There are no accidents in animation. In live action, maybe the light falls in a way that is beautifully unexpected, or the wind picks up just as the hero strikes his final pose. Maybe a cloud parts, revealing the sun during the climax of your action scene on the last shot of the day. Or perhaps a shooting location has a waterfall that you didn't even know was there, and then the scene is changed to feature it in the background. None of these things can happen in animation. every stick, every blade of grass every fleck of snow, ever beam of sunlight, every wisp of wind- everything must be planned, designed, and developed 'just so'. In live action you might get lucky as hell, and land your dream casting for your lead-- but in animation, you have to land your entire dream team to pull off a compelling performance.

Shawn Pyke well many live Action movies nowadays are done in Studio and greenscreen tv series included . often a camera Team just goes to a Location Films it and then Returns to the Studio and the actor plays his role infront of a Green Screen. afterwards the filmed Location is being added

Cinematography is such an underappreciated aspect of animation, and I wish more anime would pay it some mind.

Cinematography isn't underappreciated in western animation, same with anime, but the cinematography of anime is different in animation in the west.

@@RCAnime nice content bro. can i ask something ? Why people have seen good animation in Anime like have nice shoot or nice frame always not mention director of photogrphy works ? Why they always mention who's key animton or director. Of course we known its colouborative and collective. But we know all staff have jobdesk. What do you think ?

I love the Cinematography in Monogatari series and Nisekoi It's so good, I just love those scenes where a close up character turns around with a single color background or with/without some shapes or just abstract background and they have a different tone of color from time to time and then doing some kind of pose the camera is a bit far away while their eyes are a bit glowing

Enjoyed the video, but asks more questions than it answered for the viewer. Touches on topics briefly, would love to see each flushed out in its own series. Frame, movement, colour, lighting. If these are film essays, this video feels like just a introduction. Suggestion. Would love to see part 2. Examples of cinematography unique to anime.... Is it the play on time and movement? (Ex: redline, looney toons, kill la kill). Internal character discord reflected outside? (Paprika?). Metaphors and symbolism presenting the surreal in anime? Camera movement, or lack thereof is only relative to the freedoms of staging and orchestrating movement in the frame? Is noir or German expressionism better suited for animation with unlimited control over lighting and contrast? Birds eye view in anime vs traditional film, which uses it more effectively? Or has anime simply truly perfected lowbrow cinematography? fan service shots vs music video bootyshots? Enjoying your anime essays, pls continue.

Everyone has a personality, everyone has an ability, everyone has a world. It would do others best to remember that. Everyone is so caught up off of taking other's perceptions, visions, and ideas, they forget about their own contributions. That's also what Cinematography is all about. Your vision, your style,....your sell. Its not good to bite,....you won't last long. For those who don't bite and have their own mix of ideas,...your work shines truly out. Don't forget your own animal type. If you take someone else's vision, you won't get anything else new out of life. Contribute so others can too. If you take someone else's vision, what do you have to contribute? If you take and say you did contribute,...then you lie? You're not better than the original creator because you can't produce like they can. All the original creator will do is prove that it IS them by creating something else. When you challenge the original creator, they'll just prove you wrong because it IS their own style that succeeded in the first place. So focus on yourself and create your own contributes.

My recommendation is actually to try and avoid books about film. I think the best thing to do is to just watch as many movies as you can and read whatever books that appeal to your interests, be it whatever subject (just not books on film). Because film is a visual/audio narrative, and books don't do such a medium justice. There are editorial sites that are great however, giving you snippets of what goes into filmmaking (which are free). Cinephila and Beyond - www.cinephiliabeyond.org/ And watch any video essay you can find on either KZbin or Vimeo; I'd say Every Frame a Painting, kogonada, Kevin B. Lee, and Raccord are great places to start.
