This movie is a now forgotten gem. It was one of my favorite ol' comedy/drama movies to watch on the VHS. It's weird but movies like this gave me a great deal of insight into adult life when I was a kid. I grew up with this movie and did not realize the depth of the Ed character. He says here that his best and worst day is the same day because with the same action he is proclaiming he will protect his mother and sister but he is also saying goodbye to his father. No matter how bad fathers are, it is difficult to exile them from your life, any relative for that matter. Also, Ed is a self admitted womanizer who dates younger women. Though he feels the next move in his life is to start a family, he is deathly afraid of becoming his father.

Kirby was also very allergic to horses and needed shots every day to get through filming - but another reason is that he wanted to be paid as much as Billy. What Mitch and Phil don't understand, probably because their parents stayed married, is that Ed was just glad it was all over finally. All his father's cheating and sneaking around was over and how it hurt the family and without their father, they could finally heal. At the same time, it meant the end of his youthful innocence. Ed would never be the same again after this. He had to grow up faster than Phil and Mitch and he hated that. Also, Mitch and Phil both mention how their best days involved their fathers in a loving way, it also shows how hard it must've been for him growing up around his two best friends who had great fathers. It's a bittersweet day for Ed. It's the same as when a loved one is dying of a terminal illness and they finally go, you're glad they're not in pain anymore because seeing them suffer was the worst, but it's also sad because they're no longer there and you have to move on never the same again. It's the same with a bad marriage or relationship. You're no longer in the relationship which is better for you but youi feel you wasted all that time and what could've been.

The Ed Furillo character is an interesting character. Ed's a good and decent man albeit a bit immature. But he's afraid to turn into his father which is why he's hesitant to have kids. But whether or not he wants to admit it, he's a womanizer like his father(hence Mitch's "twins on a trapeze" comment). He even says as much later in the movie when he says, "I don't want to cheat on Kim" and gets pissed off when Phil simply tells him not to. But the decision to not cheat should have been an easy one since he remembers how his father's infidelity hurt his family but he struggles with it but in the end, like Mitch's experience on this cattle drive, he had an epiphany and grew up and made the decision to be a man. Which is what this movie is all about. We're all flawed, the "one thing" is how we handle our flaws and still be a good person. Curly was one of the wisest people to ever be in a movie.

Bruno Kirby just couldn't miss in his day, between '87 and '91 he did Good Morning, Vietnam, When Harry met Sally and City Slickers, delivering solid comedic and dramatic performances. This scene is just beautifully done, his character is essentially explaining why he is a bit lost in life. He womanizes and either can't or won't settle down and let himself fall in love, and here he tells them that he lost his father by chasing him away, and now he can't trust anyone and hasn't had the experience of being in a stable family. These moments are what make good movies.

Then, just before we get to the border, my dad wakes me up. There was this beautiful sunrise, real orange and some of the sky was still dark blue. Dad and uncle are listening to their oldies music. Dad asks if I want some breakfast and I say yes. He pulls up to a Jack In The Box and when we get out, he tells me I can get whatever I want. Mom wasn't there to nag us about eating healthy, so like the tomboy/Daddy's girl that I was, I ask for a Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger with no mayo, large fries, large Coke. Dad doesn't even blick. Travis’s comment is so on target. My dad was the worst. Shot by him. Abusive to all. Listen to Travis. He knows.

We would love to use this clip in one of our trainings for foster parents when we discuss "resilience". I work for a non-profit agency that provides training for foster and adoptive parents. Can we show this clip to classes under the fair use policy? Who can we talk with about using the clip? thanks
