On 1 and 2 June 2024, scientist Dr. Toste Tanhua and I sailed from Svendborg (Denmark) to Kiel (Germany), deploying a number of CTDO instruments and measuring conductivity, temperature, depth and oxygen along the way.
Sailing for Oxygen is an initiative that GEOMAR and Trans-Ocean eV are expanding together. Interested crews can help in the pilot project Citizen Science: Sailing for Oxygen in Kiel Bay to better understand the oceans and find answers to two central questions in marine research:
• How much oxygen does the Baltic Sea contain at different water depths?
• How do the concentrations of this vital gas change over the course of a summer?
This initiative is supported by S.O.O.P. (Shaping an Ocean Of Possibilities), an innovation platform that aims to support non-scientists and create a marketplace to make ocean observations.
