01:47 it could also be that they're cutting off mid-thigh because they want to emphasize the people being cut-off from the earth or ground onto which they walk with their feet. So you could say we're only see the 'skyline' of these people. Interesting analysis. Thanks.

8:50 - you were right, the images of the steam, the woman walking, etc, are there to create a visual parallel of Theo's discussion. Little fact, this technique of alternating the story with non-plot-related footage, in order to underline a specific event or message, was invented by D.W. Griffith and made famous by Sergeij M. Eiseinstein in the movie "Strike": while the russian soldiers shoot the unarmed civilians, Eisenstein cross-cuts to the slaughtering of a cow, to show us the savagery of the situation.

keep going on your dream, I remember on the pre-internet era, watching a lot of hell of movies to understand the concept of "cinematography" and since I come from a very poor country, the idea of becoming a director seemed absurd. I wish I had a guy like this explaining this concepts and ideas back then, I would have really liked to folllow with my dream.

I want to make my own video analysis about movies, but I don't know what to do to not having copyright problems. Can you help me? I'm new of there's things (especially youtube). Mostra meno RISPONDI

please can you do a tutorial for cinematography or making a movie in small locations, my room is small and i am trying to use it in a feature length film, i av seen cinefix top 10 movies shot in one room but none of them really match up with what i want, my location is small and i really want to handle the blocking so that there are gonna be a lots of movements to make the scene active and professional, the type of lenses to use and all that... everything that would help me shoot in a small room and still look professional

Check out Darious' short film "Seafood Tester" (later renamed "Unsound" but the original video still has the old name); it makes excellent use of a small space; I think he even repainted his apartment walls to make it more visually interesting. Definitely recommended viewing.

8:15 "You rarely every see zooms in filmmaking. So here, they're punctuating an uncommon argument in an uncommon way." See, THIS is the problem I have with this kind of film analysis. You have NO way of knowing that was the director's intention. Maybe they didn't do a push in, and later in the edit they used a digital zoom instead, because that's all they had. Or maybe the director just had it in his head as a zoom. To say "zooms are uncommon; the argument is uncommon" is just seeing signal in the noise.
