Before Stanley Kubrick began directing movies, he was a professional photographer for Look Magazine. His photos show his keen eye for composition and storytelling. Kubrick had once said that it was his experience as a photographer that often helped him as a filmmaker, so let’s take a look at Kubrick’s career in photography...

A street photographer’s main skills has gotta be observation and analysis. You’re roaming around the environment and look for scenes to capture in a frame at a particular time. It’s creating order out of chaos. Kubrick had great vision and reaction.

I'd never seen Kubrick's still work, I'm damned impressed, he was really good. No wonder 'Look' hired him at such a young age.

Hey, I'm building a site to discover the creative influences of famous film makers, Kubrick is one of them. Tell me what do you think! Site is: www.filmfluence.com/directors/stanley-kubrick/

Reminds me how difficult it is now to publish truly unique work. Everybody has a camera. Everybody has an instagram (or any other picture sharing site). Many take good pictures (mood, colors, compostition, etc). But few do actually stand out. Although he was talented, Kubrick really benefited from living in an era where pictures were fewer and mattered more. I don't I am trying to make a point, but I'm probably sharing that because I find it discouraging as a young artist.

I wonder if we are headed further toward an era of niche communities. It's harder to make it really big, but it's almost nicer to have an intimate (yet stronger) community or fanbase that can support your work. It also allows the artist to keep from becoming too broad in order to reach a larger number of people.

CinemaTyler I agree, having a mass appeal has never been so accessible yet so unattainable. If that makes sense... Another 21st century paradox.

The real problem with Instagram culture is not that everyone has a camera, it's that companies are often looking for trends. They want something familiar, not something unique, because that's what will benefit their business.

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the work you do. Stanley Kubrick is on my list of three fantasy dinner guests, which also includes Carl Sagan and Richard Feynman. I became obsessed with Kubrick’s films before I even knew who Kubrick was. I was 13 the first time I saw A Clockwork Orange. Something about it drew me to it. I owned the Shining on VHS and always loved it. I rented 2001 on a whim one day and watched it five times in three days. Two thing all of these films had in common: 1) For some reason I could never look away. 2) These were the first films I had ever seen, that I knew that the filmmaker wanted ME to think. It was years later, watching Full Metal Jacket for the tenth time...theres that name again, Stanley Kubrick, that I put it together that he directed all of these amazing movies. I started finding out what other films he made, and sought those out too. I remember driving an hour to rent a copy of Barry Lyndon. In college I wrote a term paper on Kubrick’s films focussing on recurring themes in his movies. This is when I took the time to see them all. Shortly after this, Eyes Wide Shut was released, and then he died. I credit Kubrick’s art, for getting me into movies and film analysis. I credit Kubrick’s art for my interest in photography. I credit Kubrick’s art for my interest in both classical and electronic music. Today, I’m a physician by day. However, my passions in life are photography, electronic music making, painting, and astronomy. I was coming of age, and this man literally seemed to open up my brain, and showed me the importance of, and impact that art could have on a person. How one could express themselves and convey a message through images and sound. To me, there simply is no other. Academy Awards mean nothing, because he should have won a dozen of them. There is no other artist, IMO, who was as good at anything, as Kubrick was at filmmaking. Keep the content coming. I like plenty of films and directors, but nothing compares to a Kubrick film. Every time one plays locally on the big screen, I go and see it, again. Its Halloween tomorrow, so I’ll be seeing the Shining this week at a local theater.

Without knowing who the photographer was, I used his image of people on 53rd St line escalators as my channel header. You made a fascinating video. In my early years of shooting Kodachrome each click of the shutter cost the equal of half a slice of pizza, forcing you to really have a reason to shoot a scene.

have you ever considered doing a vid on Kubricks unfinished work? Theres a doc on Wartime Lies which was going to have the girl from The Vanishing and they talk about meeting him. Taschen has a whole enormous book on his Napoleon project. Also the multiple iterations of Eyes Wide Shut, like a black and white w Woody Allen, one w Steve Martin. (im sure you know all this) Idk, just a thought, Could be interesting. Keep up the stellar work!

People love to romanticize shooting on film, as if everyone who shoots digital wildly overshoots because it's free. But even Kubrick was overshooting in the 40's to make sure he got what he needed. Those who think every great photographer shows up to a shoot, snaps 50 shots and uses 40 of them are absolutely out of their minds. That is not at all reflective of reality. Even the best of the best take far more than they use - in the 40's and today.

Hmm, tried to figure it out, but couldn't find exact information. Must be out there. Obviously it's a wide angle without or very little barrel distortion. On 35mm (horizontal) film this would have been somewhere around 20mm. Perhaps someone else could step in and pinpoint it.

On the FDR- Newspaper stand pic- It did come out at some point that it was staged. Many of these old classic street photography pics were staged, more than many might like to admit. William Klein's 'kid holding toy gun' photo is a classic example. I don't really judge it, - Do what it takes to get an image that speaks to people. This takes nothing away from Kubrick of course, he is my favorite film director. If anything, Kubrick was able to convince the paper vendor to "act" for the shot. This alone could have been a powerful indicator of the route he would eventually take.
