Citrate utilization test of bacteria

The test is mainly used to differentiate among enteric bacteria on the basis of their ability to utilize citrate as the sole source of carbon which depends upon the presence of an enzyme citrase that breaks down the citrate to oxaloacetic acid and acitic acid.
