I'm not sure if it was a conscious decision or not, but either way, I greatly appreciate the diversity represented in your videos. In a previous video, you featured the book Women Street Photographers (which I ended up buying bc of your video) and in this one, you're highlighting not only another female photographer, but an artist of intersectional, hispanic identity. But I also love how you don't fixate on these aspects as being definitive of each artist's work, and ask great questions that talk about displacement or otherness in the context of creating great art, and it's not lost of anyone that you've linked Paola's style to the lineage of archetypal photographers like Walker Evans and Vivian Maier who are perhaps examples of an older, more homogenous idea of what a street photographer looks like. The insight into historical references of street photography are also very educational, and display a deep understanding of the spectrum of street photography's stylistic and visual language. Thanks so much for these very illuminating and thoughtful "essays"!

Love her work!! Great video and interview. I find it interesting that she wants to move on to video next. Filmmaking and photography can be similar, but very different. Personally, after 6 years of working on films I didn't enjoy it as much. The logistics and problems that go into film is crazy. I always found photo more fun and liberating.

Very nice interview ! I've discovered Paola early in my "Instagram's life" when I jump into Street Photography ! What an daily inspiration even if I don't do cinematic style at all. I really like the way you both see the genre with no rules. Rude photographers making rules of a genre forgot what's art, and it's good to hear you talking openly ! Saul Leiter used telephotos For a long time. Beautiful stuff came from him due to those focal lengths. One of the best.

Inspiring choice of guest Shane. Paula's obviously worked hard on her artistic identity. The aesthetics of her images just add to the romance within the frame she captures. Nice move on bringing Paola to Framelines for an interview. I love her work, she has a very cool style of photography, which is easy to fall in love with. Also nice that you mentioned the paper of the book, that‘s something I especally love about her book. I legit thought the first picture was a real picture that could be removed. Not gonna lie, I only have three hardcover photobooks in my collection, guess who they are? thanks man - I'm loving the BMPCC so far. There's a huge difference between a cine camera like this and a hybrid. The screen alone is 2x as big. Will definitely talk about it a bit more more in future eps

MAD RESPECT for mentioning the "old timer" street photographers! I'm brand new to this genre and am VERY excited to look up these photographers and their work for inspiration and ideas. So thank you for that! Also loved the interview with Ms. Frankie, but I wish she would have made mention of the other type of gear she uses (if U would, please, respond: do U know what gear she uses, & would mind sharing that info? That would be great!) I know that the gear is not what makes the photo, but as a novice to street photography it would help give me ideas of what a great photographer uses and help me build a kit. I know the “rules” of street photography and break them whenever I get the notion. I can and do use my 100-400 telephoto lens with a 1.4 teleconverter and don’t concern myself with the opinion of “real” street photographers on which is the right lens. Nice interview with Paola, and as mentioned here she is a huge talent! I can totally relate to that a 85mm prime works nicely for street photography, and I myself never thought it would be as I initially bought one for portrait photography only, as I mainly shoot with 28mm on the streets. But when I was in Japan and also in Vietnam just before the Pandemic 2019, I actually found that the 85mm worked great combined with the 28mm for this style of photography.

85 is manageable if you're used to 50mm. Sometimes I go from 28mm to 85mm in the same day and it can give me a headache though

@@frame-lines Yes, that I think is most common as it is pretty big step between 28mm and 85mm. I'm probably representing the minority as I never came to terms with the 50mm focal length for my style of shooting.

I really enjoyed this interview and Paola’s opinions should be written in stone. There’s no rules or limits to a Documentary - do what makes you happy, document what YOU consider important. Not everybody will like it, and that is perfectly fine, as long as YOU like it (well, unless you’re a wedding photographer or so :D )…and her book is a beautiful piece of work. Have my christmas gift from my girfriend to me sorted out for her :D

A great interview! Paola's photos are stunning! Long lenses are fine. I mostly use a 50mm, on occasions have done images with 135mm! I hate those doing "voyeur: from a distance. One needs to be close and available to answer.. very seldom. Offer free images on internet and nobody ever asked! Love her color..

How I don't like labels and rules...overall when it comes to art, to make a creative act. I admit, as Paola told, I was really influenced by people around me on what is the right "tool"...no APSC, just FF, no this lens just that, you should have f/1.0 so you can make already an x-ray scan...etc etc...at the end of the day, one has to feel comfortable with his or her vision...

It's a good book but I do think some photos could be way stronger with better composition. It feels that sometimes the framing is not at its best. Colors and cinematic feeling is great though.

Do you know if the street photographer, Monaris, gets the subjects permission to print their clearly identifiable portraits? I was informed unless the subject grants documented permission to print their images, especially for profit, a photographer can run into potential legal problem.

No. You have no expectation of privacy in a public setting. You are the owner of the pictures and can do whatever you want with them no matter what.
