Last year, as part of an OTT restomod of my '83 SEC 126, I replaced the entire fuel system including all pipes, unions, hoses, injectors (K-Jet), seals, filters, bits 'n' bobs ... with brand-new, brand-correct, spec-correct components - some NoS; some since gone NLA everywhere. The only remaining original parts are a refurbished fuel-distributor valve block (don't know its formal name) and the fuel tank. The latter received the full POR-15 multi-treatment inside and out after a week immersed in an electrolytic bath (washing soda - Na2CO3). Result: It hums sweetly. :-) Now I've got to replace, re-plum, and re-wire the entire dashboard (!!) before I can enjoy a cruise in it. I also tried to cut open the old accumulator, but lengthwise. Once my blade encountered that spring (I didn't know what was in there and just *had* to know!) everything went rapidly ugly: Blade snagged on spring after cutting into it a few microns; blade shattered, distributing shrapnel widely; accum. casing failed, went rapidly banana-shaped and freed the spring to fire right through a double drywall partition! Life's lessons can *(sometimes)* be worth the cost of new underwear. :-0

I sold my old Merk so I have no need to watch your videos anymore but I still do anyway just because I find them interesting.

Now that would have been a good video - watching the disassembly of that accumulator. Thanks Kent.

That is one mean spring! Like you, I am surprised at its size and strength.

We cut it up so you don't have to😀. I knew there was a spring and like you would probably have cut the old one up to see, but now I've seen how big it is; no way!

that is amazing, now you know where an extra suspension coils spring is if you should need one

Where can I find the video that goes into what it does and how it work. I find when I learn about how these systems work I can better understand how to repair them. Just got my first Mercedes!

1982 380 SL WHY DOES MY BRAND NEW BOSCH PUMP MAKE A WHINING NOISE, AND THE CAR IS STALLING OUT TOO?

I wondered what was inside of there. Shocking to say the least! I don't need to open one, I will take your word for it. Now, I am wondering, what causes the failure? Now I want to know.
@Mercedessource2 ай бұрын
Simple - old age and bad fuel ruin and crack the rubber diaphragm. Then it can not hold pressure.
@ronalddean36302 ай бұрын
@@Mercedessource awesome, thank you. I am scheduled to have it replaced next week. My car is a 1985 380SL. The surging and hot starts have been terrible to live with.

I cut one open what wasn't holding Pressure, the new one came an decided to cut it open the old one. As i cut most ot it open it shot off. A lot of Pressure in these accumulator, you hear a slight noise when engine is turned off, knew i wasn't the only one to do this 😆

OMG that's crazy! We all know Germans LOVE to over-complicate things but this is absolutely ridiculous. What's the purpose of that thing anyway and is it even necessary. American cars have never had such a thing in their fuel systems...
@johnmcdonald16474 жыл бұрын
It's necessary for holding the fuel pressure from the pump assembly forward to the fuel distributor when if you go to restart within 30 minutes or so the fuel hasn't vapourised due to heat from the engine bay.
@nealeburgess67564 жыл бұрын
It retains fuel pressure in the system, thus helping start up. No need to wait for pump to build pressure, especially when battery voltage is low while cranking.
@tonyreyes99693 жыл бұрын
After the engine has been switched off, the fuel accumulator maintains the pressure in the fuel system in order to facilitate re-starting, particularly when the engine is hot. The design of the accumulator housing is such that it deadens the noise from the electric fuel pump when the engine is running. The interior of the accumulator is divided into two chambers by means of a diaphragm. One chamber serves as the accumulator volume for the fuel, the other chamber contains the spring.
