As a french growing up watching "Nicky Larson", i totally skipped the french adaptation when it came out, thinking there was no way it would be any good. I saw it some months after release and was really surprised by how close it was from my childhood memory of this anime. The movie is also filled with tons of eastereggs from the 90s, easter eggs you can't understand if you are not french and not from the same generation. The fact that it caters that much to french public is probably why it is that hard to find it outside of France i guess.

I'm not french, but actually somehow the topic of City Hunter came up between me and my french teacher (who did grow up in france obv) and she was nuts about Ryo when she was young, and it really surprised me just how much of a cultural following it has, A french friend of mine even introduced me to the series itself.

You know, if City Hunter was released 10 years later, you know for a fact that they’d try to revive it with ANOTHER sequel series, where Ryo is a burned-out 40 year-old that is doing his missions just to pay off the alimony for the kid he had with one of his minor clients, maybe one of the foreign harem soldiers NGL, not the worst plot idea but it’d be a horrible City Hunter story

It kind of is a power up in that way. Because no matter how bad life gets, accepting defeat will always be several times worse. I don't know how far you have read into Berserk so you might not want to keep on reading if you are not up to date, but Guts is in a rough place currently with little to no reason to keep going.

The only bit of information I remember from City Hunter was a trivia fact I read over a decade ago. Apparently, the term "Hammer Space" was coined due to City Hunter. "Hammer Space" refers to a running plot device which stores unlimited amounts of anything. Other shows had similar things, but didn't have a catchy term for it, like that robot cat that did pull everything from his pocket. However, Kaori's ability to pull a comically large hammer out from anywhere in a series that ties itself loosely to realism did have that catchy term: "Hammer Space."

As a cheese eating degenerate myself, I'm glad you mentioned Nicky Larson. Phillipe Lacheau had a reputation for making really bad comedy movies. But he surprised everyone with this adaptation. The amount of respect for the original that you should see in *any* adaptation. But also the original french dub of the anime is legendary for being very unfaithful to the actual tone of the show, and when it did get serious, the VA still cracked up jokes because to them, animated series were obviously for children. And also the channel on which it was aired being old farts who don't understand Japanese anime or what type of shows they were buying in the first place. You wanna know something funny? They did the same thing with FIST OF THE NORTH STAR. But it's not good. Not at all. The VAs openly hated HnK.
@hilotakenaka

Did Nicky Larson stay true to OG City Hunter's tone, go more comedic, or find an in-between?
@alexrexaros9837
@alexrexaros9837 8 ай бұрын
@@hilotakenaka They didn't care. It's all a big comedy but it's infinitely more raunchy. Similar to Geezer or Redneck sex jokes. They completely missed all the cues and the tone of the series. The only times it did get serious was when there was an actual couple on screen. But the rest was never taken seriously at any point. Like imagine Titanic, but the whole film is an Adam Sandler comedy, with some sincere genuine attempts at romance sparsely put here and there. As its own thing, it's mesmerising or interesting, but as an adaptation, it totally missed the point. Surprisingly, the VAs adapted Cobra and it was completely true to the original. Literal translation with little deviation. Plus they actually gave the characters fitting voices. So I guess they just didn't like City Hunter. Same goes for Saint Seiya, which's adaptation is completely tone deaf, DBZ which was infamously botched and it wasn't funny, Fist of the North Star, turned into a parody of itself, Ranma 1/2, which dismisses all references to Japanese culture, etc.

ryo = the best and deepest manga/anime character ever. and btw, you get the relationship with ryo and kaori the wrong way just like many people do, you say that ryo doesn't make any moves because "he doesn't want to bang his best friend's sister" but that is absolutely not the case, in the first chapters of the manga clearly shows that ryo finds kaori attractive and want to have a shot, he's getting a hard on when he sees her, tries to sleep with her in the same bed, and there even a section where he was going to confess to her by just kissing her instantly and see what her reaction is. but as the story goes ryo drops these stuff, because he really starts to care about her and actually want her to stay out of the underground, and starts to hide his feelings, because if they were to have a relationship kaori would stuck in the underground with him and it's dangerous so ryo doesn't want this for her. so it's actually way deeper than what you said, kaori starts as just another woman for him but gradually become the most important person in his life.

Not even funny how much Hojo has turned his work into successfull franchises despite them being forgotten. Its kind of nuts to think Japan and anime as a whole has a bad habit of letting some of its more historically important anime/manga fall into obscurity. In the bright side the fans keep it alive if its good enough and the students of theanga authors do a good job of paying lip service or referencing there previous work. Kind of reminds me of the way puroresu works.

15:25 in city hunter the women actually look like adult women though I don't think putting anime girls in bikinis is the main problem for most people or showing nudity. The problem is when the same things happens to characters who look and or act a lot like children. The argument no she is an adult she just looks like a child or she is a 3000 year old demon can go wrong and get creepy very fast IMO.

Ryo is one of the BEST MALE character ever written. What makes him so great is that there is more depth than just a master roshi perv. I look at him like Majima from Yakuza. Just this character who has a lot of mental and emotional baggage that they just act like a clown to move on. At the end of the episode he always respects the woman of the week. Its all just an act. And what drives the series is when he lets go of that act and gets serious, especially when Kaori is in danger.

Nice to see another City Hunter retrospect on KZbin. Being a fan of pulpy adventure fares, this franchise is right up my alley. Got to see a huge chunk of the anime series, the manga, the anime movies and OVAs, the live action film and even that loose South Korean drama adaptation, which is ironically the biggest exposure the IP has gotten in Arabic speaking countries (I used to live in Egypt for context) unless anyone there remembers the Jackie Chan film since Jackie Chan movies are a big thing over there. I'm a fan of Hojo's other works like Cat's Eye (which I was exposed to way before City Hunter) and Family Compo. Also of note, there was another Hong Kong adaptation of the series called Mr. Mumbles that didn't use the title but is more faithful to he anime than the Jackie Chan film, right down to more characters from the series like Umibozu appearing in it and the actors actually looking like their anime counterparts. Side note on the Twitter vs fanservice part: I have some issue with how some anime use fanservice (like how many forgotten 2000s OVAs used it to the point it became obnoxious) but I have no issue with how City Hunter uses it and fanservice in anime in general is basically harmless but Twitter being Twitter needs a reason to fake outrage for anything and I mean ANYTHING, just recently some people on there have been going after anime/manga/Japanese games for including "woke pandering" elements like diverse characters or LGBTQ references (yes really), they even been going after Japanese creators like video game director/writer Kotaro Uchikoshi for including LGBTQ references in his games or mangaka Kamome Shirahama, author/artist of the bestselling manga Witch Hat Atelier for being "brainwashed by Western ideology" because the manga has diverse and LGBTQ characters, ignoring those things were in Japanese media BEFORE TWITTER WAS A THING. Basically, Twitter is full of dishonest morons making up fake outrage for likes. Also looks like your live action One Piece statement didn't age well.

My first exposure to City Hunter was through the French dub of the anime which used to air on Mangas, a French TV channel that specializes in anime. It was renamed "Nicki Larson" in French, but it was one of my favorite anime growing up. Ryo is one of the most fascinating characters in shounens, mainly because he is putting an entire farce that he's a pervert, so that Kaori doesn't end up falling for him, which happens anyway despite of his best efforts. Also in what universe does a man like Ryo not score with the ladies lol?

I love the Angel Heart anime, it absolutely WRECKS me emotionally and that is a sign of a great show to me. The live-action was alright. I watched Nicky Larson movie but the subtitle file I found was slightly off. Still, yes, it was very enjoyable.

So.... dark twist about Jackie Chan the dude has had allegations thrown at him for sexual relations with minors now granted these came out in peak MeToo era so who knows on the other hand Chan himself has admitted that in his early days as a movie star in Hong Kong he fucked alot of prostitutes which considering Asia is well know for its underage sex trafficking where you have sex tourists going there to avoid laws does raise a few eye brows so the Kaori being a little girl thing in the HK adaptations could be a bit of a mask off moment.... or it could be all bullshit MeToo accusations are a rabbit hole of guess whos the bigger liar

I wanna point out that the french have two and three story comic book stores chock full of western comics and manga, city hunter was a stand out for the time along with fist of the north star since right around that time you had movies like mad max and the action movie craze of the 80s. Goes to show the french model of selling comics or marketing foreign one's like manga in general really works.

City Hunter was one of my first anime back when Animax was still around 2010. My mind was blown with anime and the various stories that took place with so much effort and love put into it. Then came City Hunter. A ballsy womanizer failing so hard to get laid but being the object many fall for in the end. A story that didn't shy away from the darkness of that part of the society and the ramifications. I fell in love. Not gonna lie, this and HxH funnily enough two series with the Hunter moniker made me look for more nuanced stories. My dad started watching anime with me after seeing the shenanigans. I think that's why he thought anime was mostly sexual jokes with the occasional badassery. Whoops.
