"What... the actual f⛄🎄🦌?" 🤣 That was pretty much how a long-gone movie critic in my own hometown of Asheville, NC, writing for the MOUNTAIN XPRESS, felt about having to review almost every Tyler Perry-Madea movie that seemed to come out each year... and how he felt after seeing each one! (And believe me, while he was alive and I was a member of the Asheville Film Society who attended the screenings he hosted, I could tell that his openly-voiced opinions perfectly, fully mirrored his writing in the reviews!) Merry Christmas, Smeghead - this review was a great present that came out just in time!

You finally did this one! 🙂 As a woman of color, I HATE Madea but CAN'T hate Tyler Perry for being a successful businessman and finding his niche. Ironically two of the few things me and my very religious mom agree on are this: 1. "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" is a good movie, and 2. the later Madea movies are offensive and ridiculous. Great video, as usual! Happy Holidays and see you in 2023!

As an African American I have some mixed feelings about Tyler Perry. On the one hand, he has given jobs to a lot of talented black actors. My grandmother tried to get me into Madea when I was 17 or 18 (34 now) and back then, I totally just didn't get it. I mean, I _got_ it, but I knew then and there I was not the target audience. Madea has a following because Tyler Perry knows full well who his audience is and because of the low budget most of his work costs, as pointed out in the video. But his audience is niche and almost always gets negative feedback when it comes to mainstream publications. Perry is not a good writer, director, or storyteller and almost all of his works have the same beat-for-beat progression with the same unfunny jokes repeated ad nauseum. But I won't say that Perry is a bad actor or completely lacking in effort or ethic. Usually when he's a side character (or anybody that isn't Madea), he's actually pretty good; the best example being his character in Gone Girl. And I do have to give props to the fact that he funds most of his work with his own money while providing work for up-and-coming actors and crew members through his studio. It's just a shame that he really isn't that funny on his own and often panders to...well, let's face it, the dumbest of audiences.

I must say that you did a fantastic job navigating around in this review. Most white reviewers shy away from black films to avoid racist accusations but you clearly researched the creator and have a fundamental understanding of the work and judged based on THAT. I hate this character myself and HATE whenever he makes me laugh as her. Dude plays her so well that he can't play other roles. It just sounds like he is suppressing Madea in every role. Anyway.. Good job, guy... Cinema Sins can learn something from you. Whenever they do black films it's clear they don't understand the culture... You tried.

I LOATHE Perry's work. Spike Lee was right. I've seen Meet the Browns, Daddy's Little Girls and Why Did I Get Married, all as a result of a corporate outing to see /support "Black" films ( as social outings for a corporate African American affinity group). Perry made me adopt the mantra that all Black "cinema" doesn't need my personal support. His stories are weak, his scripts laughable, characters are generally one-note, his embrace of Christianity is simplistic at best and yeah, Madea is pretty much a modern minstrel show character. Worse, his refusal to collaborate with a writing staff means his tv shows and non-Madea/Browns movies are horribly repetitive and so cheap you can actually see extras eating and drinking air...

When you said that Tyler Perry’s writing regressed it reminded me about how he’s so narcissistic that for one of the tv shows he produced, he didn’t like how the writers he hired were writing the show because it didn’t cater enough to his core audience (which I understand to a point, they are his moneymaker) that he fired the whole writing staff and started writing the show himself. So now I believe everything that has the Tyler perry brand is written by him exclusively.

I think the “Medea” phenomenon is a result of relatability. If you’ve had a mom, grandma, or aunt like her, you’re going to appreciate the joke, no matter how broad it may be. To be clear, I don’t have anyone like Medea in my life, so I don’t get it. But I have to imagine that the many people who love these movies do so because it resonates with them on some level, be it personal or cultural.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Honestly, the only way I can even "watch" any Madea or Tyler Perry movie; aside from Gone Girl but he was just a supporting character and it was directed by David Fincher and based on a great book; is through Cinema Snob reviews or Midnight Screenings reviews which I've learned that really the most hilarious; and I use that lightly; movies Tyler Perry makes are his dramas because holy god he may give Telenovela's and Japanese/Korean soap operas a run for their money in terms of batshit insanity Also, when the time comes for you to look at the 365 Days "trilogy"; if you can even call them movies; then I wish you the best because while that was inspired by the 50 Shades trilogy at least there was some "effort" into making them into movies while the 365 Days trilogy....yeah if you've seen the Cinema Snob's episodes or especially Amanda the Jedi's reviews these are far worse than the 50 Shades trilogy

3:50 that’s the one movie with Madea that I genuinely really like and think that it’s actually a really good film honestly

Madea outlived her usefulness years ago. It was funny at first, but the movies just became more outrageous and overblown as the years went by.
