Thanks a million for presenting the late sportscaster Clem McCarthy narrating the Triple Crown races won by Gallant Fox in 1930. He looked like a good horse back then. He came through in the later part of races, it appeared. Glad I got a peak.

Great horse and great sire! Only triple crown winner to be the father of a other triple crown winner, Omaha! Both horses were trained Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, and Earl Sande was a great jockey too!

I realize you wrote this comment a year ago but I have to ask. Why is Gallant Fox your favorite racehorse? I mean people usually usually go for the more famous of Triple crown winners such as Secretariat, Citation, Affirmed. Secretariat is my favorite but I've taken a liking to Assault just because of his name. But yeah why Gallant Fox?

Was he the first to win the Triple Crown?

Gallant Fox was unquestionably the most gregarious Triple Crown winner. Jim McKay, in the ABC Sports documentary "Jewels of the Triple Crown" (1988, and put up on KZbin), relates the fact that he wouldn't work out unless two or three other horses went with him, and often tried to slow down when he held a sizable lead, so as to let others actually catch up, to reform a herd of sorts. And yet despite all such "self-handicapping", he went on to have the most dominant season since Man O' War ten years earlier. Finally, the term Triple Crown, in the American sense, was actually invented by Charles Hatton to describe Gallant Fox's accomplishment. When Sir Barton won it in 1919, no one realized it.

@@VampireYoshi I commend you on your explanation. I had the prevlidge of visiting Gallant Fox's grave at Claiborne Stud in Paris Kentucky. Seeing his Stone was just as big a thrill, as seeing Secretariat's. They were truly amazing horse's.
