When the sun is high, there’s sometimes a bright band of color in cirrus clouds between the sun and the ground. It’s a circumhorizon or circumhorizontal arc. A circumhorizon arc is a short or medium or sometimes long straight segment. They don’t happen as often as a halo does. From refraction, or the bending of light in ice crystals, the seven colors of the spectrum appear. The colors always line up in the same order, with red on top. You can tell a circumhorizon arc is not a rainbow because rainbows happen in the opposite direction of the sun, while the arc forms beneath the sun.
