I always thought Harley’s Marilyn Monroe scene was just a reaction to when every someone would physical harm/abuse her, her brain would go to her “happy place” as a coping mechanism. She had to deal with what the joker did to her somehow.

Another win for me is when Harley gets tranquilized towards the end of the movie, she recovers from it really fast, a subtle homage to the source material - in the comics, Harley, just like the Joker, is either immune or highly resistant to any and all toxins)

Wasn’t that because of poison Ivy giving her an injection though?, it doesn’t make sense in this scenario. Favorite thing about this whole movie: FEMALE GAZE. The actresses are able to be sexy without being over sexualized. The costuming differences between Suicide Squad versus BoP is huge. The focus moved from T and A to the fighting and conversation. As a woman, its NICE to just see a movie with female characters telling a story. And a few funny nods to female issues and relationships. No secondary agenda involved. No women fighting over a dude. They dont hate each other because of a guy or just because. Ect.

Can't even begin to explain how it made me feel seen and humanised rather than objectified an all-girl squad. It's a movie that does so many things so well and didn't make me cringe at over-sexualisation or lines about how women can control men like animals through seduction (soo overdone). 2:00 Those are Montoya's knuckledusters! Also, two things I feel like you missed, personally: first, I liked that Black Mask was both fun to watch and just completely awful. I like complex villains, but between the typical superhero-movie World Domination Tyrants and Former Friends, it was refreshing to have a villain who was just plain terrible, and in a way that felt realistic- a spoiled, entitled, psychopathic manchild. Second, one small detail I loved is that Harley intermittently switches into psychiatrist-mode, like during her interrogation under Sionis when she interrupts him by psychoanalysing his theatrics, and when she randomly tells Helena that revenge "rarely brings the catharsis that we hope for". It's just a nice touch- a reminder that she was someone before the Joker, and is smart and capable independently of him, but without making it feel inorganic. On a more controversial (?) note, I really didn't get the reviews that kept saying it was a man-hating feminist-propaganda movie. Even one of my favourite reviewers said that they felt Black Mask was verging on cartoonishly misogyonistic by the end- but honestly, it never felt heavy-handed to me, and every sexist moment from a male character was a variation of something I've seen or experienced IRL. And it's not like the main characters are flawless- all of them have some "bad" qualities. Harley Quinn is pretty terrible overall (and only becomes "a slightly less terrible person" over the course of the movie), Black Canary willingly works for the villain and refuses to use her abilities for good until her conscience kicks in, Montoya is a capable detective but also a heavy-drinking cowboy cop with Issues, and Huntress is murdering bad people out of revenge, not because they're bad people. This got way too long, but I wasreally happy to hear you saying that there's no "we are women, hear us roar" moment, because that's exactly my response. It's not a feminist-propaganda movie, it's a good movie that features badass female protagonists, who go up against a male villain who is terrible in multiple ways (I mean, his hair-trigger temper and face-slicing gets far more attention than his sexist comments).

Humans are way less likely to like a movie they can't identify with. And of course, men have a harder time identifying with a bunch of girls. Just like how women have a harder time identifying with a movie full of men. The difference is, that most DC and Marvel movies have male characters so all the male fans (which there probably are a lot of when it comes to comics) are suddenly mad because they are not used to watching a movie they can't relate to.

So I loved this movie. As I teenage girl, this movie spoke to me. Especially when Harley gave Canary a hair tie. REALISM. I like that Black mask's misogyny is from entitlement, he thinks he owns everyone. I like that Harley does kill the landlord, instead she gets his motivation because she has got a degree in psychology. I like the frantic pacing, it feels like Harley. I like how when Black mask slapped her, she had a full suckerpunch moment. I love how Huntress is awkward(also her eyeshadow is amazing) because that makes sense for her background. I love how downplayed Montoya's alcoholism is. I understood Cassandra's wanting to be like Harley. And I understood why Canary was hesitant to get involved. I liked how the WOC and the white women both experienced sexism differently. Sure, Harley was treated poorly by the Joker but her close relationship to a powerful white man afforded her some protection. Meanwhile, Canary's relationship to a white man afforded her no real protection. Also, I loved the resolution to everyone's plot, especially the cop's. It would have been easy to give her a huge win, but more realistically, that was stolen from her and she finally saw that the best way to change the system was from the outside. Also also, I noticed how Harley started to dress more like Harley for herself rather than the Joker, who was who she dressed for in Suicide Squad.

Joker and Harley were dating and joker was quite possessive and abusive so it was more of an upside downside sort of thing. Upside, joker protection and downside, no protection against the actual joker himself. Black mask and canary were not romantically Linked what so ever so the only “protection” with mask she at most may have got was the she is one of my things sort of protection if any. Harley was a love interest and a stooge/sidekick and possession while canary was an above average lackey that was pretty to look at who could also kick ass for black mask. This wasn’t a difference between white vs non white sexism. It was beneficial while extremely harmful relationship vs hot female lackey of a sexist male boss

The Joker is clearly mad as a bag of cats, but he is does not meet the legal definition of insanity. The insanity defence is HARD to win - only 1% of legal cases in the US attempt to argue "not guilty by reason of insanity" and less than 50% of those 1% of cases win. The Joker knew where and when he was in reality, he knew what he was doing was wrong, he knew it would hurt people, he knew it would have real-world consequences, and he chose to do it BECAUSE he likes hurting people.

Second of all I don't think it's incriminating to say that you want to hire women in a field dominated by men. There are so many movies that had a mostly male crew behind it, I don't really have to imagine it the other way round. I find it especially not bad in a movie that has many female main characters (which is comic accurate).

Honestly, I love Harley‘s costume choices in this film. In „Suicide Squad“ her costume looked like it was made to look sexy and seductive. In „Birds of Prey“ it looked like Harley just wanted to have fun. Her pigtails aren’t long enough for anyone to grab anymore. Her bags look more like fun then to „seductively surround her face“. Her shirt isn’t strategicly ripped to be sexy. And most important of all: She doesn’t wear a fucking dog collar!!! I got that post from a pinterest post! This wasn’t originally written by me!! @P J Eeh, Wonder Woman is also made with a female gaze (female director), but I think where Birds of Prey feels different is in both the 'vibe' of the story (mythic, a serious story that's about a *GOD* and told from that god's perspective VS a recovering-from-a-breakup crime-romp from the perspective of a certified nutcase) and that Wonder Woman was made with like, the NEED to draw men, to get the buzz and prestige, whereas Birds Of Prey was like, 'if men come, cool, but we don't NEED them to like it', and that difference in vibe is where men feel un-catered to, I guess. WW was made for a gender-neutral audience, BoP was specifically for women.

1. Like if you want to empower have some good movies on this like kll bill or blade 2. If you just want a good movie then black panther Supergirl's batman or captain America will do but will nto be empowered cu it is unrealistic howether like kll bill and blade are empowering. 3. not all dislikers are offencuve eevn if it is a feminist movie lkie for example 4. Not all-female lead movies are feminist or else no film with a male lead would empower anyone in the 80s cus no misady back in the 80s 5. Also Not all dislike are offensive. And just because it is feminist does not mean that it is immune to criticism. Like if you make a female lead movie with a budget of 20$. and people. hate it. it is because it had a lowe bidge, nto becaus it is feminist. For example, Harly quin is a stereotype and Captian marvel is unrealistic Also just because you made a feminist movie does snot mean you are immune to criticism because then everyone who did not vote for Obama and the entire democratis bacty in 2008 and 2012 was offencive. 6. I like this movie. 7. Also female and black empowering movie existed since the 80s and they did into get as much dislike even feminist movies existed back then so it is not the fist female hero movie. They wher two branches empoering movie like llk*** bill and just good movie like Diana or fmeinist movies like mulan. Also when a movie flops they look at people who do not like the studio and people who are offencive and people who watched the movie. 11. Also If just because a high percentage of people are men doe Santo mean the disliker are offencive Mabye most of the audience are men. Does that mean that since most people who not vote for Obama are white. Hence, all disliker are offencive and all his competitor are offencive too. Everyone else even whe whole democratic party is too. Like Manny's reason to dislike her she was exposed to the teseract or was not her in infinity war and Ultron captian marvel is too unrelaistic but some peoepl like unrelistic movie. 12. Also Harley quin is already a feminin steryotype a nurse that doe snot cure patient is a steriotype that women are bad doctor and the evil nurse and the fact that her tuning evil because she could not do stuf on her won and tuning evil and trickery is a elam steryotype or getting made fun and uncomfrtable by a mentally sick person she was warned and wa supposed to cure and yes morally and legally he is not mentally insane but in the movie plot he is so we consider him as that. But I still liked her also people calling people ofencive cus of her clothing is niysmart like many fmale heros and non superos int he 80s do not have revealing clothes like real fans do nto care about that but also guess what ,ongere on panther and Franklin are noir criminals but in the prequal and they are still alive Ando not criminals and people get mad, are they evicneffo*** no they just usually do these thing like Harley usually had this clothing but we may like other non relvealing elamef heros and what about blade volverine or Manny others, I mean just because female most likely have lingerie means it needs to be equal but that does not mean not at all. I mean does that mean all noir villains form the 80s need to be good? Now I personally love Harley non revealing clothes and less her old clothes but like meaning you want Harley in her old clothes does not mean all file superhero need to. 13.

Obviously the reason every homme is against harley quin is because everyone who is not a in a villain** in a villain** movie is bad and it's a Femme Club. Because in loki and other stuff the other people are mauvais people, and it's a femme only squad. And since most people in the movies are hommes therefore most people will be bad guys. However the response of the fans are, well, femmes were mistreated in other movies and complaining is hypocrite even if we think the femmmes being mistreated in other movies where mauvais. Imagine having a minority empowring movie where basically lauthing at france because of colinization or BC old movies where offencive too. Like ebacuse previous movies where mauvais doe snot mean that soignt hat is justified. And yes halrey had previously a relealing costume and some DC heros as well but not all femmes had it however in this movie all the men where villains not because the studio dislike them but because most people in movies ar men and as I said everyone who is not ain the bad side team is a bad person according to the pad person. And volverine and martian hunter and blade had rreveealing costume of costume. So unless you complain about harley and her but not them or the men being mauvais in this movie, You are not radical.

So... he's essentially MCU Tony Stark if Tony Stark was an evil sociopath who somehow became a rich-ass Mob Boss and lived his whole life in the Iron Man suit because he was horribly disfigured which is what I think drove him mad in the first place.

I get upset when I see people call a movie shit because it doesn't live up to their comedic geniuses or their high levels of drama-expertise because many movies these days are actually pretty good if you just sit down and take your time to enjoy them instead of just being so god damn pessimistic all the time. People often call me pessimistic in real life, and while it's true a lot of the time, I take my time to see the good in things instead of seeing one bad thing, then acting like the whole thing is ruined.

This was my favourite movie I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve always connected with Harley in a deep way. The thing that I loved about BoP is the manic energy and how aggressive it feels. The way I described it to my friends is that is if WW, Captain Marvel and BoP were your sisters, and your boyfriend did you wrong, WW and CM would give him a stern talking to or a punch in the nose, but BoP would burning their fucking house down. I can’t be the only woman who is angry and frustrated with the world and this movie told me “hey we see it too”. Montoya having her hard work ignored, the guy feeding Harley drinks until she can’t stand, Black Canary being fetishized by Black Mask... These have all happened in my life or to my friends. Also, the costume design was impeccable. No one fought in high heels, everyone looked like they were real clothes, not a costume. FYI the part when Harley is on skates getting pushed by the car is similar to a popular drill in roller derby called shopping carts, where you pull a line of skaters who are all crouched like that. Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk.

What's wrong with the pfp? That she has black lipstick? Your summary is completely accurate for me and every girl I've seen this movie with. I know guys won't understand - I wish they would though because the feeling you get as a woman seeing this film after experiencing or knowing of the experiences mentioned above really makes you feel seen. Also, the fact that Harley's fashion changed drastically - in Suicide Squad she wore booty shorts and heels and a shirt that read "Daddy's Little Monster". In BoP she's wearing rainbows and sequins and comfortable shoes - loud clothing that's not intended to please anyone but herself. Every girl I saw it with picked up on it because we're more aware of it than guys. Again - not an indictment to men who don't see it, just an observation that it's more obvious for women.

I think it's also because the channel focuses on looking for the good in underrated, "bad" (by general consensus), and divisive films. And the Ghibli movies are all quite widely beloved. While I know that he has done all of the Marvel films (partly to reach a wider KZbin audience I'm sure) and Lord of the Rings for example, I think the spirit of the channel is still mostly rooting for underdog movies. I think he will eventually get around to the Ghibli films though, but I think it's not a priority and tons of other people have done it, so it's going to be a while.

I got the point about the title here, I think naming the movie "Birds of Prey" resulted in the biggest misdirection ever took by a studio, and the fun fact is that when you come by the end of the movie you don't even care, because the movie was actually good. Yeah, campy, goofy and Deadpooly(ish), but it worked. EDIT: for the ones who wonders, my comment wasn't a critique, I liked the movie and I though it was brilliant to call the movie Birds of Prey and the fantabolus emancipation of one Harley Quinn, even if calling it the other way around would have been more respectful for the audience that maybe expected more character development for the rest of the crew, please don't get me wrong it's just an opinion

i think what's great about birds of prey and why i (and other women) like it so much while so many guys don't is smth someone else pointed out to me: so many movies are primarily male led, acted, directed, etc. so men are used to seeing themselves represented. the movies are aimed for their gaze whereas a lot of women watching those movies have to adapt their view to see it from a man's perspective to enjoy it more (which is part of why i personally loved birds of prey and frozen 2, which are more female-gaze-oriented, but i don't really like a lot of other movies/going to the theater). however, men aren't used to watching movies that aren't tailor made for their eyes only, and so when they watch birds of prey, they don't like it. ofc, this definitely doesn't apply to everyone, and the person who originally said this didn't think so either, but i do think it explains some of the controversy around birds of prey. sure, it has plot holes and it's not necessarily the perfect movie, but so many other superhero movies have those plot holes and are pardoned bc they're for the male gaze. plot twist: things for people who aren't part of the dominant culture don't have to be perfect, and just like men can enjoy imperfect movies bc they're male-led, women can enjoy imperfect movies bc they're female-led and don't necessarily have to have a better reason so psa for my brother: pls stop nitpicking me when i say i like it, _gabriel_

Idk, blowing him up fits the Vibe of the movie, which is fundamentally "I've had it with these guys thinking they run shit", but it also needed to like, be forceful and a little absurd. If his mask ended up glued to his face with the Current Structure Of The Movie, that would break the flow. It would be anticlimactic. It was just really nice to see the little things that weren't there for "wow look our first gay character!" Yet still made it clear they weren't straight.

It is such an amazing show it is just sad that most men thought it was about man hating when it was never about sexism in the show. It was just about Harley and the gang. The title was also short tho, if they put Harley X Birds of Prey it might have been better.

It is about sexism. But rather... Like many experience it, just like the everyday shit women just have to deal With. Yet.

it was about man hating, the writer made sure that every male character in the movie was presented negatively even though every male led superhero movie ever made always includes female characters in large positive supporting roles. it was like this movie didnt want male audiences to like it.

@@andyrobin7196 Why can't men like a movie where the men aren't praised? Women are forced into a patriarchal society where women have to settle for the "supporting" roles? Just bc you don't like something doesn't mean only your perspective is valid.

I've watched Grave of the Fireflies several times - the first time I drove 50 miles to an independent cinema screening, because that was the only way to see it back then. I'm not sure any other film has the power to break me the way this film can. Subsequent viewings might be even tougher because I know where it is going, and the crushing inevitability of the situation is too much to deal with.

I really love these vids but I gotta say I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t mention Harley using her expertise on multiple characters like, the woman straight up a PhD in psychology , she even says it in the film, it should be def a win showing how while she def is batsh*t she is also really smart and she uses that throughout the movie. Also the soundtrack for this movie is dope. And while I know the general “women power” thing is a little more subtle (than it could be) in this movie the whole “female solidarity” thing is a little more obvious and I for one would have loved to hear about it. The hair tie thing was ONE instance of that but there were so much more, and women so RARELY get a movie that even bothers to have one 30 sec scene like that, heck we rarely get a movie with 2 female characters total. It would have been nice to see those kinds of things .... noticed I guess. Just a female perspective, but overall a good Wins vid, as usual! Much love!

she's an incredibly incompetent psychiatrist though, we saw in suicide squad how she gave a machine gun to her patient cause she thought he was hot and in the comics we saw that she got her degree by sleeping with her professors

A personal win for me is Harley's fantabulous costuming. It looks like she walked into an 80s mall, picked out some cute things, and then blew everything up with a confetti cannon. More like this, please and thank you.
