The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British Empire and the French Third Republic against the German Empire. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the river Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the Allies. More than three million men fought in the battle, of whom one million were either wounded or killed, making it one of the deadliest battles in all of human history.

This one was a nightmarish bloodbath. On the first day only the 36th Ulster division completed their objectives but suffered heavy casualties alongside the others. I have seen footage taken that day, it's silence is eerie knowing what was happening and the explosion of the Hawthorne mine is chillingly iconic.

Something that should probably mentioned is the fact that bombardments durring the first attack is the fact that the creeping barrages out paced them hency why the germans caught them in the open.

For future videos regarding historical battles, you should do the Battle of Watling Street (61 C.E.), the Battle of Silva Litana (216 B.C.E.), and the Battle of the Lycus (66 B.C.E.) for Rome II, and the Siege of Milan (452 C.E.), the Battle of Cartagena (461 C.E.), and the Battle of Vicus Helena (448 C.E.) for Attila. In regards to non-historical battles, you should do Tylis vs. Lusitani, Saba vs. Galatia, and Armenia vs. Colchis for Rome II, and Burgundians vs. Jutes, Sclavenians vs. Alans, and Garamantians vs. Ebdanians for Attila. My grandfather won the MM there. He never spoke of what he saw there or at Epres where he won the DCM. Hague deserved the nick name of the butcher.

People higher up than Haig ordered him to do it, and he had to follow orders. And how was he to know that so many artillery shells did not explode. All sides made major mistakes as it was the first modern war.

Haig was just another incompetent British general in WW1. It was no coincidence that the allied successes ultimately came from the Australian general John Monash. By far the best allied general of the war.
