Skid Row in Los Angeles is a place that I always heard about since I was a kid. Its reputation as a homeless campground, where people suffer from complex social and mental health issues, is always glossed over when people think about Hollywood. But for the first time ever, I am going there to take you on an uncensored journey through one of the most notorious and dangerous hoods in the United States of America.
We’ll explore the environment of Skid Row, meet the residents, and dive into the challenges they face daily -- from lack of housing and healthcare to drug addictions.
This video is not just about showing the harsh side of life, but also about sparking conversations on what can be done to bring change.
My main goal in going to Skid Row is to shed light on the human stories behind the headlines and statistics because, at the end of the day, people are just people.
Whether you're familiar with Skid Row or hearing about it for the first time, I hope this video helps you understand the gravity of the situation and the humanity within it.
Huge thank you to Heidi, Dante, and the whole team at Midnight Mission for guiding me around Skid Row to tell this story. Since 1914, they've been doing amazing work to help those in need on the streets of LA. If you'd like to donate, then you can do so on this link: www.midnightmi...
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts in the comments down below. I'll see you in the next video!

I’ve lived in LA my whole life, Skid Row is one of those things that’s become normalized and sadly gotten worse over the years. I’ve learned that city wants this, because it’s easier to control them in a small area then have them spread out. This isn’t an accident it’s by design.
@truther001
@truther001 19 күн бұрын
But they ARE spread out all over LA, LA County and continue to grow, grow, grow. Honestly, I believe that services should only be provided to people who have lived and worked and paid taxes for at least 10 years. Everyone else should be given a bus ticket to wherever they came from and that city or state needs to provide for them.

25 billion dollars spent in 5 years on homelessness... is hardly a blind eye on the issue. This is a business unfortunately along with drugs and war. With 25 billion dollars, I'm sure they could have built a few buildings and supply food and mental health services for the people; but if homelessness goes away.... well... then some people aren't making money. It's sad and I feel for the people going through this and wish them happy and healthy futures.

@@solokom well ideally to help them. 25 billion for 40k people is approximately $500,000k divide that by 5 years. That's more than the average income of someone going to work. So yes. @@sandman5359 it certainly isn't going to the people who need it seems. Another example is in Toronto. The government used to pay hotels to house homeless. Get people jobs, actual help for getting off the streets, Attorney General’s that don’t prosecute homeless as criminals for trying to find a place to sleep, like Kamala Harris put into place when she was AG California… if you want even a chance at saving these people, a majority sadly of whom are in my home State of California. Getting these people into homes will get them back working again. Nobody wants to work while being homeless with nowhere to shower and no lunch money. Reasons I love it: I can help people I can listen to people and have people appreciate me and give me reasons to appreciate my life. Reasons I hate it: people aren’t appreciative of the free things they get they want more and more. People have thrown and almost caused me physical harm. Since being out here in Skid Row, people have asked me “well what causes homelessness?” There’s no answer to that. Of course there can be common themes, but everyone’s story is different, and the circumstances leading them to Skid Row vary- from the woman with a PhD in mathematics, to the family who walked three months from Ecuador to seek a better life for themselves, to the man who was born into homelessness, to those coming out of the justice system after decades being dropped off in a van in Skid Row. My first job out of nursing school was street outreach on skid row. At that time the drugs you’re seeing now weren’t prevalent- it was mostly alcoholics who’d dropped out of society or elderly men living off a small, simple pension. So while the people on skid row in 1996 weren’t as desperate as they are now…many of the same health problems were ones I saw then. I saw so many people in the end stages of alcoholism & it was so hard to hear about where life took them, and how they wound up there. I don’t think I’ll ever forget some of those stories.

As someone who has been a Paramedic for a decade. The homeless are all people just like us. They had one or two speed bumps in life that escalated in a domino effect. We are all one paycheck, one mental health crisis, or one life experience away from being within that population. Please, please respect these people like they are one of us. Look them in the eyes when they say "hi" to you or just smile. The biggest thing they complain to me about is feeling invisible to the rest of the population. I would highly recommend volunteering at a local homeless shelter or any organization that helps this population. I don’t believe that. It sounds good to say but it isn’t true. These folks have burned every bridge they had to get there. They don’t want help. Plenty of services available, nobody wants it. These people will say what people want to hear when asked. The reality is they like to live like that. Zero accountability, zero responsibility. The lady talking about billionaires, and him talking about student loans and higher prices is disingenuous at best. Apples and oranges.

I really loved this one. My mother is from LA and my father ended up in LA at 7 years old when my grandfather took the relocation package offered to Native Americans is the 1940's. LA has obviously changed so much since I was a kid in the 1960's living north of LA but visiting family all the time. I live on Vancouver Island now and homelessness and drug addiction are rampant and a lot come from the cities and though the cities won't admit it I have met many who were given a check and transportation to leave the city and relocate to here. I know because I volunteered at our local Food Bank for a few years and got to know a lot of them. If you want to really help and even get to know some of the homeless volunteering is a great way to do it Volunteering at the Food Bank is the most satisfying things I have ever done.

I live in LA and a lot of these people don’t want help. There are many resources such as government funded programs that help with getting jobs or low income housing, shelters.. food stamps, you name it. The only rule is that you have to try, and also that you must be sober. You heard that man, he doesn’t want a job that needs to be done in a timely manner or responsibility in general.. it gives him “anxiety”. Well news flash, it’s apart of life. Working at a job, having responsibilities is apart of being an adult and carrying your own. There are high rise buildings- luxury living apartments that are going up all around LA for the homeless and low income people… while us middle and lower class work our butts of day in and day out to be able to afford the little amount of space we get. I’m tired of the homeless being so entitled. Get up, get sober and get a job… !

I used to work with the homeless as a social worker in New York. One thing you realize about them is how incredibly resilient they are. They truly know how to survive. But I do wish there was more out there for them when it comes to housing. It isn't enough. Too many people are forced to live on the streets due to their circumstances and it's not right that there isn't more for them.

I visited LA gor the first time last October. I was surprised by the huge difference in wealth inequality there. On one street huge mansions worth milions of dollars and on the next people sleeping on the streets in tents. As someone who isn't from the US, LA is definitely not what you see in the movies. I had such an eerie feeling there the whole time. So much wealth yet so much desparity and suffering in yhe same time.

Thank you for showing people the homeless people are people. I live in LA and even in more affluent areas we have homeless encampments. I live near the VA and many of my unhoused neighbors are vets. I found that most just can't afford a place to live, some have mental health issues and some have drug addiction. They need support and help not shame and to criminalize them. They need access to shower and toilets like the rest of us. Where else in the world are supermarkets locking up soap, detergent, toothpaste, while alcohol is out on the open. In my experience unhoused people are amazingly kind and share with each other whatever they have. It's so easy to help donate food if you want to. I've bought extra food on sale like buy one/get one deals or buy 5 for 5 etc Rather than hoard when things are on sale, keep what you need and donate the rest. Do what you can and be kind.

Can we all just agree it's a whole lot of issues, and most of them are not related to the actual people suffering on the streets. Most, if not all of these people have mental health issues in the first place which they never received support for while they were in a stable place. And then people looking from the outside blame them for not being able to figure out a way out of homelessness when they're in the most vulnerable state. It's really sad that people can be so blind to having any sort of empathy for other humans. Let's just hope trolls like Tomoko don't ever have to face that same reality one day, because they'll probably lack empathy for themselves and would never accept help and end up dead.

@fantasyEXX Playing cards or any other card game(ask your local gamestore if they offer free Starter Magic the Gathering decks, mine does. not the most exciting gameplay, but it's something) tossing a ball around, pull out stuff in your own home you haven't touched in a while and do that. We hooked up the old N64 and played some classic Smash Bros, and all it cost us was the price for the electricity. Do a Google search and see if there are free museums or something in your area, we have a free aquarium. Ask your local library about upcoming events, ours recently started hosting one shot D&D every couple of weeks, and all that requires is showing up and knowing how to write and do basic maths. You can even do that free at home with some paper, pencils and some ~ImAgInAtIoN~. Collect some wood (dump, woods, wherever the hell you can find it) and have a fire and hang out if someone has a safe space to do so. Try urban exploration and check out abandoned buildings. We've been to a stone tower from the 30s, an abandoned airforce base that shut down after the Cold War, campus of an asylum with multiple buildings to check out. Just be careful and learn trespass laws in the state/city. Walk the Freedom Trail in Boston, that's free to do with a bunch of historic sites and stories along the way. Go swimming if you have access to a body of water. Cook dinner together. My favorite, is simply being in the presence of people I care about, no matter what we're doing. Again, this all really depends on what your group considers 'expensive'. What's the limit per person? $0? $10? $50? Changes depending who you ask.

Living as a young (and pretty small shaped women without a car) right off downtown LA/ skidrow, yes it is safe during the day maybe a little gross but these are prominent streets that usually need to be crossed through. Not to mention the many surrounding areas also quite dangerous or scary after hours… all that being said I do not feel fear as much as I feel concern and worry for all these people living on the sidewalks, they are mostly kind and respectful humans who deserve a chance in a differently functioning society, I do not blame them I blame the government and systems in place that have not and are not able to help them before and during their homelessness. I see them everyday befriend the regulars and always pray for hope like Big Russ

Well I’d say these people are pretty obviously suffering the consequences of their decisions. How is that going for everyone? Do we like this outcome? Finally, idk about you, but shit like this obviously isn’t good for our country. Frankly I find it unacceptable. The reality is that there’s an underclass of people in this country that can’t succeed in our system. And those people will fall into hopelessness, which leads to drugs and crime. Me, I’d prefer less drugs, less crime and less vagrancy. Eliminate 90% of the housing/building regulations, expand section 8 and Medicaid dramatically and then, criminalize and enforce open air drug use. 85% of homelessness is transitory and temporary, but high housing costs and lack of housing for low income people makes the scale of the problem worse. So that’s my proposed solution. Just casting people aside, even if that’s probably more fair, is not a solution

@@nextbizzy"Helping poor people" is a very common grift across the world. Don't be fooled.
