Why does huanglongbing (citrus greening, HLB, Yellow Dragon Disease) spread so rapidly? UC Davis plant disease epidemiologist Dr. Neil McRoberts explains how the interaction between Asian citrus psyllids, liberibacter, and citrus trees causes this deadly citrus disease to spread so rapidly.

I am a scientist managing citrus HLB in North Indian Kinnow for the last 10 years and was travelling in California in April -May 2022 when I observed typical blotchy leaf symptoms of HLB in citrus trees in the Exeter area, I did not however see the Psyllid. We have revived thousands of acres of dying Kinnow orchards in North India using eco friendly methods without any chemical pesticides. We have NDA's with CRDF Florida and made presentations to the USDA and USEPA 5 years ago and are probably the first in the world with a solution for this disease with System which is proven in the field and laboratory. We have filed for and been granted patents in some countries including the US for our System.

Alright, what's the cure? Anything natural we can do to prevent this disease from infecting our citrus through the lil bugs? And is there still a threat if you have one lone citrus tree? Like it's not on a farm or anything, it's just in a backyard?

How to fight this disease naturally. And how to maintain a healthy citrus environment in nature. Note that this disease slows development. Thank you very much for the educational videos

You're welcome. I am glad that you enjoyed the video. Accidental spread of the disease by people is one of the main ways that the disease spreads. People can unknowingly spread it so easily by moving trees, parts of trees, or fruit. So education to avoid these accidents that spread the disease to new areas is important. Once the disease gets to a new area it is very difficult to stop it.

Question will growing a tree from seed that was infected by the disease will it not have some antibiotics that we can work with

Unfortunately that will not help. I did another interview that went into seeds from HLB-infected trees. You can watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHKklmuKo7VmnLM

Grew up on the Indian River in Florida. Never bought citrus because it was everywhere including my family’s yards, also citrus groves throughout the area. Not anymore, and it’s funny how California commercial industry hasn’t been affected but urban citrus has.

One of the big things that has greatly helped reduce the spread of the disease in California is the regulation of citrus nurseries. In Florida the citrus nurseries shipped infested trees all over the state from Miami and this spread the insect and the disease very rapidly. There are some indications that it may have started to get into commercial citrus, however. Early detection with dogs is not yet validated, but dogs recently detected the disease in Ventura County Farms: www.agalert.com/story/?id=13272

So the bacterium is passed to the plant when the nymphs are feeding or when the adults are feeding? Or both? I spotted a few ACP on my citrus trees, but they haven’t started to lay eggs, I’ve been manually removing the ones I see with neem Oil.
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 3 жыл бұрын
The main way that the disease spreads is when the adults feed. I think the nymphs may be able to infect also, but they can't move very far. If you haven't already seen it, you may enjoy my interview with Monique Rivera, an entomologist from UC Riverside: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4rOp3dmqpiUgLM

Rootstocks can be hard to obtain. I have had good results buying inexpensive trees from local reputable nurseries and grafting to them.

I would like to create a Portuguese channel, but I need to find funding for it. A Portuguese channel could potentially help not only people in Brazil who are dealing with HLB, but also help to avoid the spread of the Asian form of HLB from Brazil to Europe and Portugal. I am putting transcripts on my website, so for now you could try looking at the Google translate of the transcript: translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=pt&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fruitmentor.com%2Fcitrus-greening-hlb

is there any natural predator for this psyllid (HLB vector)?
@Fruitmentor

Yes. There are natural predators. There is a video showing one of them (Tamarixia) in my ant control playlist here: kzbin.info/aero/PLhQ24kASgttOBr9mMYEbYQv1yjBb8SVnR Also there is more discussion of them in my interview with entomologist Monique Rivera.

Easier said than done, Get rid of all citrus trees for 5 years and replant from seed and stop grafting or keep the trees small and in a sealed green house. Just 💡.

Can't we apply the same principle used in reducing mosquito population by releasing sterile male mosquitoes. What if we did this with the male psylids wouldn't the overall population be significantly reduced over time and hence reducing the spread of the dreaded citrus greening
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor Жыл бұрын
I’m no expert on this, but it seems that for some reason there are problems in the mass rearing of male Asian citrus psyllids. I found a paper here on some efforts to overcome some of the problems here: www.researchgate.net/publication/321038853_First_steps_in_the_development_of_the_sterile_insect_technique_as_a_control_tactic_for_the_Asian_citrus_psyllid_Diaphorina_citri_Kuwayama_Hemiptera_Liviidae Several years ago I heard of an effort by USDA scientists to breed psyllids that do not spread HLB. I haven’t heard anything about that lately.

Once a tree has citrus greening,problem solve??india
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor Жыл бұрын
In California they always cut the tree down as soon as citrus greening is detected so that the disease will not spread. I have heard of experiments in Florida where they put a tent over the tree to raise the temperature and kill the bacteria in the part of the tree above ground. It believe that it will come back from the roots, though. Unfortunately there are not any great solutions yet.
