Cirrus SR20 Flight Lessons - Ep. 1 Turn, Climb, and Descend

Back in the air after 2 lessons that ended up being ground school due to weather. Today we work on turning at 10, 20, and 30 degrees. Climbs and descents + a nice touch of motion sickness (awesome!). Hey, that's a great plane, flown it many times and a couple of times with your instructor, she's a great instructor. As far as the motion sickness goes, don't worry about it and don't be thinking about it, it probably won't happen again. That looked like a bumpy day, which probably has more to do with your issue than the turns, which just add on to the uneasiness. As you get used to flying it shouldn't be an issue, carry a bag with you just in case, then forget about it. Make sure you have plenty of air focused on you and keep the cabin cool. That airplane has an air conditioner, use it. Stay hydrated and don't eat a burrito before your lesson. Keep your focus on the horizon when you feel queasy, not the inside the airplane, if possible. You did well, flying is a lot different when you start than what most people think it is. Just focus and learn, especially from your mistakes. Chair fly and go through the procedures in your head. Like I said, you have a good instructor, so pay attention. Finally I would try to fly at least once, if not twice a week, you'll progress faster. Let your instructor worry about the weather. A lot of people are nauseated in the beginning. I experienced it too but it went away after a few flights. Part of it is nervousness and obviously the motion. But once you fully take control and fly yourself the entire flight, take off to landing, and you are inputting all of the controls, your body and brain knows what is coming, so the movement is not unexpected. It's easier to be sick as a passenger or student than as the actual pilot. The same is true in cars... Passengers get motion sickness, but the driver never does because the driver is inputting the commands and knows what's coming before the passengers. Keep your stomach dry so eat solid food before flight, bread, crackers, bagels. The less liquid sloshing around your stomach the better, not to mention that you won't be able to urinate until you land.

Great video. So many are when people are experienced with the Cirrus. BTW, what do you use to record the cockpit conversation to record the video to sync with the GoPro's?

Thanks, Steve! For recording, there’s a special cable you can use to connect the GoPro to one of the headphone connectors in the cockpit. That part is fairly simple. Synchronizing the 3 cameras is not so easy though. I have to make some sort of fast motion (like a clap) that is visible to all three cameras and then sync each video track in Final Cut Pro so I can edit between each view.

I was looking for Cirrus Videos at Hanscom. I am going to be starting my flight training at mike goulian aviation January of 2020. Did you get your pilot's license? How did you like your training?

Hi Jason, I have not yet received my pilot's license. This is by design as I've taken the approach of going slow for now. I have to say I absolutely love the folks at MGAV! You will be in great hands. Which instructor will you be working with? They're all great. Will work with you at your own pace and first rate instruction.

To avoid motion sickness avoid unnecessary head movements. If possibly look only with your eyes. After that work on getting some fresh airflow.

Took my 5th flight lesson today and I’m 5 for 5 getting air sick to the point of telling my instructor to take me back. Did you ever get over it?

Hey there, I can say that with the ReliefBand I was able to complete lessons with far less motion sickness. That said, Sean (the instructor on my first video) mentioned that a friend of his had motion sickness for weeks before it resolved. One other thing I've tried that has helped is VR. If you can access a flight sim in VR you can practice maneuvers and build up your tolerance. This has helped me quite a bit as well. Good luck and keep at it.

If this your first flight! Way to much info on take off. You should be listening to ATC and keeping a vigilant lookout!
