As a Xhosa from Zimbabwe this makes me well represented, although I feel as though it’s so unrecognized that it has to be diluted with other languages as it feels irrelevant

As a Zimbabwean Ndebele i understand Zimbabwean Xhosas better than i understand the visitors from SA. I think we corrupted their language. Anyway when i was growing up Xhosas in Zim were called amafengu ,can someone confirm this or am i mixing them up with other people?

Language to survive is constantly adapting and changing to reflect changing lives, experiences and cultures. It’s not corruption, it’s the nature of language when it travels or passage of time it changes/modifies. American English or Australian English is not a corruption of British English. Even within British English there are some 40 different dialects, that is not corruption. Orthography & formal schooling brought in standardisation of language and killing of many dialects in linguistics. That said many dialects remain even in what we refer to as IsiXhosa, you have Bhaca, Gcaleka, Thembu, Mpondomise, Ngqika, Mpondo, Mfengu, Bomvana, Hlubi, Cele, Xesibe etc. There are different levels of of mutual intelligibility within different ‘dialects/languages’.
