Your comment that it's cheaply built is accurate and fair, and I don't think any owners or potential buyers would be aggrieved by its (alleged) imperfections if - IF - the vehicle were also cheap to buy in the first place. £8,000 is a lot of money. Yep. Even in 2023. Say it slowly: eight... THOUSAND... pounds... Oh, I know EV drivers have been cleverly conditioned by the motor industry (desperate to recoup the steady income lost from oil-hungry, main dealer-friendly ICE cars) to believe that £25,000 or £45,000 or £60,000 is a normal price to pay for their personal transport, and the various lease or never-never rental or whatever agreements delude people into thinking that 'easy monthly payments' are the answer to all their problems. "Buy another phone! Your current one's almost a year old! Buy a new car! Buy a boat! Buy a huge motor-caravan! You're special! You deserve it! Buy a plane! Rent a helicopter! Live a millionaire's lifestyle one month at a time!!! You're worth it!!!" Good grief. Doesn't anybody look at the bottom line any more? The point is, people now expect to pay a lot of cash for their dash, but they also expect to get adequate value for their (monthly) money. Quality. Reliability. The Ami doesn't seem to live up to its price tag. If it could be bought cheaply enough (imported from China for, say, £2,500 and then fettled, rebuilt and re-engineered via a Haynes Manual and lovingly fitted with upgraded bits and bobs to suit our atrocious roads and weather conditions) I could see it acquiring cult status as a fun project for auto-nerds, rather like the Linux operating system: the scope for fiddling, customising and improving it is limitless, and many people spend more time tinkering than actually doing any work with it. But the base product needs to be cheap. In the case of Linux, the cost is £0.00. It's free. Yay. The Ami - with all its charm, quirks, faults and foibles - should cost a third of what it does. People would then feel happy about spending a few grand on parts and a few years of their free time turning it into a little sparkling gem. [You know: splash on the Waxoyl; break out the choccy Hobnobs; weld up some Binky brackets.🎵 Get the funk out...🤭] Paying £8,000 for an apparently unfinished vehicle just ain't right.

What you say, totally agree and it's not as if it's motorway legal, where I live we have many expressways, motorway access and slip roads. For the price they could have beefed it up a tad and increased speed a tad to make it more usable, of course not expecting long motorway journeys but for local short expressways that are 60Mph. But then It seems targeted at euro kids on a moped license so figures.

Actually it sounds from this like it's as big a pile of rubbish that the original Citroen Ami petrol car was back in the 1970s. Grossly underpowered, tacky interior, abominable de-misting, and very unsafe pulling out into fast traffic the wretched thing is going to be like the 2CV only worse - not enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding; engine could barely run a pencil sharpener. But as usual the French have managed to make something as ugly as possible - this new design has all the appeal of a kitchen pedal-bin. Well this review made me laugh so I had to like it

Hey there! I always suggest to go and see one and drive one. The way it drives (and the drive train Valeo produced is great) BUT there are just several flaws that many people have experienced. This is probably the best overview of the Citroen Ami. I wanted one for a city centre use. However, there are times, I need to go on a dual-carriage and 30mph, would be too slow. It is unfortunate as there is lot to like with the Citroen Ami. They are trying to force us to cycle, which is great for those who lifecycle works. However, for me a lightweight car such as the Citroen Ami, solves a lot of problems.
@anthonytube
@anthonytube Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I am glad it helped you a little! Yes it's the major issue, making sure you can avoid fast flowing roads as we both know the driving public are a speedy, uncaring bunch! Despite the higher electricity costs the Ami is MUCH cheaper to run than my cars... I think before the huge energy hikes it would have costs less than £1 for around 40 miles (in nice weather). The Ami is a design piece love it or hate it and it's so much fun to drive. Sadly as many Citroenists will say, it's very flawed and next to useless in cold and wet weather but when moderate it's brilliant and as you say it solves a lot of problems and provides fun, inner city transportation. Thanks again! Anthony :-)

Had my Ami 6 months, no. 186 in the country, just short of 1k miles, other than the range issue and reduced power in very cold weather I have none of the issues you list. Mine does not even steam up, no water ingress, no lock problem, she's been great. Can't see any problem with the brake position, indicator or wiper, not experiences stones and dirt flying about. Watching your video before buying might have put me off which would have been a real shame
@anthonytube
@anthonytube Жыл бұрын
That would have been a real shame and as I say many times I love the Ami and always suggest going to check one out as believe it or not I am a fan... I bought one after all. However you are a very lucky boy as so many people have had issues. Mine are so bad, Citroen are replacing it! The leak would contribute to steaming up but again many people have this steaming up issue so I can assume you aren't out it very cold and wet weather? Maybe you keep yours in a garage over night? Locks a common fault, they did a recall and had one replaced. They did an early recall to fit 1/2 liners as locks were failing on earlier Amis but on mine grit still going up there. If you live where I do with lot's of gravel, grit and open pot holes the stuff goes everywhere and you can hear the stones pinging around. I hopefully got a Friday edition but still love driving it. The Ami is charming but the build quality is poor. My belt starting squeaking on take off now and another chaps suspension strut broke apart. Things can of course go wrong but I've had many faults but hoping the next one will not leak. Best wishes

Also strangely the marketing men think we “don’t want” fun small eco options like this and want 2 1/2 ton SUVs instead. Shame.

You are right! I think the Ami was okay at around £5k but £8k is a lot for this level of quality IMO. We need more Chinese mini EV's but hopefully will come soon. I'm not sure why the 'West' is so far behind Asia. It's true, we all need more small vehicles not HUGE SUV's! I drop my daughter to nursery and the Mum's driving Audi Q7's then struggle to leave the car park (as too wide for the road!). Cheers !

It seems major western car makers want to prioritise lower volume large, expensive ev’s over high volume, cheap, small ev’s because they can make more money on them. I think the EU and U.K. governments are complicit in this by not certifying Chinese mini ev’s for sale here. If they were really serious about reducing co2 emissions from vehicles then they would allow them.

Here in France with an eco grant, I think the Ami is around the 6,000€ mark. Which is cheap compared to the price of the other "sans permis" cars... Aixam... Ligier etc. Those are more around the 10-13,000€ price range. My van is sans permis and bought second hand, that wasn't cheap either for what it is. The chassis on the Ami appears more substantial than other sans permis.

I am sorry to have a downer on the Ami! I think it's hard to compare as very few things are made like they used to be. Truthfully the Ami drives great, smooth and grippy but the overall 'construction' is sub par really. it's essentially a thin tube frame wearing plastic panels. The roof sections are essentially glued on top of the frame. I don't think with normal use (in the UK at least) the Ami will last beyond a few years. It will look unsightly when the frame and rear drums are all rusted up. Best wishes Anthony

I'd love one of these, they look so much fun and I think I'd actually get out of the house, but 8K for something that can't even get me to my job (20 Km) because all the roads are 50Kmph is a though nut to crack, they are coincided a danger on the road here and everyone hates them because they can't reach the speed limits or regular roads. Not to mention the safety. 8K IS cheaper than the competition, but I find it 4K too much, as the competition (like Ligier) has second hand minicars with a much better build quality of that price, however those are always diesel ofc. They do look lovely in France as the channel 'Me and Mon AMI' proves where winters are very mild to non existing and it only rains once every few months, instead of the colder winters and nearly always raining situation in Belgium (and UK and we have similar weathers).

Another typical Citroen, they look good from a distance but move close to them and the shoddy build quality is easy to find, nothing fits as it should, they rattle and creak, some parts will split and fall off both inside and out. Yes i was stupid enough to buy one many years ago, but like a lot of cars from France or Italy they are a nightmare to own, and depreciate at an alarming rate, used car dealers avoid them, you can find them in the auctions for very low bids. I really don’t get the economics of something like this. If you only have a small budget just get something second hand. I know it is nothing alike but I bought a second hand 2010 Toyota Avensis estate 3 years ago. £1900 for the 2.2l diesel. £210pa to tax and less than that to insure. Say £400pa for repairs to play it safe. 40mpg and 170bhp. 6000 miles pa so £1050 pa in fuel. 3 years ownership cost of approx £7390 all done in quiet comfort with heated seats, air con and cruise control, not limited to 28mph and happy to sit on the motorway all day with 5 people and a weeks worth of luggage in the boot or move a fridge freezer etc. This is not even a very favourable comparison as you could get a much cheaper to run smaller second hand car that would still be much nicer than the Ami. I would love a little EV and I really like the idea but if your budget is tight I don’t get it at all.

Hey there! My Ami isn't or shouldn't be too early as it was delivered Jan 2023. I have seen several issues on other Ami's but I'm sure some are better than others! The Ami drives great, it really does and really love chucking it around at the dizzy speed of 28 MPH! It's charming and can only hope the next one will be better. To be honest now I own it, I think the price is a little high for what you actually get however it serves it's purpose very well and is part of the family. It's like a sickly dog ! :-) Best wishes Anthony

That rear panel alignment is appalling, gap between rear body panel and rear wheel should of course be the same on both sides. Dreadful. And that grey looks exactly like grey primer, not a good look, makes it look unfinished. My advice would be to reject it if you can and get a Fiat Topolino - all the bits you love (running gear etc) but hopefully a better built, leak-free body. Plus comes in proper colours.

I've only seen one Ami close up here in Sheffield where I live. Compared to the price of other small new battery powered cars this appears to be good value even with its variable build quality. But let's put this into perspective. In 2017 I bought a used 2015 Ford Fiesta with a 1.0L 100BHP EcoBoost engine. Zetec trim. The car had 7500 miles on it when I bought it. It cost me £8200. Since then It has depreciated in value by very little due to inflation. Clearly car buyers are being ripped off rotten especially when it comes to EVs. And don't forget the final owner of these EVs has to pay for the disposal of the batteries. I have heard rumours that recycling/disposal costs are very high but have yet to find any companies that handle Lithium disposal. I believe there are 2 high temp incinerators the UK that can burn them. Also all these cars need software updates. Car manufacturers are not obliged to provide updates beyond the warranty period and the consumer rights act does not cover motor vehicles. Like millions of other drivers I shall be hanging on to my current vehicle for the forseeable future.
@anthonytube

The Ami is a useful tool and affordable in a sea of over priced cars. It just was much cheaper two years ago sadly! It's been built with the previous €5.5k retail price so we see no improvements with the higher price tag. Yet I can't complain as I bought one! Now I have several cars inc a Fiesta (My mums old ca as sadly she passed away) and Mum paid £6k for it in 2016 and still worth £5k now and it's a great car. The Ami is so much cheaper (well ignoring the purchase price that destroys my argument!!) as I have no tax, minimal insurance and even with high electricity it costs about £8 a week doing the nursery run each day when my other car was about £30 a week just in fuel. That's still expensive for the Ami as others with a good tariff pay less that £1 to charge it when it costs me £2.50. If electricity was cheaper it would be much cheaper to run. You make a very important point. Imagine the near future with thousands of bricked, defunct electric cars everywhere with mountains of batteries to be recycled? It's going to be a messy business and no-one is giving thought to this only thinking electric cars are the future as they are clean and environmentally friendly. I am wise enough to understand the pro's and con's and sadly electric cars do at this point in time have a dirty secret! Best wishes Anthony
@BillyBanter100
@BillyBanter100 Жыл бұрын
@@anthonytube Admittedly small EVS are fairly cheap to charge at present and carry no car tax. Apart from the recycling issue, most car users do not have driveways so have to use public charge points. The EVs owners in my local area have drives or garages so can charge their EVs from home. I think EVs have a future if 1. Small portable non lithium based batteries can be developed. 2. Solar charging panels incorporated into car design to minimise dependancy on the nation grid. 3. Affordable EVs need to introduced as the vast majority of car owners do not have upwards of £40K for a decent EV ether purchased outright or on HPI. Back to my own car It is ULEZ and car tax exempt. It performs well for what I bought it for mostly local journeys and a few long treks per year. It's a shame Ford and other companies did not develop their successful small cars as EVs and went instead for the large overpriced luxury segment. Lastly in the 45 years I have been driving I have never know public confidence so low when it comes to replacing their current vehicles and who can blame them with the current high cost of living.

I think so! Okay so electricity is pretty high now so costs 2/3 more to fully charge (about £2.40 on out tariff) but really during warranty most things will be covered. Jeez, sound like a true French High Quality Product, although exactly the same vehicle can be purchased from Opel which since a few years is now Peugeopel of course... The French really are known to be Createur Automobile Inferieur... and this piece of crap shows exactly where the French are good at. Astonishing that there are still people purchasing these inferior French products at all... And yet they actually do... and to make this story even more unbelievable: although the French have this reputation of making inferior products by choice, because if they really want to they actually can make very good products, Large respectable German companies like Mercedes and BMW have been purchasing French motors from Peugeot and Renault to put for years in their entry level small cars like the Mercedes A Class, the B class and even the C class and in the BMW 1 series, 2 series and 3 series... How...? What...? Why...? Really..? Yes they do, even today they do. So chances are grand that your BMW or your Mercedes really is driven by a French engine (Non-top quality) and Non-German engineering. Just so you know...
@anthonytube
@anthonytube Жыл бұрын
I hate to agree but I guess I must as this is largely true with regards to quality but I do think the French brands are MUCH better than years ago. However the Ami is very basic and quality is lacking. You are right PSA power everything from Mercedes, Mini, BMW and variations of the Renault TCE engines are in the Mercedes and the Dacia brand. There's no such thing are uniquely engineered cars anymore although Mazda still doing their best to do their own thing. Platform and engine sharing is the business model sadly! Best wishes ! Anthony

@@anthonytube Yes indeed, but really...? Out of all countries available making cars...Mercedes Benz and BMW picked France...? Now that's astonishing, especially when you are in to the Automotive industry and you therefor know their reputation better then anyone else, but yet they did choose France and their crappy products..., where they could have chosen High Quality Japanese or Korean alternatives, or If it had to be European; how about Rotax (Austrian Engine manufacturer) or VM, and get your gearboxes from ZF or even the Australian company of Borg-Warner for drive trains, or even Tremec... you name it, but no...Those respectable German car manufacturers chose PSA Peugeot and Renault.... Now what does that say about the respect these companies have for their primer clientele..? --> thinking they are actually purchasing a True High Quality German product, "Made in Germany"

@@dutchyjhome Money talks my friend! You are 100% right. I learned that Citroen are now using Chinese auto gearboxes for the C5 and it was impressive when I drove it. I think the industry (PSA/Stellantis as a prime example) is prioritising profit margins and most legacy brands are cutting corners especially the germans. (Drum brakes on a £70k car?) A VW or Mercedes is now just a shadow of what they used to be. Actually with the Ami Valeo did all the engineering on the drive train and it's very good I have to say... It's smooth and linear. It could have been perfect! :-)

It was a better solution for Mercedes to use Renault because creating small motors would be too expensive. Anyways Renault is not the problem, BMW are known to use disposable garbage pieces in their motors. You're a good man. You have legitimate complaints about the build quality but you're not a 'grump' or damning the vehicle (almost called it a "car") to perdition. The vehicles are built in Morocco and I don't know whether this says anything about the workers or the final inspection team but Citroen has a duty to their customers to build a car at least as good as what they are charging for it. Some of the problems like the dirt getting up and over the wheels into the more critical parts of the vehicle call out for wheel shrouds. Fitting problems and poor quality control don't bode well for the success of the vehicle. Shame because I fell in love with this little bugger as soon as I saw it.🥲

Very kind! I fell involve with it also; I just loved the design and thought it would be a hoot! It really is a hoot but the production quality is poor... Some of the welding on the frame above my head is really poor and messy. However it does suit a purpose and I always look forward driving it! Let's hope Citroen will improve but to be honest I don't think they will. They will just churn them out and the majority will be used for ride sharing etc. Thanks again and best wishes! Ant :-)
