You're free to use any light you choose in whatever way you want. His scene in his head probably intended the character to be seated in a warmly lit indoors environment, perhaps in the night time. If he had wanted to clearly state - through his style choice - that the scene takes place during the day, he would have shown that instead.

I found myself humming the music in the background after I watched the video. Any chance you are thinking of releasing some of the tracks you write for DSLR Guide? Also, you mentioned in the video that very flat colour profiles aren't very good for DSLRs like yours. I've got a Nikon D5100, which was the direct competitor to the 600D at the time of it's release. I've been using the flattest profile I could find for my camera, and I've been frustrated by how my camera can't seem to produce video with a lot of sharpness or colour accuracy, even after grading and sharpening. This may be due to my image profile, but I'm not sure. What can I look for in a profile that can maximize the quality of the images that come out of my camera? Love your videos, by the way. They've been invaluable to me for learning about filmmaking!
@DSLRguide8 жыл бұрын
+sensi277 haha maybe one day! to be honest with you the difference between colour profiles are quite small, if you're looking for sharpness & colour accuracy it's probably your lighting that needs some work. That's really the best way to maximise the image quality :)

@JodyBruchon6 жыл бұрын
This video is excellent. I'm pleased to see that you didn't advocate using CineStyle (it's not even supposed to be used by normal humans!) but I should mention that shooting flat in ANY way on a camera with 8-bit color channel output files (pretty much every DSLR or camcorder that exists under $2000) will damage your color quality while only giving you between 1/2 and 1 stop of extra dynamic range. It's not usually worth it. The absolute best advice is to start with a standard or neutral color profile at default settings, take test footage similar to what will be shot, grade and edit that footage to see how it looks, and only try different settings if the results are not right in some way AFTER doing what you can with lighting, composition, etc. to block or avoid the problematic bits. Shooting flat discards some information to allocate that space to other information and since you're basically guaranteed to be shooting with the goal of grading the flat image back to the way the standard image looked "but with better dynamic range" you're throwing out data then throwing out the expansion of the other data, so you've technically increased your total dynamic range while killing your dynamic *resolution.* A simplified way to explain what that means is this: instead of the final product's colors counting the range 16-235 as 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 it might be more like 16, 18, 20 with what used to be 17 or 19 rounded off. Push the exposure of any or all color channels up by a stop and the gap goes from 1 to 2 values in size for that channel; this is how you get a broken-up histogram/RGB parade and blotchy patches of featureless and noticeably incorrect color where a smooth gradient is supposed to be. What's really telling is that after you graded the flat footage, it looked just like the standard footage would have with the exposure dropped, but your face has a lot of color banding and generally looks worse. Go back and compare the standard footage to the graded flat footage; click between them as needed and the banding issues start to become obvious.

@DSLRguide8 жыл бұрын
Jigesh Sarjaka it all depends on your budget, but if you can afford a DSLR then I'd recommend spending the extra $10 for vision color. I prefer the results compared to cinestyle about 70% of the time. If i'm lighting the scene, I always shoot vision color, but if it's a high contrast environment (eg sunny day outside) then cinestyle is usually better.

At 100iso you lose stops on the black information. It's outside of the native iso of the camera. And as a side note dynamic range is different for each camera. It just depends on the stops the camera can do. Like the mini has much more than a DSLR. So it can get information from a low lighted subject and a high light subject in the same frame.
