That is true! Would have been quite difficult to locate without the coordinates though... those wheats were tall!

Small hint - When running a helical and the video starts to get weak, rotate it 90 degrees axially. The reason for this is that not all TX antennas have the same amount of horizontal polarization as vertical and the helical can take advantage of that (depending on the location of the feedpoint). Thus, by rotating about the long axis of the helical, you can pick up some extra signal with the last 1/4 turn on the helical.

One antenna can perform good today and really bad tomorrow. Many factors can change the transmission quality, especially the ones related to the Sun. From time to time, the Sun will provoke radio blackouts in various frequencies, and that will impact RF signal transmissions.

Hey, I've been meaning to... but I haven't gotten around to making that test yet! However, I can tell you that the Triple Feed Patch Array antenna is doing a damn good job... and I doubt the more expensive antennas will do much better to justify the price difference!

Great test. My best is 10km on 5.8ghz 600mw with 7 turn circular wireless helical. Could of pushed further but the battery was near 50%. Mind u that I was tracking it with my head as the helical was mounted to some Fatsharks

Tracking with your head should work fairly OK for the most part, as long as you have a good idea where the plane is, relative to you! :)

Hey man great video, you’ve earned yourself a sub! Would you still recommend doing the 5db antenna mod on the x9d plus or would it be to risky considering all the problems everyone had while doing it?
@ArxangelRC6 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks mate! To be honest... I might have been the first person around to do the antenna mod a few years ago when I broke my stock Taranis antenna... I never posted anything about it... but I've also never had any issues with that mod! I am not sure how people are messing this up! If you don't want to risk it, just get an R9 system (goo.gl/FeJTgK) and you will have all the range you want, while keeping your Taranis stock! :)

@@ArxangelRC Solar radiations and other solar activities affect the total electron content of the ionosphere and also affect various radio frequencies used in telecommunications. Fantastic video, as usual! I wonder if the noise floor is higher in that area later in the day? You were also flying in a different direction, right? Love these puzzles.
@ArxangelRC6 жыл бұрын
Well... thing is I tried the IBCrazy antenna again at the end of the flight, and it still performed well, and we have no observed any notable change in noise floor in that area! I did fly in the direction I usually do my long range tests... so it should be pretty OK. Will test again next week and we will see... I have a wrench handy now, so will tighten them down as well as I can!
@blacksto16 жыл бұрын
very good video, hope you figure out what could cause the bad signal, maybe the vtx reduced the power due to overheat? Anyways, consider testing a Crosshair antenna, we are getting very good results (~7km on 600mw without antena tracker)
@ArxangelRC6 жыл бұрын
Actually I find it doubtful the Vtx would overheat in flight, the way I have mounted it... running at 25mW... and besides... the IBCrazy antenna was OK beginning and end of flight... sooooo... overheating doesn't make sense. I do not have a 5.8Ghz crosshair... as far as I know those a tricky to make... so finding a good one might be a problem. Will see if a friend is willing to give me his to test next time.

6 dB in gain will double your range there are patch antennas with 40dBi of gain! if u use circular pol, make sure you have rhcp and lhcp on the other side
@ArxangelRC2 жыл бұрын
Well 40 dbi would quite directional, very narrow, so you would need a tracker. Would also be quite heavy I would imagine.
@cohental20002 жыл бұрын
@@ArxangelRC If you use GPS track it is very accurate... heavy is less of an issue since it is for the ground station. But maybe I exaggerated 40dB you will need a heavy lift pedestal...

I experienced similar video degradation on some flights and traced it to the pigtail between the vtx and the antenna. Internally damaged.

@yuriidemchyna3527 Жыл бұрын
1 turn helical is maximum for that small reflector. It will give you the best radiation pattern and true 6 dBi of gain, because 6 dBi is 4 times. This means that you will be able to receive only 1/4 of all directions (90 degree sector), compared to an omnidirectional antenna. Don't use a lot of turns with that reflector, because it will not give you the desired gain and will only mess up the radiation pattern: the direction of the main beam can go anywhere and you will not understand what is happening. If you want 12, 8 or 5 turns then you need to have a reflector which has 1-2 meter diameter and a very good conductance. Then you can have 12 dBi, 15 dBi etc. Without a big reflector it is unfeasible to have more gain that 6dBi. Another way is to use a satellite dish with 1-turn helical (insert it in the place of the satelite receiver). But remember that circular polarization changes from left to right and vice versa after the dish.
@ArxangelRC Жыл бұрын
Which antenna are you talking about? Out of all of these only one of the helicals was done by me, and it is the one with the largest reflector! The rest are store bought and supposedly tuned... so they should be working well! The fact is that with the tracker all of these have always performed best dead centre pointed to the plane... so apparently they seem to work OK without a 2 meter diameter reflector!

nice test. still i think best would be to make more of them using aproximately same factors/conditions and average them in the end for an definitive result. my opinion is most of these anntennas not worth price since its so easy diy and you can leans something interesting along the way. back in the days radioamateurs used diy testing gear for antennas and they outperformed most commercial. nice job. cheers.
@ArxangelRC6 жыл бұрын
Well... to make a really good antenna you need some serious gear... other than that its just guesswork to be honest! I've made my own antennas... and only 1 or 2 have actually been good for something because you have no real way of tuning them and testing would require a lot of flights, which is just not practical! The trick is to find somebody who knows what they are doing and have the right gear to tune the antennas! :)

Wonder, what would perform better: the padoga+triple feed patch 9.4db or the linear antenna and aomway double biquad 13db antenna on receiver.
@ArxangelRC6 жыл бұрын
That is still a test that I have to do! Theoretically the linear system should do better for long range out in the open where there are no reflections, etc., but only testing will tell... and it is possible that the results might vary for different locations!
