My question is when you buy a citrus tree from a California nursery, how is that tree's rootstock kept disease-free?
@Fruitmentor2 жыл бұрын
Here are a couple of my articles (with embedded videos) that explain how the production nurseries avoid disease: fruitmentor.com/grafting-citrus-trees-chip-budding fruitmentor.com/growing-citrus-trees-from-seed When the production nurseries ship trees to retail nurseries pesticides are applied that avoid disease from feeding by infected Asian citrus psyllids. My understanding is that this protection lasts for 90 days and that any tree that remains at a retail nursery for more than 90 days is vulnerable to disease spread by psyllids.

One thing I don't get is that Dr. Vidalakis said self rooted trees are weak and have production issues... so where exactly does the rootstock come from to graft?
@Fruitmentor Жыл бұрын
The normal way is to grow them from seeds.

My first shoot of t-budding of citrus was broken,, can i get one more shoot from this bud? Or how many shoot produce from one single bud of citrus
@Fruitmentor4 жыл бұрын
Often there are multiple buds. It is possible that another one could grow, but I’m not sure how likely that would be.

Mr.Den I am Yagnesh Patel from Gujarat one of the state of India, On last 25th I mean on 25-8-19 I grafted 8 branches of big lemon to rootstock of 2 and half year seedless lemon, out of 8 six graft successful, now I want to know can I stop water after a month I mean from 15 October to 15 November to promote flowering on the same, is it advisable to stop water a newly grafted plant to promote flowering for fruiting..??
@Fruitmentor5 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend withholding water to a newly grafted plant.
@yagneshpatel59345 жыл бұрын
@@Fruitmentor ok thanks sir...but after how many months I can withhold water to promote flowering..??
@Fruitmentor5 жыл бұрын
I do not think that water needs to be withheld to promote flowering. Citrus will flower with good watering and fertilization. If you want to manipulate the timing of the flowering, you could withhold water and then induce flowering at the time you want, but it is hard on the tree. If you are going to do something like that, you might want to wait for some substantial growth on the graft.

Can fruits of grafting has problems for humans health doctors?
@Fruitmentor5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that I understand your question, but I will try to answer. Although huanglongbing is deadly for citrus trees and it makes the fruit of infected trees taste bad, the fruit from infected trees is not harmful to humans.

@Fruitmentor5 жыл бұрын
@@funnyworld459 That is no problem at all. The fruit will be OK to eat. Sometimes a fruit variety may taste bad or have poor texture if grafted to the wrong rootstock, but that would not be a health issue.

Is there a danger of minimising the diversity of Citrus genetics by propergating a narrow range of clean cloned bud wood?
@Fruitmentor3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think this would be an issue. Actually the diversity of citrus genes has already been reduced by humans selecting fruits that people like to eat. There are breeding efforts underway to combat disease using genes of wild varieties whose fruit is not as appealing. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nF7KZ5WZjZ1re8k
