And when poor kids grow up in this inner city, and have to walk 5 blocks to school, chances are, they walk through the turf of 2 or 3 different gangs. If they dont have support at home. If they find themselves targeted or bullied by any of these gangs. If they have friends who they trust that are already members. They will probably join. And the hats is a way of signaling your affiliation in a very turbulent city with lots of wolves. And if you arent involved in a gang, it can help you keep a safer distance from people who live that life. So its not stupid. Its vital to know this stuff.
