Citroen Boot Torch - How to repair / upgrade to LED

In this video I show how to upgrade the rechargeable boot torch found in many Citroen cars, to LED lights.
Using LED's instead of the incandescent lights gives you brighter, more efficient light that lasts much longer.

I just bought a 2012 Citroen Berlingo Multispace xtr and wondered where this flash light goes ? I have a space on my tailgate that is missing a plastic part or is it the torch ?

There's no need to take the lamp apart to replace the second bulb. It's much easier to pop the transparent cover - just use a wide flat-tip screwdriver to lift the cover at the back of the lamp.

Knee-Cola thanks for the tip! In my torch the back lense was so hard to pry that I was afraid I'll break it. Also, you have to open up the torch if you want to replace the batteries, so I guess it might be helpful to show that.. but anyway, thanks for pointing that out!

M. Green you are correct - replacing batteries is not a bad idea! Thanks for showing how to do that! PS It's a good thing you're using the plastic prying tool to avoid damaging the casing. I just bought a whole set from eBay and I'm loving it!

Hello, I don't have a link because it was a few years ago, but you can go to ebay or AliExpress and search for "3v-18v PR13.5S LED". it should give you similar light bulbs. Just make sure to select white color. Good luck and thanks for watching!

There arw 2 bulbs, front and side. You can search for these codes: Front light - "3v-18v PR13.5S LED" Side light - "T10 W5W LED"

nino -aka there are multiple kinds of interior lights. Which do you refer to? The front overhead? Back overhead? Courtesy lamps? Some of them are already LED and some are faded (LEDs can't be faded easily)

I have a Grand C4 Picasso. I have to do it too. But the batteries have to be replaced too. It is a 10 years old car.

I put links (in the description) to similar LEDs that should work. The batteries are the standard Ni-MH rechargeable. You can look for "AAA Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries" on eBay / Amazon or your local supplier. of course, the known brands should have higher quality batteries. I hope it helps!

I think that AAA Li-ion is better idea, don`t u think? NiMH have a memory effect.

wsip82 you must use the same type of batteries that are in your torch. Ni-Mh and Li-ion have different charging methods, so using an incompatible battery can destroy your torch, or batteries or cause serious fire. ALWAYS USE THE SAME BATTERY TYPE AS THE ONE YOU REPLACE! if you're not sure, take the old battery with you to the store and ask the seller for a proper replacement

I'm not an electrical engineering expert, but why wouldn't you simply get the proper led for the torch? They're quite cheap

@@MrGreenMakesStuff Ah yes I will, but the batteries give out 3.6 volts, And i'd worry I was going to burn out the led bulb, luckily a diode will drop the voltage to 3 volts

It's so much easier to do than the way you have.. the lenses just lifts off on both .. no need at all to dismantle the torch like you have

Paul Brooks you're right, but somehow the back lense was so hard to pry out on my torch that I was afraid I'll break it. Also, you have to open up the torch in order to replace the batteries, so I guess it might be helpful to show that.. but anyway, thanks for pointing that out!

I used a stiff kitchen knife and lifted down the long edge of the boot light and just used my fingers to snap of the torch end

my led bulb isn't working. first I thought It was the batteries, bought a new set of batteries, and it still didn't light. with a multimeter I tested and the power was there. the thing is that I used the torch 2 times since the led upgrade. 2 times for 15 seconds

Hi, are the contacts clean? Can you check the bulbs outside the torch? Just connect them to some batteries. These are rechargeable batteries (of the old NIMH type), to me it sounds like either a defective bulb, or something with the charging circuitry that prevents the batteries from being charged.

Does the torch side light works when you open the trunk? If not, then it's probably the circuit or fuse leading to the trunk. If it lights up when in the trunk, then I would try replacing the rechargeable batteries inside the torch. Good luck!

These are rechargeable Ni-mh batteries I'm pretty sure they're AAA. See at 6:00 in the video

I don't think they're a requirement. I think they should be though! The concept is absolutely brilliant! But of course the torch ought to be delivered with good LEDs to start with, and be easier to open. BTW, a tip, especially in case you use a W5W LED bulb that's not shining in only one direction like in this video: Paint the surrounding plastic interior of the boot light white or silver. It will certainly reflect more light outwards than the original black plastic. I suppose Citroën couldn't afford spending a few cents on a reflector behind the boot light bulb, so most of the light from the puny incandescent bulb was lost. Same thing with the wall-mounted light on the other side of the boot (in the C5 at least), and the registration plate lights, though IIRC those were at least light gray and not black inside.
