I am grateful for the different ideas to stop the water leaking into the boot of my C1. However after trying all the various methods e.g. taking off the rear light clusters and sealing the holes where the wire goes through and also the rear centre stop lamp. The water still poured in. I eventually took off the seal around the back boot opening and cleaned it out, it was full of mould where the seal went over the metal edge. Having cleaned it thoroughly I replaced it and the water still poured in. I took the seal off again and put a bead of clear silicone all the way inside the seal where it clips onto the car body. I placed it back and it is now completely sealed - no more water . What I believe was happening was that the water got under the seal and found its way between the two pieces of metal which is where the seal covered it then ran into the boot from various folds and openings below the boot ledge. If you've tried everything else then try this and let me know if it works.

Hi Graham, I used to engineer door seals for Rover and you are quite correct. Water can track over the flange via the carrier. Wind and road noise too. All Rover's (and JLR's these days) seals have a bead of 'mastic' within the carrier to seal it to the flange - in much the same way you've done with silicon. I'd suggest you do the same with your door seals. I've just done this with my Saab's boot seal as part of my crash repair. Good job

Thank You so much for this video. I have a C1. I love the car except the leaking boot! Every time it rains the boot mat is soaking wet and then it takes days to dry out. My Husband used sealant on the rear high level brake light as shown in your video. We had really heavy rain last night and the boot was completely dry this morning!! The windscreen would have frost on the inside when frosty due to amount of moisture inside the car. So pleased this has finally been sorted, thank you.

Thank you so much for this! Very clear instruction on how to track down the leak and fix it! I got a second hand C1 which turned out to have a bad leak in the boot, took it back to the dealer who 'fixed it' - honestly think they just dried out the boot - Then had the seal replaced at my garage £££ and it still leaks. I will try your other suggestions and hopefully one will work. Thank you again - I live in hope now, lol.

Glad it helped! Since making this, i've also learned about the vents that are behind the bumper. They need sealing and you have to remove the bumper. There's also a new seal for the brake light now: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJSakopsoJqhrNE

Great explanation. You forgot the vent holes behind the bumper. There is a foam sealing too which is totally inadequate. I replaced it with sanitary sealing. This was my 80% leakage. Rest is probably left lights or top brake light.

My leaking C1 was caused by the high level brake light. After watching multiple videos and reading multiple forums I mucked around with the hatch seal and rear lights for a day before I even considered the brake light. Nobody seems to think the brake light is a problem - but it absolutely was in my case.

The foam between my rear light clusters and the bodywork had completely perished, so I doubled up the foam seal strip. I also ran a bead of silicone around the base of it to make double sure. Great video.
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's not the best foam in the world. The only problem with using silicon is that you might have to destroy the new foam next time you need to change a bulb. I'm currently looking for suitable LED bulbs to do a complete cluster conversion, then it [probably] won't matter if it's fully sealed.
@SuperMozzman
@SuperMozzman 4 жыл бұрын
@@CycloneCyd I only used silicone around the base where the new seal adheres to the bodywork, just to help keep it in place and add another layer of waterproofing - the top just squishes against the light cluster assembly.

Hi Kate, Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Welcome aboard. Is yours a 5 door? And was it the rear door glass that fell out? Came detached from it's hinges?
@katewc
@katewc 6 жыл бұрын
@@CycloneCyd yes it is a five door :) it was the back side windows that fell off the hinges (the glue just disintegrated) unfortunately one fell off when I was driving and smashed so I had to claim off my insurance and ring autoglass to get a replacement, then the night of the window being fixed I went outside to look at it and found my other one had fallen off! I just glued that one back on with some windscreen sealant and it seems to have worked but last week I got a recall letter from Citroen about the windows falling off. It's a bit late now, Haha!
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 6 жыл бұрын
@@katewc Hello again Kate, thought as much. I was going to tell you about the recall. I'd say take it in for the recall action anyway. That way your second window will be fixed properly and you won't have the lack of recall work for someone to knock you down with should you ever sell the car. The horn beeping thing could be the clockspring behind the steering wheel. There are several C1 breakers on the Facebook forums so a 2ndhand one shouldn't be hard to find.

Cheers mate good video. My main leak was the middle brake light, I removed it cleaned off the old gasket applied a beed of black silicon,fitted it back to the car cleaned off the excess silicon beautiful job. Oh shit I had forgot to connect the lights plug what a Donkey. So today I removed the light again, it was a bit of a struggle getting it out ,but with the help of a credit card inserted between the light and the car I managed .After cleaning of the old silicon which is a B of a job , refitted it cured . My secondary leak is on the door gasket at the bottom 150mm to the right of the catch .When I lifted that section of seal it looks like water is tracking under the gasket and over the lip where the door seal fits. I put some grease on this and refitted the seal to see if that is indeed the case . Will let you know. Have a nice Christmas . Andy
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thanks for recounting your experience. Who amongst us has never done that eh? You can't learn from mistakes you don't make, lol!! Do you mean water is tracking around the seal carrier / body flange interface? better quality seals on more expensive cars have a mastic sealant deep in the carrier to prevent that. Take the seal off all round and use a very fine nozzle to put silicon bead dep in the carrier and put back.
@74HC04
@74HC04 6 жыл бұрын
The C1/107 seal does have a white mastic sealant in the groove of the seal - where it contacts the bodywork of the car. It's a kind of putty-like substance. I have two broken seals in my garage to prove this - one of which is the original from my late 2011 C1. If I was to use grease, I would go for silicone grease to avoid damaging the EDPM rubber.

You are great! You have more knowledge as my Toyota workshop in Hamburg, Germany. There, they are idiots. I had this problem with water in my trunk in my Toyota Aygo a lot of times in the past 15 years. The only idea the guys at the workshop had was to replace the rubber that encloses the trunk hood for two times. With no effect. To everything bad I had the feeling that at the 2nd time where I paid for a new rubber I could swear they charged me with the amount for this work, but the rubber was not exchanged. The rain comes in on my (5 door '09) Aygo. It looks wet under the seals on the back windows, and the rain then drips down onto the rear floormat. However, the carpet in the boot feels dry to the touch. It looks like it's coming in through the seals somehow, although plan B is to tip water over the doors while someone is sitting in the car, to identify for certain how it's coming in. Other than checking the back windows are fully closed (!) do you have any suggestions on anything I can check / do to resolve this, other than taking it to a garage? It looks like the recall for the windows has been done years ago. (My skills are somewhat lacking when it comes to anything other than very basic car maintenance, but I really want to learn more of how to take care of my Aygo rather than always paying someone else to do it!!)

It might be coming in round the seal carrier rather than being a contact issue to the glass. I haven't done a video on this subject specifically for the C1 yet, but I have covered it in a Saab video. IIRC the boot seal chapter is chapter 4 in this kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZrXdn2uh7iXkKs. Watch this section carefully then do exactly the same on your boot seal. If you need a silicon gun, this is good value from the nice people at Everbuild (mine is over 20 years old!) amzn.to/36I4p31 and their general purpose sealant is top notch and good value amzn.to/3nwZZD2. @CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 4 жыл бұрын
On the OE production lines they use spray booths that put out a fine mist (sprayed at 2bar was the old Rover spec). The water contains a UV dye. It's nearly impossible to do on a DIY basis at home (I'll have a think about it though, see if I can come up with anything). Anyway up, I've been following forums for decades and the empirical data would suggest the third brake light is the most common leak, followed by rear lights. I've got a couple of ideas for the main boot seal and am waiting on material to test them before I do a video. Oh, one area I didn't cover in this video (but will in the future) is the rear air extract vents, but this requires bumper removal. I also have to be careful: the C1 is the wife's car. Hi there Fist Of Blur Leath25, thanks for watching and welcome aboard. May be consider getting your son to subscribe. Learning to look after a car well is a valuable skill best learned from an early age. the car in the video is my wife's. I doubt there is the remains of a broken key in the barrel, as these keys are quite substantial. Maybe there's dirt in there causing a pin to stick. In the first instance I'd suggest spraying a good jet of brake cleaner into the barrel. Repeat twice more at 1 minute intervals. Follow this up with a blast of penetrating oil. Give it a few moments to work in and try putting the key in again, waggle a bit if needed. If this is successful I'd suggest removing the key barrel to give it a more thorough cleaning and lube. Clean through with brake cleaner and then lube with white grease (spray white grease is just the job). If you have any general purpose lithium grease in a tin, inject it into the barrel with a syringe. Work the barrel with the key. If this doesn't do the job, come back. I've got an idea for how you can get into the boot, but need to investigate on wife's car first.

I particularly appreciated the advice on checking the boot seal for leaks - you have included some techniques I have never heard of through the owners forums (on which most of my posts are about leaks). Unfortunately, the improved boot seal still does allow a little water to seep between the glass and rubber - even after I pushed the latch as far back as it goes. Mine is leaking again a year after replacing the seal and I am currently resorting to various silicone based potions to condition the rubber and repel the water. After 6.5 years of C1 ownership, boot leaks may soon finally defeat me!

Maybe try my suggestion of building up the glass surface with duct tape. Gorrilla tape is excellent for this. You could also make the seal firmer by putting neoprene cord through the length of the seal, probably something like 6mm diameter. Are you sure it's not coming in round the seal carrier on the flange? You could put a fine bead of sealer deep into the carrier before fitting it to the flange. These seals are only designed to be fitted once, and never go on as well if removed and refitted.
@74HC04
@74HC04 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks again, @@CycloneCyd! I have read an owners forum post where someone cut open the seal (at the join) and fed in a (lubricated) flexible pipe to stiffen it up. The neopreme cord idea sounds even better! I may well try building up a layer of tape on the glass next. I am sure the water isn't coming in around the flange as I have been keeping the back seats unlatched and clambering in the boot (every time it rains!) so that I can watch the path of the drips. As I said in another comment, there definately is bead of mastic deep in the carrier but thanks for advising that it's only designed for a single fitting - I didn't know that before. Thank goodness I garage the car at night, I would have lost the plot otherwise! :D Many thanks again. I really appreciate the advice! :)
