Our society is regressing not progressing.. Don't be fooled by the fact we have a smartphone! My grandparents had a humble hovel to live in.. Now people are dying on our streets. We have become a savage, malignantly greedy dog eat dog society where the oligarchs use philantrophy to toss down a few gold coins to the working peasants.

I would say our society is breaking down. "Regressing" implies a temporary reversal. I hope that's all it is. But I fear we have come to the end of an era. People still build hovels, tents, and other simple homes. But these get bulldozed or crushed in a garbage truck, by people paid with tax dollars.

Dear Friend, Superb Analysis !! Iam from India and in our cities we have the problem of Slums. Living under terrible pathetic living conditions in a Slum is even more worse. Living in a Slum doesnt mean Living in a small home... It is worst than being without home. Request you to also work upon Slum problem that exists in countries like India and other developing countries. Till now no one has bothered about it... Thanks and Keep up the Good Work !!

No good society can allow poverty when it allows prosperity. Homelessness is a moral failing: It is a moral failing of the society that allows it. Indeed it is critical to understand that every person has the fundamental right to a habitable dwelling. All basic human needs must be met by any sane society. Not only are many more people than the government estimates unhoused, I would guess that the number of people who live in housing precarity is likely half the American population who lives in a dwelling. If humanity doesn't kill capitalism, capitalism will kill humanity. Remember this forever: Capitalism is so craven that it seeks only to profit from the horrors it creates, not solutions to fixing them.

the problem isn't capitalism. It works. Look at George Soros, David Rockefeller, Bill Gates, IBM. Apple, Dell, HP you think they are not successful ? It works the problem is after it worked for all of them, they turn around and try to block it form working for someone else because they don't competition., They want to be corrupt, that isn't a capitalism's fault. That's all on there greedy ass's. We do not have capitalism right now we have crony capitalism "an economic system characterized by close, mutually advantageous relationships between business leaders and government officials"

@@Bewefau yes, and the federal govt can choose to do so. It gives billions and millions to the biggest industries aka "wall Street" every year, plus 1T for the military industrial complex, but comparative pennies for social needs. You should see this as wrong. In a country as well off as ours, there's no reason for everyone not to be able to access methods to meet their basic needs. Also, we can all continue to pay our taxes while demanding they are used in better ways. Finally - what should happen to you if you ever fall on hard times?? If you don't have friends or family to help you? Perhaps some charity will step in. But if there isn't one when you need it to meet your need??? What then?? You just suffer?? Why?? I don't want that. No, you should have another option. OR - we can have, at a minimum, enough public programs and services in place, aka "safety net programs" to help take care of people in need. I mean these things will exist for you too if you ever need them. By raising taxes on big business and the 1%, we can easily provide for everyone.

I often enjoy irony, but the disparity between the few and the many in New York paints a sickening picture. I used to be comfortable with capitalism. The unfettered control of the housing market by wealthy investors with an insatiable appetite for extravagance has changed my mind. Greed and wasted funding are the source of the problem, not laziness and not addiction. I know too many homeless people who work grueling full time jobs to believe otherwise. The disregard for the elderly, the domestic violence victims, the children and the veterans of war who are dying as a result of that greed is not unlike genocide. At best, the victims have a shortened life span. Thank you for speaking about it. I hope you're not only preaching to the choir.
@tinabraxton4906

Excellent report. Thanks for posting this. I was homeless for years and saw these same things from the inside. HUD's figure is based on an annual count that is only supposed to determine how funding for homeless services should be apportioned between municipalities. It does not and cannot indicate how many people are homeless, since most are simply not found. But the media reports it as a homeless census. One year, when the count was about 450K, the media reported this as a decrease in homelessness. But Dept. of Education statistics showed 2.5 million homeless schoolchildren. We knew very well there were a lot more, because many parents conceal their children's homelessness, for fear of losing custody. And there are babies, toddlers, and other children not in school, and, of course, homeless adults. The real homeless population in the US is probably between 20 and 30 million. Eradication of homelessness, when it comes, will be eradication of homeless people. They will use machine guns, or gas, or burn us in our tents. We are already being set up as scapegoats. The homeless industrial complex will probably be part of that. Homelessness as a condition would be easy to end. Just build housing. It doesn't have to be fancy. Just cheap. We used to live in old hotels and apartments, till those were torn down. After WW2, the US built lots of housing (also funded jobs and education), because they were afraid of 26 million returning vets, who knew how to use high-tech weaponry and would not want to resume the Great Depression economy that preceded the war. As for Germany, it is well known that after the Wall came down, the West carpetbagged the East. That would account for some, though perhaps not all, of the housing privatisation. Capitalism uber alles! The proportion of homeless people in the German population, as wel as the actual number, is much lower than it is the US.

And I'm not an addict nor am I insane, it's just the reality for already marginalized people dealing with health issues & disabilities, and I live a very simple life. I never got used to homelessness. I’m from HawAii. Our politicians sold out to luxury developers. Dozens of opulent, grotesque multimillion were built in Kaakako.Right across the street is a huge tent citiy. Tent cities at every single park in Honolulu . This has been happening for around 20 years now. What really bothers me is the attitude of my friends and coworkers, “ They want to be homeless “ the lack of empathy or compassion is infuriating. Many Rich Chinese have bought many of those apartments, they don’t live there, they don’t contribute anything except to raise housing prices and lack of inventory. Sad😅

The rusty iron filings "fortified" into the food supply under false pretenses (they make babies less healthy as evidenced by... less healthy babies over time) are damaging mitochondria, which then causes symptoms that result in stories called diseases. This includes mental diseases. Bio-copper plays a role as well. Too much zinc depleted my bio-copper and my energy/will/motivation crashed hard. P. S. Let's look at an example of a country where socialism was most successful, namely Yugoslavia (we all know how Yugoslavia was destroyed): -Workers owned the factories and controlled the money flows. -Since the workers controlled the money flow in the factory, they also controlled the surplus money, which was invested in summer and winter resorts, where their workers and their families went on FREE summer and winter vacations. - Since the workers controlled the excess money, buildings were built with that money, whose apartments were ALLOCATED FREE OF CHARGE to the workers of that company...

"Neo-liberal" capitalism is decadent, predatory capitalism. But the problem is not capitalism. The problem is with democracy, or what passes as such today. Here, in the US atleast, both political parties are owned by the wealthy. Right now, when we vote, we get to choose between an outright Fascist Party and a totally bought one. The crises of our time (atleast here in the US) is that the emptiness of this choice is becoming obvious to more and more people. Some of whom believe that Fascism will cut them a better deal. The non-Fascist party is counting on the majority to support them no matter what, in fear of Fascism.

I'm honestly confused. Why wouldn't the government finance housing the unhoused instead of paying a lot more (yearly) to homeless businesses and organizations? What's their logic/excuse/bullsh*t? Does this policy help repel the homeless and kick them outside the city? Does it subsidize a living wage for low-paying but essential jobs in the city? Are they afraid of a rush on the city by 'undesirables' claiming the new housing provided by the government? I can't understand.

Provision of basic needs: Socialism is based on the provision of basic needs for all citizens, including health, education and housing, while capitalism can lead to difficulties in accessing these basic services. Fewer economic crises: Socialists argue that socialism can reduce the frequency and severity of economic crises that arise from the capitalist system. Price Control: Socialism can allow the government to have greater control over the prices of basic necessities, which can help fight inflation and protect consumers. Workers' rights: A socialist system usually protects the rights of workers and unions more strongly, providing them with better working conditions and greater bargaining power. Social stability: Socialists argue that socialism can contribute to greater social stability because it reduces economic tensions and inequalities. Environmental sustainability: A socialist system can better regulate and control the exploitation of resources and protect the environment, because it relies less on unlimited growth and profits. Free Education and Health: Socialism often offers free education and health for all citizens, which can improve access to these essential services. Less economic inequality: Socialism tends to reduce differences in wealth and income between individuals, which can contribute to a more stable society. Social security: Socialism can ensure greater social security for citizens through social assistance programs and pension systems

Is this what you are talking about, or a step in the right direction? Because as I understand where the money came from, it came from education taxes, as opposed to money for road infrastructure. I mean, Portland and some of the larger cities like Eugene have great infrastructure. But that education money could have been better spent on educating rural Oregon. It seems progressive until you actually look at the whole picture. I mean, not funding education for the sake of managing homelessness probably creates a revolving door. We give some of it to drug addicts too, instead of those who don't do drugs. What a place. And the Oregon health plan is similarly a huge joke. Don't have a computer, access to one, or an address... Good luck! Heck, even if you do, good luck.

To put it simple. If an Einstein borns in a slum the probability to him to have his opportunity is going to be lower than an idiot born from a rich family. This means you are not evolving the humanity but regressing.

This channel is about socialism, right? In China there are hardly any homeless people, almost nonexistent. Many contributing factors but low rent is a significant one. Home prices in Beijing and Shanghai are the highest. A new 1500 sq ft 3 bedroom apartment costs 2 million dollars to buy and 3000 to rent. These are cities with 25 million population. Millions of low income earners like couriers and waitresses make about 1000 dollars a month. They live in older apartments and share units. Most college fresh grads share apartments too. However rent drop significantly from 1st tier cities to 5th tier cities. Same new apartment in 5th tier cities costs 150,000 dollars and 200 to rent, also comes with 5G and EV charging. One needs some imagination to fathom these prices had been increasing along the economy for 20 years. Before that the housings, infrastructure, and the local economy didn’t exist. There are other factors like economic growth, job availability, education, infrastructure efficiency, planned development, family attachment, social security, health care, social workers, and food availability, food prices are low compared to the West. A KZbin video titled Searching for Homeless People in China by Living in China provides a glimpse of a 5th tier city.

China's economy resembles FDRs US economy, which was created by socialist parties. China will subsidize socialist constitutions. Before long north Koreans will be traveling the world and laughing at Americans.

Homeless problem can't be solved because they can never make enough income to afford a home or apt. If provided free housing will trash them out and abandon them in a few years

To declare something that you cannot provide yourself to be a "human right" is to simultaneously declare that you have the right to consume the fruits of another person's labor. That is basically reintroducing slavery into society. And the finger wagger fails to mention that there have been many experiments over time where housing has been created for those unable to provide their own, and they have been seriously ineffective, even to the point of disasterous. Americans living in public housing tend to destroy it.

Many people could provide themselves with homes, food, and healthcare from the fruits of their own labor of they weren't being made wage slaves by the rich. The poor don't need the rich to rescue them, they need the rich to stop hurting them.

Not consuming the fruits of another person's labour is impossible in societal life. If something is yours by right, it's also by definition something other people are required to give or required not to take from you. The imbalance comes when you control the outcomes and benefits of labour, and thus keep for yourself more than your share of direct contribution to production. That's why salary-work under capitalism has been called waged slavery. Also, affordable housing doesn't work without full employment policies and market controls. Full employment policies ensure most people will have the means to pay for maintenance and repairs, preventing the mentioned "destruction", which is actually just infrastructure decay. And market control prevents gentrification and means people won't just sell their once affordable home whenever housing speculation comes.

Ok ok wow that was just so unfriendly of me. Let's try again You're kind of lolbertarianism isn't needed here Yeah it's a right. In a humane society, certain things are protected. I would think a right to survive and a right to proper shelter should be top of that list and there are various good ways to provide this Ok bye
