5 Unusual rainbows | Amazing Weather

You might have heard of the first unusual rainbow on this list - the double rainbow - but how about a fogbow? Or a full circle rainbow?

Double Rainbows
A traditional rainbow is formed when light reflects through a raindrop into our eyes. In a double rainbow, this sunlight reflects twice, at slightly different angles.
Full circle rainbow
Can be seen when water droplets are present in the sky below your horizon. You are most likely to see one from an aircraft, or on top of a tall building or mountain.
Fog bow
Fog bows demonstrate how the sizes of raindrops produce different intensity of colour. Large raindrops, such as those found in thunderstorms, produce vivid rainbows. Whereas fine droplets found in cloud or fog smear out the colours, producing almost colourless rainbow.
Monochrome rainbows
At sunset and sunrise, rays have further to travel through the lower atmosphere to reach your eyes. Short wavelength blues and greens are scattered more strongly at this time. This leaves the remaining transmitted light richer in reds and yellows.
Fire rainbow
Whilst known as a fire rainbow, this is in fact circumhorizontal arcs, a type of halo. Haloes form when light refracts through ice crystals in clouds at high-altitude.

You forgot to mention that with double rainbows the second rainbows colours are inverted!

Great point Target51 and thanks for the comment - we also decided not to mention in this video that the dark band between the two rainbows, is known as Alexander's band. This is after Alexander of Aphrodisias who first described it in 200AD.

I have seen many double rainbows, fog bows, monochrome rainbow bow(at sunrise I have a photo of this one too), and a 7+ layer rainbow, I have a few photos of this ... I have only seen this kind of rainbow mentioned once... it was not inverted but just repeated the 7 color pattern 7+times....

I’ve seen many double rainbows, a double rainbow with the first having a second layer, I’ve seen many fire rainbows (I even saw one that was a complete halo), I’ve seen a halo around the moon, and I might’ve seen a triple rainbow at some point.

How can you prove what you say is true. I studied meteorology at university and was ‘told’ that rainbows form because of light refractions in ice crystals but how do / can I actually know this is true?

Fire rainbows and rainbows that are seen in cirrus clouds are made of ice crystals, but I believe that any other rainbow is made of water droplets.
