When boaters hit Miami’s waters for Memorial Day weekend, there are some spots that they won't be able to visit.

Don’t let this be turned into Cuba. The city shouldn’t punish the many for the actions of the few…. With all the environmental funds they take in they should do their jobs and just enforce the laws that have been on the books for ever and hold the litter bugs accountable… That’s what used to be done when this was a civilized society.

As a boter for over 45 years I completly support this descion. There is nothing worst than having the people that enjoy our waters the most be the sole responsibles for trashing our islands and bay. I rather this type of meausre than seeing so many irresponsible people that don't appreciate how lucky we are to have our natural resources. Hopefully this will raise awareness and consciousness, specially for the boat owners and captains who are ultimately responsible for the safety and behavior of their guests. My personal view when being on the water is to leave with more trash than what I come with. I carry extra trash bags to take all trash that I find even if it is not my own and I teach my kids the same. That is the legacy I strife to leave behind.

The video shows the garbage cans that the City / County has had on those islands for years. They collected the garbage every Monday. That told the boaters that there is garbage pickup service on the islands, so many left their garbage bags there. But what about the responsible boaters that don't litter? Why is it OK to ban them from the islands? Why was there no public meeting or public hearing before closing the islands to everyone? Why is it possible for the police to enforce an island closure, but not inform and enforce the new "leave no trace" policy? It's very easy to take away a personal freedom, as long as it's someone else's personal freedom.

Set up solar powered live cameras. I’m sure citizens and local environmental activists would monitor them.

If what they are saying is true about Biscayne Bay being an economic engine, the city should manage those Islands just like any other city parks. They should be monitored by FWC, Police, and Park rangers. The Islands are not much larger than some city/state parks. Because of their proximity to fragile waterways, it makes even more sense to allocate funds to regularly monitor them. This would naturally cut down on the amount of trash so that less money is spent collecting trash and money is spent properly maintaining the tourist hot spots the right way to begin with. The Islands were not properly monitored from the beginning and that is what has allowed the trash levels to get to this point. So, at what point do you think they should have started managing the Islands better?

Amazing how about people managing themselves better and being responsible and picking up their own garbage and taking it with them can you manage that thought?

@@OmarLopez-yh2lx Sure, I've been picking up after myself since day one. My parents taught me to change my own diaper even before they taught me how to use the pot so I wouldn't need them. But as a student of history, I know that getting everyone else to pick up after themselves is impossible.

How about actually enforce the law and give tickes? The bay has fwc and each city has several boats in the water. I boat every week, unfortunately if there's no consequences ppl will not do the right thing and pack their trash with them.

Perhaps there's a similar situation happening in service when it comes to trash, pick up for your home or apartment. I don't live in the county anymore but let me tell you through "word of mouth" simply if trash companies just don't want to pick up your trash, companies like waste-pro wont and for no reason.

Whats so hard about taking your trash home? When I go hiking I pack my trash out. Same applies for biking or boating. The problem is people don't care. The state needs to assign rangers to ticket offenders. They can make money while solving the problem.

Most of the trash is from tourist. Plus the city should empty the trash bin more often. But it's easier for politicians and media to blame the residents.

The trash is 99% from the locals that are pigs and if the trash bins are full, you should always bring a plastic bag in your boat and pick up your own garbage and take it with you when you leave get a grip man
