So I wanted to do something a little more in depth than the standard 1 light setup video - there's a lot to think about when lighting and that doesn't change when you're only using 1 light! Hopefully this video helps with the process of thinking about why you would put a light in a certain place, what it's supposed to be representing, and how you can use natural light and other tools to back up your single light.

I love how you look like a badass but sound like a scholar, and how the VO over a silent model separates you into these two different characters. It’s quite fascinating haha! Definitely a defining characteristic of your content. I imagine it would be a bit confusing for people if you decided to suddenly do a monologue to camera in a future video lol. Of course, this is me assuming that you do in fact film yourself, but it could also be an actor because to be honest the audience hasn’t been given a clue either way, ha!

I'm glad you're finding them interesting and not horrendous, when you see things like that beauty of a job with the gel and reflector in the garden haha! ;) For the cucoloris, it was just a case of making a wooden frame, cutting some random shapes out of some thick black card, then stapling the black card to the frame :)

@@RobEllisCinematographer I can most definitely appreciate these videos, one of the things that drove me into gaffer work is the incredible outcomes you get with lighting using sometimes the craziest and odd-looking of rigs. For the card, did you do both sides with black card or did you do one side black and the other white so you could use the cookaloris to give a slight bounce if needed?

@@zeewhitewolf Absolutely! And sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do - as long as you're not putting anyone in danger! Both sides black, as that's just the type of card I happened to pick up. But one side black and the other white is a good idea for versatility!

Hi Rob, great content! This is a detail, but I believe that distance doesn't determine the length of the shadow. I think it's the angle relative to the subject. So, for longer shadows the light must be lower (and closer to the ground in the yard example)

Great video as always (coming from a person who learned about your channel 5 hours ago and watched half of the content already). One caveat, though, is that in 5:30 I don't think the shadow length is affected by the distance, it's just an angle of the lamp relative to the angle of the sun, isn't it? It's true that sun rays may be treated as parallel due to distance, but if that affects the shadow length then you should be able to match the shadow length by placing the lamp slightly lower I guess. Anyway, keep up the great work, Rob! :)

Hi Rob, I'd like to ask you for a recommendation. If you were me starting out in cinematography and you had let's say £500 budget to spend just on lighting equipment, how would you recommend spending it? That would have to include stands and modifiers as well.

Buy a single point light with as much output you can afford. Godox are great value. A small pocket light like the F1 for fill or hair light. Then buy 3-4 light stands and a shower curtain. A large 5 in 1 reflector and you can do 90% of what you will ever need.

I recently bought a godox VL-150 and I am looking for a good stand, and neewer has a model for 110 euros, but other brands as avenger, for example, has the same products much expensive (as least in amazon) and they look very similar... should I spend more money on a good one or you are just paying the brand???

Thanks Diego! :) I'm using a Pixapro UK brand C-stand here, which is also a bit costly compared to cheaper brands - but I would absolutely recommend spending a little more on C-stands and going for something like Avenger, as a good C-stand will last you years and be far more reliable than a cheap one!

Thanks so much Álex! :) That's a tough one, especially if you shoot on a budget a lot like me - generally it's just a case of trying to plan around bad weather. Happy to throw up plastic bags on lighting when it's lighter rain, but I don't think I'd trust that sort of thing in heavier rain!

Haha because it's a half naked figure - one of my previous uploads (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHvUmKZ9edCHopI) got restricted monetization, and the only possible reason I could think of for why, was that it featured the lamp. I guess the algorithm saw boobs and said nah 😂 so just preventing it from happening again, ridiculous that I have to do that, I know!

I use the BMCC 2.5k and the BMMCC 1080p - I've not stopped using them, but I've been using the S5 for my latest videos because it's great! Especially when paired with the Ninja V! Filming yourself can also be quite difficult and it's lovely being able to crop in without losing quality when I need to :)

I do! :D Not a massive amount, but a lot of my videos feature lighting that has been sent to me - I just try to blend it in to the video and not make tooooo much of a point of it - I try to get that balance between showing the light and having actual educational content, rather than just tech specs! :)
