Bill Skarsgård is in The Crow (2024) this weekend, so why not do a little Brandon Lee The Crow (1994)?! Huh. I…didn't realize until just this very second that they're 30 years apart. That doesn't make me feel old at all! Neat! Anyway here's everything right with The Crow!

Rest in Peace, Brandon Lee. We lost him far too early, and in one of the Behind the Scenes features, he talks about his character's resurrection, and how we should all live our lives to the fullest, because death could strike at any moment.

I just love that every death in the film is thematic. Tin Tin the knife guy gets stabbed, Funboy the Junkie OD's, T-Bird the arsonist explodes, Skank who threw Eric from the window is thrown from a window, Grange who shoots people is shot, Myca who cuts out eyes has her eyes ripped out and Top Dollar who caused all the pain is taken out by having to live through all the pain + is impaled like he did to people with swords. 10/10

More or less. Its not that he din't know that there was an afterlife, Him and his crew are Nihilistic basterds So for them they could do what they did, cause there was Nothing afterwards anyways, so there was no Punishement, no retribution, No consequences for their actions He often quotes verses of the bible, as a "Fuck you God" moment, as a mockery, cause its all dumb anyways. But when he see's Eric, and that he came back from the Dead, he realises that there IS an afterlife, and thus, that there are consequences and Punishement for what he and his buddies did all those years, and he becomes terrified for the 1st time in His Whole Life. Before that you can hear in the tone of his voice that he doesn't care much about dying when he talk to Eric, about what happened. But once he realises, His voice sound afraid, he feels terror. And thats just *chef's kiss*

Something that really made this movie work was Brandon Lee's vulnerability. Any time he's talking to someone, especially in more entertaining moments like the Gasoline line, his eyes and the quaver of his voice communicate that he's fronting to do his job, and only about 2 seconds away from a complete emotional collapse with every breath. He'd prefer to not have risen from the grave at all, but here he is anyway. Just a phenomenal talent.

Slight correction: Top Dollar is absolutely the reason Eric and Shelly were murdered. As he said, "Nothing happens in this town without my say-so." He gave the order to have the building condemned and to send T-Bird's crew to deal with Shelly for speaking out against it. If Top Dollar let Eric have Skank without a fight, he might at most gain a day or so before the Crow led Eric back to him to complete his vengeance.
@blackc1479
@blackc1479 5 ай бұрын
Agreed as far as his culpability. Maybe or maybe not on whether the crow would have led him back. He knew the immediate actors, had those flashbacks when seeing them, but got nothing off top dollar, and the crow didn't react either. I guess it would fall into one of those grey "woo" areas. Yeah, dollar was ultimately responsible for the order, but where would that end? Would the shady actors looking to buy the property also be implicated? The more legit people who later buy the development? Personally, I take it that top dollar wasn't really on his vengence radar till he admitted he was responsible. But unless obarr has explained it, I'm cool w "who knows?"

The Crow isn't really there to bring justice. Just to give Eric's soul peace. Unless Eric wanted to go after TD himself, I don't think the Crow would have pushed him. I think it's poetic that TD probably would have been fine if he hadn't been arrogant enough to taunt Eric and try to interfere with the magic. In the end his own character flaws doomed him.
@TheoRae8289
@TheoRae8289 5 ай бұрын
@@michaelkenner3289 As far as Eric knew, he only needed the immediate gang, so when he got Skank, the power was already starting to wane. He was fatigued where he wasn't before. The unexplained bandaging were examples of him going against his "agreement" with the source of that power, represented by the cut Skull Cowboy, who warns him at the end that he fulfilled the agreement--Eric had no power anyway when he entered the church. When Top Dollar admitted to okaying the attack on the loft, the agreement had been left unfulfilled, granting Eric the chance to pass on those memories. Sorry for the obsessed ramble there.

I wholeheartedly agree. He was just getting started and I believe he would have become a huge household name on the level of say George Clooney or Brad Pitt. I have a bunch of his movies and in each one there are these special little moments where Brandon sort of becomes the character in the moment. It's hard to put into words what I'm talking about but it's like he acts how that character would if the character were a real person in that scene, not just something from a script. He always brought this charm and authenticity to his performances, even in little moments like during the flashback scene when Shelly set the dinner on fire and he calmly walks in, puts out the fire, and simply states "Restaurant". That tiny moment felt 100% real, like a real moment in the life of a real couple in love, and that's all Brandon's performance.

There's a lot of sadness and tragedy behind the story of this film and the comic, but I think my biggest takeaway from it is how therapeutic art is. This film has left a lasting legacy that honors the memories of Brandon and O'Barr's fiancee. It inspired the musicians who made the soundtrack ("The Big Empty" was always my favorite) and countless films that followed. This is why art is so, so important. It's a way to channel the pain of sadness and loss and turn it into something beautiful.

It's not a movie I watch much anymore but it is deeply ingrained in me. Revell's score weaves in and out of the soundtrack, both doing so much heavy lifting. And learning Proyas was so devastated by Lee's death that the movie sat unfinished for a year makes that dedication hurt all the more, especially when you hear about just how dedicated Lee was to the role, how deep he was digging into it, how he wasn't JUST another action star. He could've been huge, completely on his own merits, far outside of his father's shadow. And the effect this movie had on action movies is unmistakable. The Crow to Blade to Matrix pipeline could be explored pretty easily, I think.

He quotes Paradise Lost but only now begins to understand it. I absolutely loved it when Eric laughed maniacally. It was as though he was completely posessed by his mission and it externalized through his Shakespearian, theatrical nature and it is so befitting to that moment. Also, I absolutely loved the fact that you could clearly feel that Brandon was having such an amazing time in the role.

You know, it's funny because you mentioned it, but when you get down to it, John Wick is basically the same concept as The Crow. Two bit villains do some idiotic violence for yuks, only for one of the recipients of that violence to turn out to be a black-clad unstoppable killing machine dead set on delivery unholy vengeance.

It's even crazier when you realize the connections --- Chad Stahelski was Brandon Lee's friend and training partner at the Inosanto Academy martial arts school in S. California where they both trained under Dan Inosanto (Bruce Lee's friend and Godfather to Brandon and Shannon Lee) When Brandon Died, Chad Stahelski filled in as Eric to finish the movie, then Chad Stahelski became the stunt double for Neo and trained Kenau how to fight in the Matrix, which in an interview The Wachowskis said they started writing the movie in 1993, and met Brandon while he was filming The Crow, and he was the inspiration for Neo's character while in the Matrix (original script Neo was a woman in the real world/ Man in The Matrix) and if he hadn't died they would have offered him the role of Neo. Then Stahelski went on to have his big directoral hit with John Wick, staring the man who played Neo. And an interesting fact too is Stahelski does not use live firearms with blanks in his movies and digitally adds muzzle flashes in post production because of what happened to his friend Brandon on the set of The Crow.

CinemaWins does my hyperfixation! Finally. 3:22 : Not only did they write Burn for the movie, its lyrics are based on the comic book! 8:30 : So this moment here is what causes Eric to need the tape we see later in the movie. In the original cut - him helping Darla caused him to begin to loose his powers due to him interfearing with the living world and not just doing his whole Gothic kill mission 8:58: Top Dollar is a minor vilian in the comic and him becoming the main villian is one of the best choices 10:09: A lot of the movies more moody scenes are a result of this, including the CGI run from before. Fun fact Erics becoming the Crow scene is also mostly not Brandon Lee - the shootout at the mid point of the film is mostly test footage, and this film is the reason that John Wick has such good gun safety practices 10:42 Not only do you KNOW you're going to die, but also theres some implication that there IS something afterwards, and for a rapist, murderer and arsonist - it's probably not good. 11:13 A LOT of movies got their icongrophy from The Crow - The Matrix, TDK Trilogy (Jokers makeup too), etc 15:06 All of T-Bones gang suffer deaths that are similar to what they did to Eric and Shelly but also Ironic. Tin Tin gets stabbed, Funboy gets OD'd (As they were clearly on drugs during the attack) T-Bone gets burnt (Leading the burnings), and Skank gets thrown from a window. 15:24 I'm surprised you didnt mention this - but theres a whole Insurance scam subplot going on throughout the story. Top Dollar owns most of the buildings and redevelopments that get burnt down, so he allows them to fall into disrepair, torches them and rebuilds em. He invented Devils night as a cover for a corrupt buisness plan and its so funny to me that Eric just doesnt care so the film doesnt go into it. 15:54 Also Eric thinks his mission is complete as he doesn't know Top Dollar was behind the killings so he's enjoying a moment of life before returning to death. 16:06 Fun fact, if you ever wondered why this scene was so short and abrupt its because its from a scrapped sub plot of the film with a character known as the "Undead Cowboy" who is basically Erics spirit guide. 17:57 So, I can explain. When Eric encounters significant moments from his death/around his death/ he's able to absorb the memories and use them. When he touches Albrecht he experiences Shellys pain of being in surgery - since he can absorb it, it makes sense he can also force others to see it - so he puts all that pain and hurt in Top Dollars head. Thematically and literally forcing him to experience the pain he puts others through. 18:57 So in the original cut this moment is even more heartfelt. Eric is warned if he keeps interfering with the livings lives (In particular Sarah) that he wont be able to go back to being dead and with Shelly, thats why him saving Sarah at the end is such a big moment because he's choosing to save her over eternal rest. So Shelly showing up in the graveyard is even more impactful because its implied she too has come back but to lead him to the land of the dead. 19:17 James O'Barr has gone on record saying it didnt work and just made him feel worse.

Do I really want to watch a 20-minute video of a guy talking about how great a movie The Crow is? Absolutely! This movie introduced me to the goth subculture. Brandon Lee brought so much to this character that many refused to see anyone else but him. The villains in this film are amazingly well-written horrible people. This movie does not shy away from what makes them terrible, by showing the audience the actual actions of these characters WE can see and understand Eric's motives even more. It bothers me in movies when characters say something similar to "Do you know who I am? I've done terrible stuff." In this movie, they show us through Eric's POV what these men did to him and his fiancé. We still see the same group being just as horrible as ever a year later. I love this movie and feel like it still doesn't get enough love. Regardless of whether the new Crow movie will be good or bad, I'm just excited that more people will be interested in seeing the original 1994 version.

The Crow 30 years old! This is still a very solid comic book film Hard to believe that this would sadly be Brandon Lee's final performance at age 28 It was a success making $94 million leading to several sequels even a TV show but none of them have matched the same quality yet it had a strong influence on later comic book films being gritty and dark such as Nolan's Batman It suffered a lot of production issues in the process but still worked The film is excellent in its dark, moody atmosphere, gothic style, an excellent cast, a beautifully composed score, great visual flair mixed with noir, and slick ultraviolent action A very good supporting cast of Tony Todd, Ernie Hudson, and Rochelle Davis Top Dollar makes for a very cool villain Of course the driving force of this is Brandon Lee himself; he perfectly brings this character to life as an anti-hero He's a man who lost the most important thing to him and given a second chance he's confused to what he's become but knows he has a goal to fulfill Buildings burn people die but real love lives forever, the only way for people to live on is for us to never stop loving them It's hard to not get emotionally invested in this persons journey not just the late actor thanks to director Alex Proyas respecting the comic's nihilistic sensibilities as well as the simple storytelling The tragic aura itself only adds to the movie's central morbid appeal and themes This was also heavily influenced by music videos of the zeitgeist 90s era thanks to grunge and alternative As it stands 'The Crow' is a very excellent comic book film that properly captures the essence of its origins and pays tribute to its leading star

Eric's first exchange with Sarah is so iconic that, when I dressed as the character for halloween one year in high school, it started a completely impromptu reenactment of that conversation when I ran into a girl I had a crush on that morning. I'm pretty sure my obsession with that movie is the entire reason I caught the "What are you? Some sort of clown or something?" as a quote and not a time to be defensive of my costume.

The Crow was one of the few graphic novels that hit deep, one that was sensitive, grim, and beautifully sad and I absolutely love this movie for keeping the same tone. Brandon might've not become an Oscar-winning staple for the industry, but he would've been a great actor looking at how much he delivered with this work. 10:42 I think it's more a matter of perspective. Initially T-bird's cocky and likely figures there's no afterlife, so he can be as evil as he wants since there's no consequences after he dies, but after he sees Eric is the one doing this to him and he died in a way that no one could survive, he realizes There is indeed an Afterlife and he's on an express ride to Hell. I find that would make even the most hardened person weep, knowing they are about to die and eternal damnation awaits them.
