Nice descent through thickish cloud in moderate icing conditions. Nice flying Jonathan! The English RT accent hasn't thrown the US ATC?

That thing can't do coupled vnav arrivals?
@frankgallagher5786
@frankgallagher5786 3 жыл бұрын
why do you put all the crossing altitudes in the descent? if you are on a vnav descent can't you just set minimums or the minimum cleared alt?
@jg4403
@jg4403 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. The segments he was bugging the crossing altitudes are all before GS intercept (which is at BOEEE). At that point, he will/did just bug the missed approach altitude and would fly the GS all the way down. VNAV for the segments before GS intercept is generally usable (except for certain situations) but it appears they opted to go with a slightly more manually method until GS intercept. Cheers!

For me the most impressive is the sound of silence. Do you have an active nose reduction or it is naturally that silent?

@mathieuclement8011

When they aren’t talking the squelch of the intercom just drops all sounds, so the recording device hooked to it will capture silence. It would do the same in a Piper Cub.
@jg4403
@jg4403 3 жыл бұрын
It is a combination of the squelch settings and the connector/adapter being used.

Why did you have the pilot sequence every altitude drop before the localizer. If you loaded the approach and had the different altitudes on the flight plan menus, shouldn’t the VPATH sequenced the drops?
@lewieford6416
@lewieford6416 6 ай бұрын
This arrival should have been briefed and loaded before descending into the clouds, instead of adjusting altitude after each waypoint. Doesn't this Garmin system have that capability? It also would relieve workload to select a descent that doesn't require a level off.

Not a pilot. Know nothing about it. But I have this question. Is aviation advanced to the point where a pilot could land in blinding conditions - like a white out blizzard or severe fog ? Meaning are there electronics ( and maybe software to help ) added to modern planes ( and especially passenger airliners for profit ) that allow this - when there is no other option of waiting for clearer conditions ? Kind of like the whole "driverless" deal with cars now - Tesla for example. Where a pilot could be able to use instruments - video screens and other help along the way and could land without really seeing what is going on outside - due to snow - clouds etc . . ?

Kind of - only major jets made by Boeing and Airbus have what is called CAT 3 ILS. That can take the plane automatically basically to the ground BUT it requires specialty training by the captain and the airport must be equipped for it. Only major airports have it. For all other planes usually the lowest you can go is 300 feet above the ground on an ILS approach. Again not every airport has an ILS and with GPS approaches you have a lot of variety in minimum altitudes depending on what type of GPS you have and the type of approach. If you want to learn more about CAT 3 look up the videos by Mentor Pilot and or Capital Joe they explain it really well.
@jg4403
@jg4403 3 жыл бұрын
Everything that Jacob said! One small thing though, the "typical" CAT 1 ILS actually takes you down to 200ft above the ground. CAT 2 will be typically 100 feet above ground.

The L-1011 developed in 1970 had autoland and autoland existed before that. A CAT-IIIc approach has no minimum altitude and no visibility minimums.
@KenLeonard
@KenLeonard 3 жыл бұрын
Garmin has an “autoland” button for the passenger if the single pilot takes a bird in the face or has a medical emergency. The plane will fly to a suitable airport and land and brake to a stop. Not for normal ops but can do it and certified.
@flyingdaytrader
@flyingdaytrader 3 жыл бұрын
@@KenLeonard I totally forgot about that. Yes garmin has the Halo system now which gives passengers the ability to land a plan in an emergency. Not sure what requirements the airfield needs for it to work (most likely a WAAS approach at the least and maybe VFR conditions??? I’ve only seen the AOPA article on it when they were testing) but they do have a way to bring a plane all the way to the ground and to a stop. Piper M600 have them and I believe Cirrus is working on getting it added to vision jets.

Aviation "Glory Rainbows" can only be seen from flying machines! Pilots have been known to confuse them with Glory Holes in inclement weather if hypoxic!
