Without access to menstrual hygiene products, women may use makeshift sanitation products. That practice can lead to dangerous physical health impacts such as vaginal and urinary tract infections, severe reproductive health conditions and toxic shock syndrome. Source: American Medical Association

Ghana has a constrained health system, with a population of about 30 million, and an estimated 1.1 medical doctors and 27.1 nurses and midwives per 10,000 population. According to data from the WHO, there is 1 doctor for every 5,000 people in Africa in 2015. The population in Africa in 2020 amounted to 1,331,396,559 people. If we were to use the above ratio, we can estimate that there are about 266,279 doctors in all of Africa (1,331,396,559 / 5,000). Sources: The Conversation. Ask Wonder 13:14

16.9 million people who menstruate in the US are living in poverty. Two-thirds of the 16.9 million low-income women in the US could not afford menstrual products in the past year, with a half of this needing to choose between menstrual products and food.
