I rode through this station on accident one day. I was on the downtown 6 train distracted on my phone and listening to music. I looked up and the doors were closed and the train was pulling away from the last stop which is Brooklyn Bridge City Hall. I heard already and the train passes through the old City Hall station and comes out on the uptown track at the Brooklyn Bridge City Hall station before. But I was terrified that the train could be taken out of service and just go to a train yard. But thankfully it just turned around. The station was really creepy in the dark but very beautiful. No one notice me on the train luckily because I believe you can get a $100 ticket if you get caught. But also I think it could be easy to fight because a lot of the train speakers are old and broken (especially the older trains with the orange seats). If the train is old and doesn’t have a digital map You might be able to get away with it if you play like you don’t ride the train and that the speakers weren’t clear. 😂 They also never announce the consequences of staying on a train after the last stop.I completely went thru the tunnel on accident. You technically shouldn’t stay on any train passed the last stop. But if you do, stay on the train and don’t try to exit until it pulls into a station or a train yard where you can exit safely. You may get caught and fined but it’s better than risking your life.

I've ridden through the loop a few times and on August 20, 2019 I got the chance to actually explore the station with the NY Transit Museum. It was a day that I'll remember forever. The subway conductors are very nice and if you ask them if they're just turning around they'll usually let you ride through the loop. I would absolutely never jump off a moving train to get into the station that way. If you're caught that is a massive fine and you're charged with trespassing. I'm about to begin employment with the Metro North Railroad as a coach cleaner. I've been a train fanatic all my life and I'm super excited for this amazing opportunity.

Also, WHY do we feel the need to keep "updating" things. This is beautiful! Who thought it was a good idea to "modernize" the subway tunnels? They could have maybe taken care of them and kept them up.
@caroeldot6 жыл бұрын
Robin Mahaffey completely agree with you! I think that if this station would still be functioning, none of these beautiful tiles would have been kept. Maybe they would have updated that too

It is sad that they let places like this rot! It is beautiful and I’m fascinated by the 1800’s and early 1900’s. The pneumatic station is amazing as well.

It won't be that way forever, the Retro Decade Revival Project is gonna give these stations a newly restored life.

What a waste, they should make this place a tourist attraction instead of forgetting it. PS. Beautiful architecture.

They're thinking about using it as an extension for the NY Transit Museum, but they would have to reroute the 6 train, among a host of other difficulties.

IMHO that´s nonesense. In Madrid there is also another historic station which was closed. It was transformed into a museum kzbin.info/www/bejne/enuYkql8g7WtmdE If you look at 2'56'' you`ll see that the tracks are still used by the local transit system. They buit some glass walls to prevent any accident.
@kirkreyes33684 жыл бұрын
It really has no use in the modern subway system. When the city closed it in 1945, the IRT had extended their trains from five to ten cars. This made embarking and debarking impossible. Further, the station wasn’t being used much, so it made more sense to close it down. The transit museum still conducts tours down there. Keep in mind, too, that the MTA still uses the line to double the five and six trains back around to Brooklyn Bridge, so its use purely as a museum is not a viable option.

This station can be re used. A gap filler system can be used. The gap filler system is manufactured by thyssenkrupp elevator INC. ThyssenKrupp is the same company that made moving platforms at south ferry and 14th street stations. They also specialize in passenger boarding bridges for airports and cruise terminals

The Van Horne station was an interesting mixture, same architecture as the City Hall, and it had the experimental pneumatic transit system, based on the Beach Transit of 1870. Sad thing is that there's nothing left of it.
@Mikebuster2 жыл бұрын
I don't know why I'm replying to an 8 year old comment but the van Horne station is a made up station from Ghostbusters 2. the Beach transit is what it was actually called.

This is that abandoned station in Manhattan after Brooklyn Bridge city hall. That station was used a short time. It was too short for the ten car R142a train so they had to shut it down around 1999.

Couldn't they just close off the tunnels and remake the station into a museum?
@kirkreyes33684 жыл бұрын
Not the way that the MTA uses it now. The loop is an effective way to double back the trains back uptown. The New York City Transit Museum does allow tours to the site, and such tours are sparing to prevent any vandalism, which is common in abandoned subway stations in New York.

Was City Hall afraid of an attack from the tunnel below?
@jdmifsud1410 жыл бұрын
They closed the station because 1. the newer trains at the time where longer and since the turn would leave a gigantic gap between the platform and train. 2. A station nearby called "brooklyn bridge-city hall" an express station got the majority of the riders. hence they later closed it off to the public. now the 6 train just uses it to turn their trains around after brooklyn bridge-city hall

They should never broadcast things like this. There's a certain element in NY that doesn't respect or appreciate things like this and would love to deface these facades with spraypaint and vandalism. Just let it stay hidden and this "element" of society won't know where it is and destroy it.
