What are your favorite ways to use moonlight? Kickers, fills, something else? Let us know! Also, do you have any favorite night shots from films? I love the moonlit beach scene from Moonlight (2016), the way the darkness and moon play together is one of the most beautiful moments on film I’ve ever seen. #Cinematography #CinematicLighting #CinematicNightLighting

5:09 Will you do a video dedicated to flags? I feel like a lot of youtubers don’t emphasize this enough.

Great video, super informative and the addition of overheads was a really nice touch.

Thanks man! I'm glad you liked the overheads because they are a bit more work but I think worth it

Love your tutorials, and honestly I live for those "Hello" intros; but that teal light does not say "moonlight" to me. It feels like the kind of gritty, sickly light you get from a green-cast fluoro tube. Grading it less saturated and pushing it to a more neutral blue might help. But unless it's very directional light from a full moon, moonlight is unlikely to compete with the practical room lights, as it does here. Regardless, it's a very cool look, and I really liked your explanations for the framing and the light motivation.

Thanks mate! I appreciate the feedback, thats a very good point. I definitely should have dialed it back some taking another look at it but glad you got some other useful information from it. As far as the directionality goes I went back and forth a ton on the look so I'll definitely keep this in mind in the future. Also, I just want to say I love comments like yours - I don't think we can grow as cinematographers or artists without good constructive criticism so this is perfect. Not mean at all, just straight to the point and kind. Thank you again man.

Fantastic video, shooting a night interior scene soon and will definitely keep a lot of this in mind and use some of the techniques! Lighting the ground to appear like moonlight reflecting is great pointer.

Awesome 👍, actually I am curious to know how did you lot the living room, in the beginning of the video especially you spoke about lighting from bottom, which I think is the secret sauce of creating night scenes

Good Tutorial 👍. I'm on very low budget for night shoots I used 2 200w tungsten bulbs 💡 both on key and fill side with umbrellas (total 4 lights) and back light/moonlight motivation was godox led panel small one 5600k . White balanced to 3300k , graded it in post turned out good

Thank you sooooo much for explaining the purpose of the flags at the end. I was expecting exactly that, but was already going back and forth in the video to find out; before I finished watching it. 😀 I am a hobbyist film maker only, trying to set up a night scene. I have the look completely set up own my mind, but have not yet achieved it. We will give it another try today though... Thank you! Oh, one more question; what ISO setting did you use for this? 1250, 3200? With my last try I used 400 to retrieve more information in the shadows but that was creating awful horizontal noise pattern lines. 😞So better using ISO1200 and darken it in post?

I just got teh blackmagic 6kG2 and I am new to blackmagic comong from sony, when i tried to test them, i seem to get a lot of noise when filming indoors in dark places even when the subject is lit well, not sharp at all and very grainy. why is that?
@JacobVossFilms2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, could be a faulty sensor but an important note is the Blackmagic cameras are not known for their lowlight abilities. While they are not by anymeans bad, they are also not amazing in low light

I want to use the Nanlite fs 300 as a sun for interior setups. My iso is 1600. Do you think I can? The room measures 4 meters. Nice video.
@JacobVossFilms3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you totally could - all of this was shot at iso 400. It depends on how wide you go with the shot but I don't think you should have an issue

@@JacobVossFilms Wait. Last question. From your experience. What light have more output the Nanlite fs 300 or Amaran 200D?
@JacobVossFilms3 жыл бұрын
So I had both side by side and I think the FS300 puts out slightly more but it's a pretty even tossup. I like the yoke way better on the FS300 but the Amaran is passable and doesn't slip. Also I like the COB quality way more on the amaran. Can't really go wrong either way but the tipping point for me is that the 200D links up to Sidius Link so I can program it to do different stuff and change intensity from my phone. I'd lean to the 200D if I had the choice.
