Thanks Nathan. I have just purchased the whole CS range of Instruments and your video was most helpful.

I think that its time to make part two of this. This time about working with latency and latency issues epecially in CSS. Try and test some ways and methods check wich one are the best/. Im more than sure that it could be incredible helpfull for many people. ;)

That’s exactly what I’m looking for atm. Would absolutely love to see a guide/recommendation as to what solution is the most effective. I want to be able to quantize the advanced legato on CSS to the grid.. sadly it seems to be quite tedious to accomplish

Great video! I didn't know about the Kontakt routing option. Seems like you could make some very interesting sounds like that

Absolutely! It can provide more mixing options, for instance.

Did you ever do a video discussing runs? What's the best way to set that up: velocity, sample, etc.?

Only a very quick CSW comparison video for the strings, here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpCyfX1ogJZjja8 - Plus, I remember a video for OT Ark 5 playable runs, but that's a different product. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaq6oph_jpuGr7s I'll add runs to my list of CSW / CSS video ideas, thanks!

could you do a short tutorial or if you know nay good tutorial how to setup cc2 vibrato control cause i cant seem to make it work in studio one ... thank you :) greate tips though

There are many ways! In S1, in the Edit screen (piano roll) click the 3 dots ... to the left of the row of modulation controls (like modulation and velocity and Sound Variations). This brings up a long list of controls. Scroll down to Breath Controller(MSB) which is CC2 and double click it to pick it from the list on the right and add it to the list on the left. This is going to add automation to your clips. If you prefer adding it to the track, right click and show automation on the channel (main window). Make sure the channel is tall enough to see all possible controls. Chances are there will be a drop down called Display: Off with a drop down icon. Choose from that drop down Add / Remove... and repeat the steps to add the Breath Controller(MSB) CC2. Another way is to change CSW to use whatever you can easily send instead of CC2. If you have a controller that sends on a different CC such as 03 instead of on 02, click the gear icon in the upper right of CSW and choose 03 from the drop down for Vibrato control. Simply record a simple up and down movement and it will automagically get added to your clip's automation controls (in the Edit view). There's also an Auto Read/ Write drop down in the instrument Window (that is holding Kontakt) just under the power on/off button. It can be used to add automation in the same way. Finally you can add macros in S1. Click the Gear in the upper left of the instrument window in S1 (holding Kontakt but not Kontakt itself) to reveal some new stuff over on the left near the top of the enclosing window. Controls can be added to anything that has been recently touched or moused over but I find this is the least intuitive way to change vibrato - it might come in handy for something else someday. I guess that is a lot ... so maybe a video tutorial would be a good idea. Let me know if you still have questions!

Hi Nathan, I notced with the cool Divisi trick, you actually lose the two lowest semitones of the instrument's range. How can one fix this? Maybe instead detuning -2 and transpose +2? This way you lose 2 semitones from the top of the instruments range but since you're doing this on the voice which is probably adding lower harmonies to the main voice, it shouldn't be a problem. Thoughts?
@NathanDavidCarltonSoundbed3 жыл бұрын
Generally I like to tune up in software. Because it removes samples to pitch something up. This sounds more natural. Whereas pitch shifting down interpolates samples in between to stretch the recording and “create” lower frequencies. That’s why pitching down is better for a special effect and can sound more unnatural; it’s more difficult for software to insert samples over time. If it were video it would be like duplicating frames of a movie to slow it down or trying to in-between render images that might have happened. But you’re right about those bottom notes, if both voices need to play in unison at some point, in the lowest part of their range.

Hey Nathan, Thank you for this video. May I ask a question. I am using CSS. In terms of Advanced Legato, I have created a logical editor preset which I have seen in Dirk Ehlert's channel. However, still, I don't feel comfortable. I can only use the legato technique with step recording + logical editor preset. Is there a way that I can decrease programming time on advanced legato? Thank you!
@NathanDavidCarltonSoundbed4 жыл бұрын
There are a couple approaches to playing in live and having the notes sound “on time” with different speeds of legato transitions. Some people practice playing early. I prefer using a midi keyboard with a velocity curve that biases the higher velocities. This means I trigger the faster legato transitions. I also follow the advice from Alex W. (The creator of CSS) and enter notes in Standard mode (not Advanced). Because my music is usually highly rhythmic and timing is important to me I tend to quantize the live performance and use a tempo map for rubato. Then it’s a matter of manually adjusting velocities when I want slower transitions (but not the step editor). And a tool like the Logical Editor should help move the notes with the given velocities early, right? (I don’t use Cubase to try it myself.) I also have another video on the legato speeds; maybe you already saw it. Let me know if this answer doesn’t help improve your workflow.

Is there a way to change articulations with a cc command instead of a keyswitch?
@NathanDavidCarltonSoundbed2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that section begins at about 3 minutes into this video.
@cachelesssociety5187 Жыл бұрын
For me in FL Studio the keyswitch to turn legato on and off was sticking - even if I drew in the right velocity it doesn't always change. I'm not back where I can check but I requested help to support and didn't hear back.

What's cc2? And how can i automate it ?
@NathanDavidCarltonSoundbed3 жыл бұрын
CC2 is "breath" ... automating it depends on your DAW. Inside the computer it works similar to mod wheel. If you can find your automation "lanes" for modulation like the mod wheel, you might be able to create a lane for CC2 and draw in some changes. Or, if you have a knob or fader on your MIDI controller you could try mapping it to send information on CC2 in the MIDI protocol. Here's a chart: www.presetpatch.com/midi-cc-list.aspx
