of the node tree so all the adjustments are before the CST node.

The HDR panel is color space sensitive so it refers to the timeline color space to calculate adjustments. For example, if your footage is S-Log3 and your timeline color space setting is set to Rec.709 or something else that's not SLog3, adjustments done in the HDR color wheels will behave like that. You can set the Color Space and Gamma in the HDR panel settings (3 dots on the top right of the panel).

This is great! I am a little confused about the part where you talk about inverting the matte to make sure it only affects the blacks - how do I do this or how do I know it's done right!

You can invert the selection in the Key palette. Select Shift+H on keyboard to see the selection you are creating with the matte.

Your HSV and HSL Saturation nodes are very interesting, Do you apply all your saturation like that?

Not always.

@@george.colorist I'm using this as my default saturation, any disadvantage???
@george.colorist

@@PiingpeiPictures HSV sat can be a little strong and can easily create artifacts if you apply too much so just keep a good eye on your image. Besides that it just depends on what kind of look you want. If you want dense colors, HSV saturation is a good choice but maybe not for other kinds of looks.

I just wanna know what type of nodes you're adding 😅

They're serial nodes. Any time someone adds a basic node in Resolve, its a serial node. I'll mention it if I'm adding a different kind of node.

Thank you for not using techno or "upbeat rock" music in the background, I can focus a lot better with this calm music.
