You're forgetting that Jones is going to be 36 this year. He's not the young Jones that was running through older veterans anymore. And while a lot of HW's do have the history of being very competitive at older age, it's always the natural career long HW's, or fighters that moved up to HW at a young age, like Overeem. Not just finally moving up at 35/36 years old with years of weight cutting behind them. I think Jones struggles with a lot of the younger HWs, like Gane, Blaydes, Pavlovich, Aspinall.

I think this is actually good for Blades as there’s a chance that Jones will need to take Gane down to avoid getting out struck. The same could end up happening w Stipe. If Jon ends up needing to rely on his wrestling more at HW, it makes for a more interesting narrative vs Blades later on IMO. Not to mention having close to a year to watch Jones at HW and make adjustments.

Punching power is a big deal at heavyweight. Tai has it, so does Francis and Stipe to some degree. Curtis, Jon and Cyril don't have one punch KO power (at least Jon never had it at light heavyweight). Curtis, Stipe and Jon are the strong wrestlers of the top of the division. It looks like Stipe has a good skill set to compete against Jon, Curtis and Cyril. So giving him the next title shot makes sense. You could say the same for Curtis
