The brilliance of this scene is that Sean throws Will’s words back at him, the words Will used earlier to put the arrogant Harvard student in his place, but on a deeper level. Will asked the Harvard student if he was “going to plagiarize the whole book, or does he have an original thought of his own?” Sean is now asking Will, “Are you going to plagiarize a bunch of books, or do you have an original experience, an original life, of your own?”

I think it's all subjective. The definitions of "experiences" and "just material things" can vary dramatically from person to person. When I was younger I used to party every weekend, "going out with friends". But I wasn't really having fun, enjoying the experience. I was doing it because of peer pressure, because that's what I was supposed to be doing at that time. Now I look back and I wish I could've invested that time in "just material things" such as watching a movie I like, reading a book or playing a video game. Life is about what you make of it, not anything in particular.

What's really interesting is that earlier, in the bar scene with that private school guy Clark, Will accused him of having no original thoughts on the matter--that every thought he had could have been from the library. And now, Williams' character exposes that this is also the case with Will. Awesome scene.

Williams nails this scene, but credit has to be also given to the script. This is the moment that reveals to everyone why Sean is in his own league compared to all the other psychiatrists who had tried to work with Will before him. No one else has previously seen through Will’s hard shell like Sean does, and Will is clearly totally unprepared for that. He is left speechless, and that is the painful but necessary first step towards his mental healing. It’s a brilliantly written piece, and both Williams and Damon make it an unforgettable moment.

@fuss I feel like it was intentional. The camera slowly pans to include Will, and I think it was supposed to visually show Sean's words cracking his defenses. I haven't watched the movie in a while so I don't quite remember the chronological order, but given that it started to pan when Sean was talking about love, it might be after Will met Skylar.

"You dont know about real loss, 'cause that only occurs when you love something more than you love yourself. I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much." I think these were truly the words that broke through Will's defenses. He realizes that his past traumas have led him to live a life without meaningful connections, distanced from the world. Hands down one of the best scenes in movie history. The delivery from Robin Williams, the subtlety in Matt Damon's eyes darting back and forth with unease as he's being dissected by Sean, masterful. Love the subtle cues in this scene such as when the camera leans to fit Matt's face in the scene. Notice his eyes and body language, he is looking up at the park and swans until Robin says "through cancer", then his eyes go down focusing more on what he is saying realizing he bashed a man's wife who died of cancer

Probably not the same Robert Wagner, but this commented reminded me of a "Rip Torn" line from the movie, "Defending Your Life". When he explains to the Albert Brooks, character, that everybody on earth uses between 2 and 5% of their brains. He goes on to explain, that if you used more than 5% of your brain, you wouldn't be happy on earth. Being a fatalist, I tend towards believing that Robin Williams' time here was just up.
@Raz.C

But you do understand that everyone uses 100% of their brains, right? If there's a part of your brain that doesn't get used, it atrophies and you lose it. This 5% or 10% trope that hollywood loves to perpetuate is nothing but nonsense.

And yet this movie is a feminist propaganda which condition smart male people to give up their careers by making their life follow the wimps of the commonly infantile and spoiled people the song sings about : Stay away from me. And all that to lower the salaries by making more suitable looking the workplace for the same infantile... by trillions billionaires don't pay every year since they discovered the golden rule of economics and apply that to the family(including women and kids like we have as OK working in MacDonald, and specially the little girls with their mandatory tight pants) as a target not just to the back then working class, mainly men. But what you really know about a gay whom was like many others use to promote effeminate behaviors... same as you know about elton, fredy, michael, mick... or any other artist whom was choose over others to exploit their mannerisms, you know they were brilliant but you can't see the million artists whom were equally like so though they never make it to the big screen because of MONEY. Go hear the sound of silence again because you did not get it friend and this is the new world's subways wall..vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Sean basically undresses Will and his whole life in a few sentences. You've never travelled, you've never truly been in love...married, vulnerable, fought a war, faced death, you've never experienced real loss. At the same time he points out what's exceptional about Will and gives him some hope that connection is possible, but you have to stop bullshitting and get real with someone.

Amazing...really amazing...When Williams says "through anything....through cancer", Damon's eyes going immediately down. He realizes in a quick second that he f^&%&%* up by disrespecting his wife days earlier. Williams is easy and in rhythm, his heart just pouring out. Even with your wonderful deconstruction of this scene - you've still barely touched on the depth of the acting here. It's a marvelous example of a perfect moment on camera, with two brilliant actors showing us how to become the character and completely lose themselves in the roles. Staggering to watch these two masters play off of each other with perfection. Deeply moving - especially since the brilliant Robin Williams is gone.
