Straight Nines: Yeah me too...I learned a lot from her...way back when she was teaching us the correct way to fold sheets, pillow cases, and put clean sheets on the bed. Oh! and I almost forgot!!! Tips on how to feed "yer" dog. LOL!! All kidding aside, I loved "Big Martha" and the way she taught how to knead bread, and how Martha would remember about her Mom when Little Martha would make bread, and tell us what her Mom said about bread dough, and the kneading process. It brought a tear to my eye, because I remember watching and listening to my own Mother seventy five years ago when she would be making bread, and telling me how to make it. I made many a batch of my Mom's bread for my own children, but could not ever get it to taste exactly like Mama's did. Now days, I make a couple loaves of Irish soda bread because there's no kneading involved. Oh my, I just realized...all this talk about Mother's...And this is Mother's Day, 2018.

Oh just stop. It is literally called that this bread. They are extra large 18th C style country loafs made for the common masses. Versus more tiny types of breads. It's a European thing. They are very large and would serve workers in fields and such on breaks. You won't find these sorts of loafs at a modern supermarket. It is not a classist thing on Stewart's part.

Martha was really beautiful when she was young. I've had these sandwiches before. Really very good, tasty and yummy. Use a couple large of cans of tomatoes or a brick which needs to be wrapped in paper or "al." foil as the weights.

She is still beautiful. She is aging very well. Her family lives to be very old, so I suppose that's the main factor- hearty genes.

I do something similar, but add provolone rather than mozzarella. Also, we prefer greens from the garden, such as arugula and baby lettuce, rather than basil. The basil can really be overpowering. We happen to love only one spicy type of meat, but do use ham, thinly sliced roast turkey, a little roast beef and everything else as Martha does. Leftover as even better.

Martha's friends aren't stupid --- I wouldn't think any of them would go through the effort of making this elegant of a sandwich for a picnic -- they'd only slap some ham and bologna in between white bread with mustard. Solution -- have Martha make it! It does look quite good though.

She speaks very s-l-o-w-l-y, and I think it's because she is being careful to not let her NJ dialect come through. I say this because I am from New Orleans and when I try hard not to have a New Orleans dialect, I have to speak very slowly in order to be cognizant of how I am pronouncing my words.
