CITIZEN unveils Caliber 0200, its first new mechanical watch for 11 years.
Mechanical watches with Caliber 0200 will be sold under The CITIZEN brand.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
《A new mechanical movement》
“Better Starts Now” is the CITIZEN philosophy. CITIZEN approaches watchmaking the same way. The new products we’re announcing today are mechanical watches. CITIZEN’s first product was a mechanical pocket watch.
《Caliber 0200》
CITIZEN built a new group-wide development and manufacturing system for Caliber 0200. Swiss firm La Joux-Perret joined Citizen Watch Group in 2012. We combined their expertise in development, manufacturing, and decoration with our expertise in accuracy and component-making to produce a mechanical movement rooted in the watchmaking cultures of two countries.
《CITIZEN history》
Kamekichi Yamazaki was determined to produce a Japanese pocket watch with the same quality level as high-end imports. The mayor of Tokyo named the watch CITIZEN, later to become our company name.
《Accuracy at component level》
Increased component precision leads to increased timekeeping accuracy. Sustained, accurate timekeeping has always been CITIZEN’s prime goal. For Caliber 0200, we use a free-sprung balance wheel, the best mechanism for long-running, high-level accuracy. By improving component precision, we increased the isochronism and achieved the desired accuracy.
《Aesthetics and accuracy》
With Caliber 0200, aesthetics and accuracy were the focus. We made countless trial layouts to create a beautiful movement. We eventually arrived at the layout that displays the balance wheel and its beautifully finished gears to best advantage.
《Small second layout》
With Caliber 0200, we use a small second layout as a visual highlight and to show off the movement. In our pursuit of a movement with its own aesthetic, we ended up using the same small second layout as in CITIZEN’s first-ever pocket watch, with a more modern movement design.
《The CITIZEN 》
“To pursue the essence of the watch and become an integral part of users’ lives” is the brand promise of The CITIZEN. A beautiful movement like Caliber 0200 needs to be housed in a suitably beautiful watch. A mechanical watch embodying Citizen Watch Group’s new direction must look cutting-edge, and we came up with a strong, sharp design.
《Series 8》
Series 8 is a mechanical watch collection with enhanced magnetic resistance for a broad audience. Debuting outside Japan in 2021, Series 8 combines functionality and design. With a case made up of straight lines and simple surfaces with bold matt hairlines for texture, Series 8 looks modern and sporty. It uses the Caliber 0950 and Caliber 0951 mechanical movements. These are “smart design” mechanical watches for today’s lifestyle.

Thank you Japan, for Orient, Seiko, and Citizen, the reason why I love and understand the meaning in horology. I admire japanese culture and philosophy, for that reason, "Better starts now" is so inspiring and gives us something beautiful without all the boring snobbery of being recognized as some "elite" that makes the hobby absolutely stupid and superficial.

It's great to see Citizen catching up with the luxury mechanical market, and even greater to get extensive insight into their new caliber. For my. taste, they've always been far too modest in marketing their movement designs.

well they have some cool watches let's say that. But given the size and output level of each of these brands. It's very difficult to just say they're cool brands. I think Seiko and Casio has achieved a level of coolness within certain sectors of the market. And some of their outputs are truly amazing. Citizen and Orient are not cool at all lol. They also have some decent outputs but as a brand they have as much coolness as a Hotpoint washerdryer. It's just the reality.

Mr. Oji, thank you for a superb presentation. I urge you to take a look at your Bulova Watch division, and breathe new life into it. The Precisionist movement was an engineering marvel. Many mechanical watch aficionados are drawn to it’s quartz accuracy and beautiful sweeping seconds hand. Unfortunately, Bulova styling, in my opinion, leaves much to be desired. I believe Bulova, with it’s rich history, has been overlooked for many years now. Utilizing the Precisionist movement, in more classically styled watches, would result in huge success for the brand.

Japanese better bang per buck compared to Swiss entry level like ETA? Yes, no doubt I’d take a Japanese movement around 500 dollars than a Swiss, but once you get past a thousand there is no beating the Swiss at their own game
@raycollington4310
@raycollington4310 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsaia54 I'm still bruised from a recent negative experience with IWC. I have to stop looking at a disassembled movement and thinking these few machine made parts cost nothing compared to the eye watering SRP. At the lower end, the Swiss keep knocking out the same old battery quartz daily beater jobs. No solar, battery hatch, charging or ten year lithium. This may be fine for some countries with professional high street stores who will change the battery in minutes. I live in the UK where you have to either do it yourself or send it away. The Japanese seem miles ahead. Thanks for your comments.

Water resistant for at least 100m. 8. Bracelet must be adjustable for wrist size and interchangeable with leather. 9. I’m looking for all of these in one package retailed for under $300. 10. Weekday and day of the month must be easily readable without stressing the eye. Now, take this to your marketing gurus and make me my watch!

Looks like a very good accurate movement. Accuracy to a certain level isn't anything to boast about in the modern age. I think citizen realise that and went for a different tactic. Mass production but with beauty. Mass beveling pearlage stripes brush finish. This is a very attractive movement for a mass produced product. Compared to the functional brutalist look of the seiKo movement it's a more refined looking thing. It will definitely win orders on the microbrand market

You know, after my first Citizen watch, I turned my eyes over Seiko. This, this people still have something that those at Seiko is starting to forget. I don't know what it is. Yes, a lot of Citizen's watches don't have better specs than Seiko's. But there is something that really pull me toward their watches after my first Citizen.

According to "a blog to watch" it will be retailing at 6000 USD. ... which imho is waaaay to much for a watch that is all about the movement but is not really better speced than a lets say Nomos, Rolex, not even talking Omega which produces basically the best speced movements tech-wise (Metas) in this price segment. I would have seen it 3000-5000 max!!!

Your watch has a capacitor which is basically a rechargeable battery that will need to be changed every 5-10 years.

Really like the way you guys are shifting your business. I believe Citizen will surpass Seiko to be the best watchmaker in Japan. However, I hope the second hand for the Caliber 0200 model needs to improve its quality. Finishing is lacking for the high-end watch. Also, please adopt your paper dial to different models. It is by far the best dial, and I believe it is far better than the GS snowflake. Additionally, I hope Citizen developed its own design identity. I feel like the watch is a combination of what is popular in the market. The sharp hands from GS, unibody Genta-esq case design, textured dials now popular in many sport steel watches (GS, chopard, etc.). I feel like Citizen needs a distinguishable design queue that can make the watch "pop" more.
