Cintai Tioman

YSD has been supporting conservation work on Tioman Island since 2014 with a total committed sponsorship of just over RM2mil. Our long term partner, Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) and more recent partner Juara Turtle Project (JTP) have been working hard to build ecosystem resilience through initiatives such as coral outplanting, turtle egg collections and hatchery work, beach patrols and cleanups, coral reef maintenance and monitoring, as well as social resilience through environmental education, initiatives towards sustainable living habits such as recycling, and improving livelihoods via creation of job opportunities within the conservation work field. In our current project with RCM, YSD is working towards getting the island accredited as an IUCN Green List site - as recognition of the important conservation efforts on and around the Island.
However, in the recent years - Tioman Island has come under threat from the possibility of the de-gazettement of the Marine Park and parts of PERHILITAN wildlife reserve. If this happens, uncontrolled and unsustainable development may ensue impeding the good conservation work which has been done throughout all these years to the detriment of the Island. In light of these worries, YSD is on a mission to spread awareness on the importance of conservation on the Island, and showcase the beauty and uniqueness of the Island.
