Colruyt Group aims to capture at least the equivalent of its remaining greenhouse gas emissions from 2030. To achieve this, Colruyt is planting a large forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo with as many as 12 million trees. N'situ Pelende - or "the forest of Pelende" - celebrated its first anniversary in the summer of 2023.
Colruyt Group has already taken many steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2030, Colruyt Group wants to reduce those emissions by at least 42%. Because not all emissions can be eliminated, Colruyt compensates the remaining emissions by planting trees in Congo. These trees store CO2 during their growth process in their trunks, leaves and roots. Moreover, this project contributes to more biodiversity, employment and prosperity for the local population.
In 2023, Colruyt Group assigned me to document the project in Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Africa.
