Some important things to know and be aware of when buying a Citroen Ami!

Your comment that it's cheaply built is accurate and fair, and I don't think any owners or potential buyers would be aggrieved by its (alleged) imperfections if - IF - the vehicle were also cheap to buy in the first place. £8,000 is a lot of money. Yep. Even in 2023. Say it slowly: eight... THOUSAND... pounds... Oh, I know EV drivers have been cleverly conditioned by the motor industry (desperate to recoup the steady income lost from oil-hungry, main dealer-friendly ICE cars) to believe that £25,000 or £45,000 or £60,000 is a normal price to pay for their personal transport, and the various lease or never-never rental or whatever agreements delude people into thinking that 'easy monthly payments' are the answer to all their problems. "Buy another phone! Your current one's almost a year old! Buy a new car! Buy a boat! Buy a huge motor-caravan! You're special! You deserve it! Buy a plane! Rent a helicopter! Live a millionaire's lifestyle one month at a time!!! You're worth it!!!" Good grief. Doesn't anybody look at the bottom line any more? The point is, people now expect to pay a lot of cash for their dash, but they also expect to get adequate value for their (monthly) money. Quality. Reliability. The Ami doesn't seem to live up to its price tag. If it could be bought cheaply enough (imported from China for, say, £2,500 and then fettled, rebuilt and re-engineered via a Haynes Manual and lovingly fitted with upgraded bits and bobs to suit our atrocious roads and weather conditions) I could see it acquiring cult status as a fun project for auto-nerds, rather like the Linux operating system: the scope for fiddling, customising and improving it is limitless, and many people spend more time tinkering than actually doing any work with it. But the base product needs to be cheap. In the case of Linux, the cost is £0.00. It's free. Yay. The Ami - with all its charm, quirks, faults and foibles - should cost a third of what it does. People would then feel happy about spending a few grand on parts and a few years of their free time turning it into a little sparkling gem. [You know: splash on the Waxoyl; break out the choccy Hobnobs; weld up some Binky brackets.🎵 Get the funk out...🤭] Paying £8,000 for an apparently unfinished vehicle just ain't right.

What you say, totally agree and it's not as if it's motorway legal, where I live we have many expressways, motorway access and slip roads. For the price they could have beefed it up a tad and increased speed a tad to make it more usable, of course not expecting long motorway journeys but for local short expressways that are 60Mph. But then It seems targeted at euro kids on a moped license so figures.

Actually it sounds from this like it's as big a pile of rubbish that the original Citroen Ami petrol car was back in the 1970s. Grossly underpowered, tacky interior, abominable de-misting, and very unsafe pulling out into fast traffic the wretched thing is going to be like the 2CV only worse - not enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding; engine could barely run a pencil sharpener. But as usual the French have managed to make something as ugly as possible - this new design has all the appeal of a kitchen pedal-bin. Well this review made me laugh so I had to like it

Hey there! I always suggest to go and see one and drive one. The way it drives (and the drive train Valeo produced is great) BUT there are just several flaws that many people have experienced. This is probably the best overview of the Citroen Ami. I wanted one for a city centre use. However, there are times, I need to go on a dual-carriage and 30mph, would be too slow. It is unfortunate as there is lot to like with the Citroen Ami. They are trying to force us to cycle, which is great for those who lifecycle works. However, for me a lightweight car such as the Citroen Ami, solves a lot of problems.
@anthonytube
@anthonytube Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I am glad it helped you a little! Yes it's the major issue, making sure you can avoid fast flowing roads as we both know the driving public are a speedy, uncaring bunch! Despite the higher electricity costs the Ami is MUCH cheaper to run than my cars... I think before the huge energy hikes it would have costs less than £1 for around 40 miles (in nice weather). The Ami is a design piece love it or hate it and it's so much fun to drive. Sadly as many Citroenists will say, it's very flawed and next to useless in cold and wet weather but when moderate it's brilliant and as you say it solves a lot of problems and provides fun, inner city transportation. Thanks again! Anthony :-)

Thanks for the vid. Very informative. I suppose we cant expect too much at the price point. Its a shame there’s nothing else until you triple the purchase price. You are right! I think the Ami was okay at around £5k but £8k is a lot for this level of quality IMO. We need more Chinese mini EV's but hopefully will come soon. I'm not sure why the 'West' is so far behind Asia. It's true, we all need more small vehicles not HUGE SUV's! It seems major western car makers want to prioritise lower volume large, expensive ev’s over high volume, cheap, small ev’s because they can make more money on them. I think the EU and U.K. governments are complicit in this by not certifying Chinese mini ev’s for sale here. If they were really serious about reducing co2 emissions from vehicles then they would allow them.

Here in France with an eco grant, I think the Ami is around the 6,000€ mark. Which is cheap compared to the price of the other "sans permis" cars... Aixam... Ligier etc. Those are more around the 10-13,000€ price range. My van is sans permis and bought second hand, that wasn't cheap either for what it is. I have had an ami for the last six months, seems like they have fixed most problems now. It’s not a proper car in terms that you can’t do everything you can do in a normal car.. but that’s not why you should by one. It’s a fun run around and great for a cheap second car to pop to the shops and especially if parking is difficult. It’s also better in the day and in fair weather. It’s a low cost car with minimal extras.. it’s basically a golf buggy with a roof and doors. But so much fun and I live it !!

Yes I love the Ami and ir's so much fun to drive (3000 miles in 10 months) but sadly the production is inconsistent and many issues persist, I've driven several now. It's basic and is a quadricycle after all BUT basic should not mean badly built. It shouldn't leak and once you've got through winter in your Ami you will find some other things that are frustrating. However despite it's flaws I love it. The main issue for me was the truly diabolical customer service from Citroen! Cheers !

No your right, and the guy doing this video has done a good job showing people the flaws, ours doesn’t seem to leak as we get heavy rain in the north of Portugal and it’s done well. Visibility is an issue when it steams up for sure. We did have a large delay on receiving the car ( 3 months ) but I can see where people have chosen it as their daily town or city car that these issues could be annoying. But the major faults in the video I think have been resolved? Not sure if that’s for everyone

Thanks for the video. I have toyed with the idea of an Ami, but just didn't think it was worth the UK price. Now seeing the limitations in your video I think it's definitely not worth the UK price point. It's not a car and not been built to the same standards and looks like absolutely no rust proofing. Not an issue in the south of France, but not so great after a couple winters with salt on UK roads.

Had my Ami 6 months, no. 186 in the country, just short of 1k miles, other than the range issue and reduced power in very cold weather I have none of the issues you list. Mine does not even steam up, no water ingress, no lock problem, she's been great. Can't see any problem with the brake position, indicator or wiper, not experiences stones and dirt flying about. Watching your video before buying might have put me off which would have been a real shame
@anthonytube
@anthonytube Жыл бұрын
That would have been a real shame and as I say many times I love the Ami and always suggest going to check one out as believe it or not I am a fan... I bought one after all. However you are a very lucky boy as so many people have had issues. Mine are so bad, Citroen are replacing it! The leak would contribute to steaming up but again many people have this steaming up issue so I can assume you aren't out it very cold and wet weather? Maybe you keep yours in a garage over night? Locks a common fault, they did a recall and had one replaced. They did an early recall to fit 1/2 liners as locks were failing on earlier Amis but on mine grit still going up there. If you live where I do with lot's of gravel, grit and open pot holes the stuff goes everywhere and you can hear the stones pinging around. I hopefully got a Friday edition but still love driving it. The Ami is charming but the build quality is poor. My belt starting squeaking on take off now and another chaps suspension strut broke apart. Things can of course go wrong but I've had many faults but hoping the next one will not leak. Best wishes

I am sorry to have a downer on the Ami! I think it's hard to compare as very few things are made like they used to be. Truthfully the Ami drives great, smooth and grippy but the overall 'construction' is sub par really. it's essentially a thin tube frame wearing plastic panels. The roof sections are essentially glued on top of the frame. I don't think with normal use (in the UK at least) the Ami will last beyond a few years. I'd love one of these, they look so much fun and I think I'd actually get out of the house, but 8K for something that can't even get me to my job (20 Km) because all the roads are 50Kmph is a though nut to crack, they are coincided a danger on the road here and everyone hates them because they can't reach the speed limits or regular roads. Not to mention the safety. 8K IS cheaper than the competition, but I find it 4K too much, as the competition (like Ligier) has second hand minicars with a much better build quality of that price, however those are always diesel ofc. They do look lovely in France as the channel 'Me and Mon AMI' proves where winters are very mild to non existing and it only rains once every few months, instead of the colder winters and nearly always raining situation in Belgium (and UK and we have similar weathers).

Great video. I was intrigued by these. but this has not made me want to investigate them any further. Citroen seem to have employed every cost-saving measure possible, at the expense of usability. As another person has said, if I do decide to 'go electric' the main contender for modest cost is the i-Miev which is vastly better equipped and can actually go on the motorway. An essential for me, even if it's only for 15-20 miles.

@C Ayres Make no mistake the Leaf is a fantastic car! A lot of car for the money and they're a solid build quality. Lot's of room for family, friends, baggage and pets! Neither the Twizzy nor the Ami are practical. They're toys. We also have an e208 GT Pemium and it's fun, but you soon realise how small that car is with little boot space... so the Ami is a joke. I wouldn't carry my child in an Ami death trap. Not that I have kids. 😅 Be aware that at motorway speeds and in the winter your range will suffer in ANY EV. Rule of thumb... the 4 hours of cheap rate charging on Octopus Go will get you about 70miles of real driving per day at around 3p per mile all year round. I'm on the pre price hike tariff, which is slightly cheaper at 2p. From around 2018 onwards the Leaf (newer shape) has 100,000miles or 8 year battery warranty. So, I calculate my cost per mile of the vehicle over that 100,000. My 2021 62kWh Leaf Tekna was bought 6 months old with 5000 miles for £25k (£40k new). So my total running costs are 25p car + 2p electricity per mile. That's cheaper than a Fiesta diesel! ...more than half the price of catching the bus! It's nice to have a brand new car... but it's not worth losing £15k in 6 months! Buy second hand. There are newer shape Leafs on the market for a steal. Shop around. I stole mine. It was the cheapest non accident car from a reputable dealer in the country. It's worth a day out fir a deal. Try and get the rear view mirror screen and suspension tweek which are optional extras. I'd definitely recommend the Tekna for trim level over the Acenta. The Acenta seats are nasty. It's worth paying the extra. You'll need and appreciate the 360° cameras and blind spot monitoring because visibility is poor in any EV. The e-pedal (one foot driving) is amazing. The Level 2 autonomy is great for motorways and dual carriagways (I usually turn steering assist off tho as it drains battery) Really consider the bigger 62kWh battery. You get a heavier but faster car than the 40kWh as it has a bigger electric motor. 160kW in the 62kWh instead of 100kW in the 40kWh. You'll appreciate the bigger battery when you're travelling long distances even if only a few times per year. I'm at 40,000 miles and still at 100% battery capacity. The question to ask is how often the battery has been rapid charged... regular rapid charging is bad! Stick to 7kW and even better is to use the granny cable if you don't need much charge. Ideally charge to about 80% every night (unless you have a long journey). Try not to let the battery go less than 20%. This way you'll be doing more driving and less time charging. You need to keep the battery between 20% and 80% for longevity too! Only occasionally going out of those parameters is best. The 62kWh does a real 70 miles within those parameters. The 40kWh battery will do about a third less. I have to travel 60 to 70 miles per day. The 40kWh battery was not an option for me because charging at a public charger is daylight robbery. It's at least 9 times more expensive than Octopus cheap night rate. Be aware... the older 30kWh Leaf is only going to do around 30 miles between 20 and 80%. 24kWh even less. Some older models have had new 40kWh battery upgrades. Just don't buy older than 2015!

To catch a bus costs more than double that! Would I swap my e208 for 4 of these.. No thanks 🤣 The basic e208 costs 3 of these. A 4 yr old e 208 GT is 2 of these. The e208 is a pretty and practical car. You stay dry and your belongings are a lot safer in an e208. It's a nicer environment, better looking and a comfortable functional car! I really don’t get the economics of something like this. If you only have a small budget just get something second hand. I know it is nothing alike but I bought a second hand 2010 Toyota Avensis estate 3 years ago. £1900 for the 2.2l diesel. £210pa to tax and less than that to insure. Say £400pa for repairs to play it safe. 40mpg and 170bhp. 6000 miles pa so £1050 pa in fuel. 3 years ownership cost of approx £7390 all done in quiet comfort with heated seats, air con and cruise control, not limited to 28mph and happy to sit on the motorway all day with 5 people and a weeks worth of luggage in the boot or move a fridge freezer etc. This is not even a very favourable comparison as you could get a much cheaper to run smaller second hand car that would still be much nicer than the Ami. I would love a little EV and I really like the idea but if your budget is tight I don’t get it at all.

Another typical Citroen, they look good from a distance but move close to them and the shoddy build quality is easy to find, nothing fits as it should, they rattle and creak, some parts will split and fall off both inside and out. Yes i was stupid enough to buy one many years ago, but like a lot of cars from France or Italy they are a nightmare to own, and depreciate at an alarming rate, used car dealers avoid them, you can find them in the auctions for very low bids.
