I love how like 90% of fairy tales are just some kind of fairy creature saying “hey human, don’t do this one thing” and then the human proceeding to doing that one thing anyways.

There’s a Mermaid Saint in Ireland. She was a human but due to leaving the lid off a well, her village was flooded and everyone drowned, except from her and her dog. She turned into and mermaid and her dog an otter. They lived happily in the new lake for a few centuries till she got tangled up in the fishing nets of some monks. They offer to baptise her regifting her a soul but she would become mortal, where as if she doesn’t get baptised she’ll stay immortal but no soul. She chooses the baptism and the soul, and dies almost instantly. No record is given about the fate of the dog/otter.

Ah Melusine! One of my favorite mythological characters. I think it is interesting that the two tails and its correlations with more ancient female images displaying female genitals has been interpreted as representing the sexual feminine mysteries in the context of seduction and power over men, when it is so clearly a veneration of fertility. It is always stated that Melusine bore many children. I think that her role as a reclaimed ancient fertility symbol is significant here. The whole story starts with a fertile birth of triplets, and continues within the context of a mothers love and rage for her spouse and eventually her children which ends up happening again in this feminine cycle of transformation. I love the many layers of this story. Thanks for this one!

I believe the earliest modern mermaid comes from a king's mirror written in mid 13th century Norway. It describes mermaids as one of the wonders found in the waters around Greenland, with the ability to bring either good or bad luck to a passing ship depending on how she approaches it.

Yeah, here in Brazil we do have 2 main mermaids, Yara, from indigenous roots, as the goddess of Amazon river, and Yemanjá, the mother of seas, brought to us from enslaved africans. They also brought Oxum, the goddess of rivers and sweet water.

Oh I was waiting for this! Your research into the folklore and mythology of all figures and creatures that formed the modern mermaid concept is astounding, thank you so much for such a fascinating journey through the history of this creature. Random information you may find amusing - from what I’ve learned in modern Greek, the words for siren, mermaid, nereid, and nymph all represent different things: - ‘Siren’ still has the same sort of reference to the mythological creature that Odysseus encountered, the bird lady creatures - The word for ‘mermaid’ is the same word as for ‘gorgon’ (Ariel as The Little Gorgon… try marketing that, Disney). A catch-all term for scaly monster ladies, I suppose. - The word for nereid can mean ‘fairy/sprite’, and I’ve heard it used as a term of endearment for a baby girl to describe how cute she is - The word for ‘nymph’ shows up in ecclesiastical writing as a word for ‘bride’ (e.g. Mary mother of Jesus is referred to with this in the paraliturgical chant ‘Agni Parthene’). In fact our modern word for bride is also based on ‘nymph’.

I love this... I have a Mermaid on my Germanic Coat of Arms with flowing hair holding a Mirror and a Comb... Last year I did DMT and had this incredible vision of a beautiful Dragon/Djinn woman... I saw her as a Dragon and thought she was absolutely beautiful and amazing... She indicated to me she could grant me a wish... I thought very hard about it... I said, "If I can have a wish, I wish to marry you." and she got excited and vibrated like a hummingbird... She was like a shadow orb with a tail that made me think of Asian style dragons... She was shapeshifting as well, I saw her in my third eye changing forms that looked like beauitufl anime heroines and faeries... I felt her presence and even had these intense sexual fantasies with her... She's still around me to this day... I was just having intense visions of her lastnight and so I love this video right now... It feels like a synchronicity... My Dragon Queen likes you and admires your intelligence...

Well, interesting topic: it's actually unknown where they originated from and it's still up for debate in academia. Whilst it's largely known in Ireland, the figures only appeared there in the 12th century, and there's more evidence that it existed across Spain and France in the 11th century, and thus isn't Irish in origin. There's a lot of debate around it because it's so renowned in Ireland, but from dating, it would seem, to have come across from France/Spain. There's an excellent paper on it here: www.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:1143857/FULLTEXT01.pdf

the ballad of agnes sounds a lot like the ballad Vodník in Kytice (Bouquet) by Karel Jaromír Erben vodník is a slavic water spirit typically described as a green skinned man with his clothes always dripping wet when out of the water, he drowns people and keeps their souls in cups,, he's also seen as an authority figure over rusalky (s. rusalka) who are feminine often malevolent water spirits who appear as beautiful young women luring mostly men to their demise by drowning

I just finished a book titled," Merpeople a human history, By Vaughn Scribner. It's about how the image of the mermaid , and merman , have changed over time, on certain beliefs, and fears, sexuality. And how the world sees others who don't really fit into " their belief systems. as well as feminisms, and the LGBTQ community all fit in to the merpeople mold. It is a very interesting read. I got the book off of Amazon. I highly recommend it.

The Greek Naiads/Nereids were largely depicted as human, but they were shape shifting spirits. I think that influences a lot of the later stories. Also the Celtic tales of the Merrow may have had wider impact due to the Irish influence in the northern European church from 400-900.

There is a hidden history of pagan ( pre-christian ) origins. Stories of wonderous peoples of spiritual strengths who had interacted with regular humans. Melusine is but, one example of this & ancestor to many a person of royal French & Luxemboug lineages. The Lady of the Lake pertaining to Avalon's history in Breton, was a Davidic Faerie Queen of Avalon, Queen Viviana. Her historic ancestry is quite well documented.
