There was a study by the NY authorities on them and it was found they did not affect the native species or ecosystem at all. Therefore they should be welcomed and left alone.

@@MrMittens1974 I've heard someone talking about quaker parrots being relatives to extinct Carolina parakeet and how they actually can fill that spot after extinct species. So i don't really understand where is problem if those parrots didn't cause any issue in other birds population and US actually had native parrot. We have wild quaker parrots in Europe too, as well as wild amazon and ringneck parrots and they don't do any harm.

They're from a naturally cold region of South America, it's not a stretch. They also keep warm in their giant stick nests as they huddle togther.

Another reason these guys can survive in such cold temperatures is because they're not exactly from tropical locales - they're native to the mountains of Argentina, which are more temperate. But NYC and Jersey aren't the only place outside the Quakers' native range that they've made a home in. There's colonies in Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Chicago, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Louisville (KY), coastal Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and southwestern Washington state. There's even anywhere between 150,000 and 500,000 individual Quaker Parrots in Florida! Most interestingly, a colony near Green-Wood Cemetery was initially targeted for extermination until the management found that the parrots had reduced the number of pigeons in the area - and it turns out that the chemicals in pigeon feces gradually destroy brownstone structures, while Quaker parrot feces are harmless to them; thus, the birds were allowed to remain. Finally, Quaker parrots cannot handle living in non-urban areas outside their native range, thus the potential for damage to the ecosystems at large is very limited.

They occur in Argentina where it gets reasonably cold. But a big part of their success is that they have learned to use electrical transformers to create heated homes.

The main concern is that if these power transformers are so easily damaged by nesting parrots then its not the birds but rather the design of the transformers that are so faulty....re-innovate the transformers and problem solved

Very curious as to actual population of them is (any websites that provide more information on these birds)? Also what natural predators are these birds seeing in such a place as New York? I'm just curious to if they were protected by law, would their numbers be regulated in some sort of way? Now saying all this, I think they are absolutely beautiful and thank you for opening my eyes to them!
@KeyLayProductions3 жыл бұрын
No they're not protected, and technically they have no "natural" predators given they're in invasive, but as for predators its mostly red tailed haws and owls
@claveelgarron4049 Жыл бұрын
Those aren't tropical, subtropical at best, their natural area is temperate weather with 4 seasons and cold winters that could go as low as 1 or 2 degrees celsius, It surprise me still that they have adapted to snow winters that's the new part here.

The parrots are beautiful but yes their nests are known to be quite destructive. I would not consider them invasive but a potentially dangerous nuisance. Their population should be controlled as well as some sort of substitute should be provided instead of transformers.
